After taking a dip for the first time since 2009, sales of certified pre-owned vehicles are back on the upswing in 2021.
Through July of this year, CPO sales rose 15 percent compared with the first seven months of 2020, according to figures from the Automotive News Research & Data Center.
With vehicles in high demand and the supply of new cars and trucks relatively scarce thanks to an ongoing shortage of microchips, consumers have clearly found certified vehicles a viable alternative to purchasing new, industry observers say.
Last year, CPO sales fell 7 percent to 2,611,634 vehicles, but the onset of the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S. in the spring of 2020 was a clear contributing factor.
Sales in 2020 were tracking above 200,000 certified vehicles per month for both January and February before dropping to about 160,000 in March and then 125,000 in April. In May, they had recovered to above 200,000. Save for a dip to about 185,000 vehicles in November 2020, CPO sales remained above 200,000 per month for the rest of the year as the used-vehicle market as a whole rebounded strongly from the early months of the pandemic.
In 2021, sales of certified vehicles are continuing that upward trajectory. The leading volume brands were all off to a solid year through July.
Certified sales for Toyota Motor North America jumped 26 percent to 303,121 vehicles in the first seven months of this year. General Motors’ CPO sales increased 13 percent to 219,922 vehicles. American Honda’s CPO sales grew 18 percent to 196,168 vehicles. And certified sales for Stellantis and Ford Motor Co. each rose 6 percent — to 184,523 vehicles for Stellantis and to 133,137 vehicles for Ford.
