Where do the greatest opportunities lie for RIAs in the South? And how can you seize them? Those are the questions we’ll address today at our virtual event, ‘Citywire RIA Roadshow South.’ We’ll kick off the day with a keynote conversation with world-renowned ‘ad man’ Rory Sutherland. The author of the widely acclaimed book Alchemy: The Surprising Power of Ideas That Don’t Make Sense, Sutherland will offer a fascinating journey through the minds of your potential clients – and will offer concrete takeaways for how to better market your firm.
In addition to the live fund manager sessions, we have carefully crafted two main conference sessions to leave you with plenty of precious ‘food for thought’ to implement ‘on the job’. We´re very pleased to have the groundbreaking Bibiana Steinhaus join us as a keynote speaker. Bibiana was the first female referee in German professional football and was one of the 16 referees at the 2011 FIFA Women´s World Cup where she officiated two group stage matched before she was selected to officiate the final between Japan and the United States. Bibiana will take us on a journey through the professional sports world and will show us the difficulties that this year has brought for the sport. These are uncertain times and many of us are having to adapt to new ways of working. With face-to-face meetings off limits, first-hand and instant information is vital and so we are delighted to be able to bring you this new event, Citywire DACH Virtual 2020. Thank you for joining us today and we look forward to welcoming you virtually.
We’ll then drill down on what’s happening in your neck of the woods. A panel comprised of advisors and economic experts will offer a top-down look at the South, and determine where the greatest opportunities may now lie. What areas will grow the fastest over the next decade? Which industries are about to boom? Where are the biggest risks? We’ll address those questions and more in our panel. Plus, as always, we’re offering presentations from some of the top fund managers out there. We hope you enjoy the Citywire RIA Roadshow South. Using ‘Alchemy’ to Grow Your RIA
Rory Sutherland is a modern alchemist – but instead of turning lead into gold, he transforms problems into opportunities, words into beliefs, and wild ideas into runaway successes. An Ogilvy vice chairman who has been called one of the world’s leading experts on branding, Sutherland will take us on a surprising and quite humorous journey through the mysterious makeup of the human mind. On the other side is a new way of thinking about business and life – replete with specific takeaways for today’s investment advisor.
Opportunities and Trends in the South
For RIAs that want to grow in the South, what opportunities should they look for? What cities or industries are on the upswing? Where are the biggest untapped opportunities? Our panel of experts will help you spot the hidden treasures in your region. Tim Harford is a world-renowned behavioural economist, an award-winning Financial Times columnist, and a BBC broadcaster. With a knack for finding fascinating explanations for everyday numbers, Tim’s first two books, The Logic of Life and The Undercover Economist, have been translated into 30 languages and sold well over a million copies. His Radio 4 show More or Less looks at the truth behind dubious statistics and manipulated figures. His podcast Cautionary Tales examines the science behind and the lessons from disasters and successes. He also hosts the BBC's radio series and podcast Fifty Things That Made The Modern Economy, as well as writing the accompanying book. Whilst he’s a ‘serious’ economist with a career spanning Oxford, Shell and the World Bank, Tim’s FT columns dwell on the economics of daily life and offer tongue-in-cheek solutions to readers’ problems. His first book built on these themes and The Undercover Economist was likened to Freakonomics in its examination and explanation of the workings of everything from coffee shops to organised crime to development aid. He's since gone on to be one of the foremost writers on economics and his work has won multiple awards.

David McWilliams is an economist, author, journalist, documentary-maker and broadcaster. He is Adjunct Professor of Global Economics at the School of Business Trinity College Dublin. David is ranked 10th most influential economist in the world. He has devoted his entire professional life to the objective of making economics as widely available and easily understandable on as many platforms and to as many people as possible –and is having a laugh doing it. As a result, he co-founded the world’s only economics and stand-up comedy festival Kilkenomics – described by the FT as “simply, the best economics conference in the world”. He also founded Ireland’s leading literary and ideas shindig, the Dalkey Book Festival. The WEF at Davos debased their currency profoundly by making him a Young Global Leader a few years back. As well as writing a weekly economics column in the Irish Times, he is active on social media and was named Ireland’s “most influential Twitter user” in 2016. David uses new ways to explain our economic world for example Punk Economics and a new venture with the FT, Punk FT, deploy cartoons to make economics digestible for normal, non-nerdy, punters.

Rory Sutherland is the Vice Chairman of Ogilvy, an attractively vague job title which has allowed him to co-found a behavioral science practice within the agency. Sutherland works with a consulting practice of psychology graduates who look for ‘unseen opportunities’ in consumer behaviour – these are the often small contextual changes which can have enormous effects on the decisions people make – for instance tripling the sales rate of a call centre by adding just a few sentences to the script. Put another way, lots of agencies will talk about “bought, owned and earned” media: we also look for “invented media” and “discovered media”: seeking out those unexpected (and inexpensive) contextual tweaks that transform the way that people think and act. It is a hugely valuable activity – but, alas, not particularly lucrative. This is because clients generally do not have budgets for solving problems they did not know they had. Before founding Ogilvy Change, Rory Sutherland was a copywriter and creative director at Ogilvy for over 20 years, having joined as a graduate trainee in 1988. He has variously been President of the IPA, Chair of the Judges for the Direct Jury at Cannes, and has spoken at TED Global. He writes regular columns for the Spectator, Market Leader and Impact, and also occasional pieces for Wired. He is the author of two books: The Wiki Man and the best-selling Alchemy, The surprising Power of Ideas which don’t make Sense.

How to get the best experience of our virtual event:
Ensure you have a great connection to the internet; either with Wi-Fi or ideally connect your machine directly to the router. The recommended internet speed for HD quality is 3 Mpbs up and down, this can be checked on your machine by going to speedtest and pressing Go. A headset with a microphone would also be ideal to achieve the best audio experience for the sessions. Please also ensure that all non-essential programs are closed prior to joining the call. This will help reduce the processor and memory usage by the machine and also avoid any notifications from popping up. One final tip would be to ask if members of the household could not be on Netflix, gaming and other internet hungry activities as this will affect the connection as well.
Each session will be streamed to this webpage so you won’t need to connect to Zoom to be part of the action. To ask questions throughout you can join the Zoom call or you can email in. Buttons for both of these will appear under the video streams.
If your company has blocked the use of Zoom, below are alternative ways of connecting:
If the whole page isn’t working: What browser are you using? You have to use FireFox/Chrome to access the page. Make sure you have pressed play on the video itself. If you're on a work machine and it is not working, can you try a personal machine? If you are using an adblocker and the video does not work, please disable the adblocker and refresh the page.

Calamos Evolving World Growth Fund
Calamos Evolving World Growth Fund offers an active, risk-managed strategy to access growth opportunities in emerging markets. The fund invests in emerging market-domiciled companies with significant revenue exposures attributable to emerging markets. The fund also leverages our expertise within convertibles, broadening the opportunity set for investors. The Calamos Global Team approach blends top-down cyclical insights, with exposures to long-term secular themes, while leveraging proprietary quantitative tools to identify inflections and focus our fundamental research efforts on the most attractive bottom-up ideas. This process results in an active-approach to emerging markets, which has historically been able to outperform in strong markets, but more importantly, has proven to dampen the volatility for our clients during broad market sell-offs, preserving capital to be redeployed to participate in the ensuing recovery.

Calamos Approach to Emerging Markets
A Case for Investing in International Small Companies
International small companies are often overlooked in portfolio construction, though the asset class represents a significant portion of the equity opportunity set outside the US. Historically, an allocation to ISC has improved the risk-return profile of portfolios. Additionally, as a less-efficient asset class than its large cap counterpart, there is a strong case to be made for active management within the space. The universe is rich with businesses that exhibit attractive fundamental characteristics. Since 1989, Harding Loevner’s investment team has conducted fundamental research through a consistent bottom-up approach to identify high quality, durable growth companies across the globe.
Jafar Rizvi, CFA
Jafar Rizvi, CFA is a co-lead portfolio manager of the Global Small Companies Equity and International Small Companies Equity strategies and an analyst. Jafar is a Partner of the firm and has over 25 years of experience. Before joining Harding Loevner in 2008, he worked as an analyst at Cohen, Klingenstein & Marks, Franklin Templeton, Sands Brothers & Co., and Deutsche Bank. Jafar is a graduate of Aligarh University with a BA in Economics, J Nehru University with an MA in Economics, Baruch College with an MBA in Computer Information Systems, and Columbia University with an MPA in International Economic Policy and Management.
Co-lead Portfolio Manager, International Small Companies
Discuss the potential benefits an allocation to international small companies presents equity investors, as well as Harding Loevner’s approach to investing in the asset class.
Former global investment managers for the Rockefeller family established Harding Loevner in 1989. Its staff of 46 investment professionals has an average 18 years investment experience, and 9 years with the firm. Assets under management as of December 31, 2020 were $84 billion across all strategies: Global Equity, Global Small Companies, International Equity, International Small Companies, Emerging Markets, Frontier Emerging Markets, and Chinese Equity`. Harding Loevner undertakes in-depth fundamental research to identify growing companies and seeks to own the businesses when their share prices are attractive. The firm’s clients are both tax-exempt and taxable, and include major foundations, endowments, pension plans, private family offices, and individuals.

Finding Relative Value in Volatile Fixed Income Markets
A pandemic induced global economic shock and subsequent policy reactions by government has forever altered the landscape of fixed income investing. Today, investors face volatile rates, increasing defaults, and an unknown economic future—just in time for the bulk of Baby Boomers to retire. To most investors, this may sound like a frightening mix, but for investors with a flexible, relative value focus, opportunity awaits. We discuss how our unique prospective unlocks hidden value in today’s fixed income landscape.
