The fixture emits a glare-free, soft and comfortable illumination. The opal acrylic shade leaves a diffused comfortable light atmosphere due to the translucent shade, the downward reflection from the inner shade and the reflection from the trumpet stem.In 2020, Louis Poulsen introduced a new version of the Panthella Floor in its original design with minor modifications to make it a functional and modern lamp meeting today’s standard for great lighting comfort. The Panthella Floor comes with a new diffuser shade to avoid any shadows visible on the opal shade. The stand has been adjusted to keep the trumpet and metal gatherings straight and white over time. In addition, the updated edition always ensures a high level of comfort with soft, diffused light.
“The Danish brand's offering of the 1971 design includes a portable lamp, available in a series of delicious shades that nod to the chromatic enthusiasm of the 1970s”
Verner Panton's Panthella lamp has been declined in several interpretations by lighting design brand Louis Poulsen. The Danish brand's offering of the 1971 design includes a portable lamp, available in a series of delicious shades that nod to the chromatic enthusiasm of the 1970s. The lamp emits a suffused non-glaring light, while its domed metal shade provides practical downward illumination. Panton’s figurative and playful design radiates his larger than life personality. Without compromising on quality or functionality, the world-renowned Dane continued to develop new materials for the colourful and captivating spaces that he created out of his enticing designs.

To make finely cut crystal objects suitable for such an ‘everyday landscape’, the collection emphasises simplicity and functionality. Horizontal lines decorate the objects that contain liquids, and vertical lines adorn ‘elevated’ objects like stemmed glasses and lighting stands. The pieces are heavy enough that they do not feel intimidatingly delicate, but light enough that they can be easily carried and used for long stretches of time. The precision-cut lines give each object a pleasant tactility. The wine glasses have a shorter, bulkier stem than usual to make them feel less formal, while the table and hanging lamps use a surprising combination of crystal and paper to gently diffuse light.
The collection emphasises simplicity and functionality.
Saint-Louis and Pierre Charpin are on a mission to make crystal casual. That might seem like a strange cause for the royal glassworks of France (a title that originated with King Louis XV) and a designer whose work is in the collection of the Centre Pompidou and Musée des Arts Décoratifs. But good design always responds to the needs of its users, and as Saint-Louis’ artistic director Anne Lhomme puts it, ‘we’re living in a time where we want things to be fuss-free, when we want the way we use objects to be as simple as possible’. Thus, Saint-Louis and Charpin have created ‘Cadence’, a 29-piece collection of clear crystal that spans everything from vases and tumblers to fruit bowls and lamps. The objects are characterised by a design of horizontal and vertical cuts that, as Charpin puts it, ‘creates a connection, a line, and allows these objects to exist together or on their own, and to become part of an everyday landscape’.

Individually sculpted brass pieces take centre stage: the chess King and queen are rotund characters with goofy smiles and crowns shaped like water splashes, the rooks look like cauldrons with legs, the pawns are shaped like mushrooms, while the tIc-tac-toe pieces are frogs with exaggerated backsides. The black and white stone-in aid chessboard is exquisite, but the true star is the mother-of-pear tIc-tac-toe board, whose grid Is formed or multicoloured shell accents resembling interwined snakes.

Many designers have elevated game sets to showcases of ingenuity and craftsmanship. But few have done so with as much whimsy and flair as brothers Nikolai and Simon Hass, whose second collection for New York homeware label L’Objet includes a chess set. tic-tac-toe set and one-minute timer.

This graphic identity also runs throughout the fine necklaces, bracelets and earrings, which intersperse a simple bar pendant, with or without a sprinkle of diamonds, into elegant golden links. The bar, adorned only with the Gucci logo, makes a simple foil for the intricate knitting of the chain. In pendant earrings, the chain takes on a new form, itself becoming a decorative element which grazes the shoulder in a sensual riff off classic style. Functionality is carefully considered throughout - the new ‘Lariat’ necklace eschews the traditional clasp in favour of an innovative sliding circle design. On bracelets, a clasp which closes onto the chain means pieces are adjustable to suit the preferred length of the wearer, for jewellery which infuses joyous Gucci design with a very grown-up sensibility.

Geometrical design codes bring a modernity to romantic motifs in Gucci’s new ‘Link to Love’ collection, now also widely available at Beaverbrooks. The octagonal forms of the rings and bracelets are swathed in symbolism, their eight sides both nodding to associations of infinity and ensuring a seamless slotting together in a contemporary rethink of the classic stack. The pieces themselves, in 18kt white, yellow or pink gold, play on a variety of finishes, from the unadorned sheen of minimalist metal to delicate embellishments. Bracelets cut clean whorls of gold, while rings are studded with precious gemstones in bold hues, sprinkled with a pavé of diamonds or striped with green tourmalines or dark red rubellites. Smooth loops give way to sharply defined ridges on some pieces.

Playful design codes abound in the latest collaboration between Miu Miu and artists Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg, who have drawn on their 2015 sculpture series, A Thief Caught in the Act, for a new collection of whimsical adornments. The duo have reimagined the mischievous motifs from their previous work to create a jewellery collection titled ‘A Remedy’, which casts resin pills and animals in sweet sorbet shades; in the artists’ hands, the flamboyantly drawn silhouettes of earrings and necklaces are translated into childlike forms. The resulting offbeat pieces offer a new look to traditional fine jewellery, imbuing animals and flowers with an impish impression when juxtaposed against a rainbow of boldly coloured pills. Polished, assembled and decorated by hand, their gleaming outlines make for a chic bridge between the art and jewellery worlds.

By reducing the design to its essential form, she shifts our focus to simple silhouettes and easy wearability. ‘Simplifying a design idea to its most potent parts is an important element of my process. There is a point where the design has been stripped of any fuss but still retains the detail giving it vibrance and personality.’ Luttrell says: ‘The way my designs fit on the body has always been at the core of my work; a piece that fits or hangs well needs to marry with the natural contours of the human form.’ These new pieces build on a past experimentation with texture which adds a sensual edge to the classical forms of the pieces. ‘Texture creates another language when designing: the way light reflects shine or shimmers can completely change the feeling of a piece. I love exploring these different finishes – from a bold, hammered piece to the gentle softness of the Florentine finish.’ ‘I discovered this ancient art on my design travels and fell in love with the light it creates. It takes great skill to hand-engrave the multiple intersecting parallel lines that give the gold its beautiful shimmer. For me, it’s a perfect partnership of traditional art and contemporary design.’
A piece that fits or hangs well needs to marry with the natural contours of the human form.’
Jewellery design is imbued with a sculptural sensibility in the hands of Liv Luttrell, who traces the natural contours of the human form in whorls of yellow gold and loops of silver. ‘I have always enjoyed the sensuality of shaping metal: there is a real feeling of adventure faced with a flat piece of metal that I sculpt with sometimes subtle, sometimes bold moves to create drama and volume,’ she says. Understated elements in her jewellery make for enticing accents: a juxtaposition of finishes on the Vol ring creates a rich texture and Twist hoops curl behind the earlobe; while a bespoke clip on the Twist earrings brings functionality to the forefront. Adds Luttrell, ‘the design process is a very personal one: the sensuality of the aesthetic must translate into the same feeling for the wearer.’

We've been deep-diving into boutiques around the world to find the very best calcium carbonate in minute crystalline form. It seems jewellers have been busy rethinking pearls, with contemporary (and often affordable) results Over the last decade, a host of contemporary jewellers, both new and established, have been drawn to the possibilities of a pearl, removing it from its traditional home in high jewellery and reinventing it for a new generation. Now, driven by undercurrents of sustainability and a mood for rebellion, these more affordable and playful pieces feel more timely than ever. Drilled or recycled, with every imperfection celebrated, today’s pearl jewellery captures the irreverent mood of a post-pandemic world. Comme des Garçons and Mikimoto have unveiled their second collection of subversive and elegant pearl jewellery. Collection Two is composed of seven styles from Rei Kawakubo, who has toughened up white Akoya Mikimoto pearls with sterling silver fangs, studs and safety pins. It is a reworking of last year's pieces which married tradition, creativity and crafstmanship to breathe new life into a classic piece. mikimoto.co.uk comme-des-garcons.com

‘We think through the shape in every detail, nothing is left to chance,’ Le Louër says. ‘At Le Gramme, we are not into free artistic gesture,’ he adds, however effortless the designs may appear. The duo’s close scrutiny is reflected in the choice of materials; some pieces feature seemingly random links of gold or silver in a contemporary play on mixed metals. The rings take this further, mixing yellow, red and white gold in a move that is a first for Le Gramme. In this modern reinterpretation of the classic trois ors jewellery design, the century-old motif is brought bang up-to-date in a gracefully Gallic way. ‘We don’t see Segment as a new direction, but more like a continuation of what we have already done,’ says Le Louër. ‘Like all of our other pieces, it looks very easy but is, in fact, very complex. We believe that details make all the difference – Segment is an elementary shape that we thought of and made our own.’ By shifting the focus from clean design to high-quality precious metals and unusual shapes, the heavy jewelllery becomes sensual, crying out to be worn and touched. Adds Le Louër: ‘As the name of our brand is Le Gramme, you need to feel the weight of the jewellery you are wearing.’
‘We think through the shape in every detail, nothing is left to chance,’
Le Gramme, created in 2013 by Le Louër and Adrien Messié, encapsulates simplicity. Materials take centre stage, with 18ct gold or sterling silver precisely proportioned for clean and uncluttered forms. The smooth surfaces of the precious metals become ripe for interpretation, with a choice of polished, matte or brushed finishes available to discerning wearers. Patterns, when used, are subtle – the ridges of a guilloche wedding ring are gentle, the grooves in a lightweight silver cable bracelet unobtrusive. Made in France, each piece is succinctly named after its weight in grammes. Now, a new collection, Segment, builds on these foundations with bracelets, rings and necklaces that nod to last year’s chain collection, Entrelacs. While those pieces upped the proportions of the classic chain, thickly knitting together circular gold and silver links for a chunky urbanity, this year Le Louër has rethought the concept entirely. The familiar circles appear to have been pinched, their forms tweaked so they become cylinders. Previously hollow, the links are now filled with precious metal, adding a reassuring weight. They move freely with the wearer, an articulated design making for a gleaming flexible spine.

Celine’s first journey into fragrance was in 2019 with the launch of its perfume collection, a range of scents made for day and evening wear that drew inspiration from Slimane’s own diaries. Like the perfumes before it, Celine’s eight new luxury candles will be both an expression of Slimane’s personal history and an ode to the grand traditions of French perfumery, a legacy that the brand defines as couturier parfumeur. The eight candles in the range will feature familiar scents from Celine’s fragrance collection, such as Nightclubbing, which smells of nicotine and ‘the nape of a neck fragrant with vanilla’, as well as new fragrances, like Palimpsest, a blend of gallica rose, pear, ivy and moss, and Grands Lys, an intriguing combination of pimento, ylang-ylang, and heliotrope. In keeping with the exacting codes of couturier parfumeur, the candles have been created by the maison’s own wax maker, whose dual training in perfumery (something of an anomaly in the wax-making trade) has given him unparallelled understanding of how fragrance and wax work together to pervade a room. Each wax is formulated according to its fragrance, with six to seven waxes and oils used for each perfume concentrate, as well as a different wick dimension for each scent to optimise diffusion. The candles are housed in faceted black glass containers designed by Slimane, who took inspiration from an 18th-century multi-paned silver goblet, adding sleek lines and a monochrome colour palette for a distinctly modern look.

Revolution is a concept Hedi Slimane is familiar with, whether its the ‘skinny silhouette’ he created at Dior Homme, his youth culture-centric designs for Saint Laurent, or his dropping of the accent aigu from Celine and the expanding of the label into menswear, couture and fragrance collections. Now, in November 2021, Celine’s creative director once again into new territories with the launch of the brand’s first candle collection.

Pyrpylis has been enlisted to further develop the Hermès Beauty line which, after launching its first range of lipsticks in 2020, has grown to include blush, nail polish and foundation. His appointment earlier this year came on the eve of the brand’s Plein Air launch, a capsule collection that includes two highlighters, a powder brush, mattifying blotting papers, and a cream complexion balm that, in this beauty editor’s opinion, has the ability to make even blemished skin look like it has been airbrushed to perfection.
“Beauty is here to reveal, or to sublimate but definitely not to transform.”
If Hermès Beauty is all about elegance, as its new creative director Gregoris Pyrpylis says, then the iconic brand couldn’t have found a better representative for its newest metier. The Athens-born make-up artist has the good looks and affable charm of a Golden Age leading man, coupled with an exceptional technical skill that has made him a celebrated name within the industry.

For his collaboration with Acqua Di Parma, Ross looked to the architecture and attitudes of London and Milan for inspiration. Informed by the structures of Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, he imagined the sun – an ongoing source of inspiration for Acqua di Parma – blazing across a European cityscape. The play of light informed his vision. The result is a bottle in a range of three bold colours. Hyper-flat, super-pigmented, light-absorbing yellow reimagines Acqua Di Parma’s signature colour. Dubbed ‘Sun_Rise_Yellow’ by SR_A, it is juxtaposed with primary shades of ‘Grass_Blade_Green’ and ‘Ultra_Orange’, an industrial nod to Ross’ own practice and spectrum. Together the colours comprise a palette that pays homage to British and Italian modernism. The bottle – its labelling pared right back – remains true to its original art deco lines, while the golden liquid inside is the same citrus blend as at its first unveiling. Hold the bottle up, watch the light refract, and recall moments in the sunlight. Crafted in Italy, Acqua di Parma Colonia Limited Edition designed by Samuel Ross will be released globally on 15 March 2023; 300 numbered, special-edition collectors bottles, spanning the three colours, were released on 1 March.
“A project of both conservation and renovation, Colonia Limited Edition by Samuel Ross reshuffles respective design codes to create a new blueprint while respecting brand origins and forms.”
Samuel Ross reimagines the Acqua Di Parma Colonia perfume bottle, taking cues from modernism and sunlight Created in collaboration with British designer Samuel Ross, Colonia Limited Edition is a new reimagining of Acqua di Parma’s signature fragrance bottle. As the first iteration of a three-year partnership between Acqua di Parma and Samuel Ross’ studio SR_A, this version of the brand’s classic Colonia fragrance – first unveiled at Design Miami 2022 – is an artistic play on duality. The company’s output spans from stationery to textiles and luxury candles. Its signature range of elegant white ceramics is created according to the methods of 18th-century Parisian manufacturers and decorated with cheeky designs or shaped like Peanuts comic book characters, cowboy boots, or a pair of lips. Meanwhile, its printing press in the Parisian suburbs is one of the last in the world to use lead typesetting, and has published books by artist and singer Lou Doillon and the artist Balthus. Now Astier de Villatte’s latest fragrance series translates that same sensibility into scent. Perfume historian, anthropologist and researcher Annick Le Guérer provided perfumer Dominique Ropion with detailed documents describing the ingredients and their proportions for kyphi and the Roman royal perfume; she also supplied samples of George Sand’s perfume from the bottom of a travel phial, entrusted by one of her descendants, Christiane Sand. Ropion then worked with Astier de Villatte to recreate the three perfumes as faithfully as possible to the formulas of the time, while also following the regulations of today’s perfumery. Traditionally, Artaban was created in Ancient Rome using 24 herbs imported at great expense from across the empire. To reimagine it, Ropion blended bitter and sweet marjoram, a spicy and fruity cardamom, resinous nard, and herbaceous calamus. For Le Dieu Bleu, Ropion made a strangely intoxicating fragrance from honeyed broom, myrrh, green and fresh lentisk, and fruity opoponax. Finally, Les Nuits is an assertive, cologne-like fragrance made from Turkish rose, sensual patchouli, and powdery iris. Each perfume comes with a book that has been printed at the Astier de Villatte press and tells the story behind the fragrance astierdevillatte.com
“Les Nuits is an assertive, cologne-like fragrance made from Turkish rose, sensual patchouli, and powdery iris.”
French company Astier de Villatte’s new fragrances meticulously revive three historical scents. Le Dieu Bleu is a version of the incense known as kyphi, which was used in Ancient Egyptian rituals and healing; Artaban reinterprets the Ancient Roman ‘royal perfume’; and Les Nuits draws on the perfume worn by French Romantic-era novelist George Sand. Astier de Villatte’s founders, Ivan Pericoli and Benoît Astier de Villatte, established the brand in 1993 as a forum for rehabilitating objects forgotten by history and infusing them with a modern playfulness.

First came the Wallpaper* Design Award-nominated Hæckels Skin, which saw their the company’s signature skincare formulations, made from seaweed harvested on Margate’s beaches, repackaged in compostable containers. Then Hæckels Fragrance, with a revamp of its beloved perfumes and candles. The latest innovation, Hæckels Lab, comprises three completely new skincare formulations – Hydrating Toner; Cleansing Milk; and EGF Serum – all made in-house using ingredients primarily grown with the brand’s own bioreactors.

For Pica, emotions felt like a natural theme for this first collection. 'After meeting Ben,’ she says, ‘it became clear that [Byredo] is about a personal story, working to evoke an emotion or a memory within a person. He was talking about this transparent medium he does with [perfume] and I thought ’this is perfect,’ because [to me] colour has always been about evoking emotions as well. Colours are super important in make-up to help you express yourself and also to change your mood.’ And therein lies, for both Byredo and Pica, the power of beauty. It’s about ‘giving people a medium to have fun, to express themselves, and to enhance what is unique about them. That is what beauty ultimately means.’
‘So my idea was to be inclusive, to the point of saying that this can be anything to anybody.’
The melding of luxury and creativity has produced First Emotions, Pica’s first collection with the brand, and one heavy on reds – recognised with the nod for Best Use of Colour in the Wallpaper* Design Awards 2023. The collection comprises five products: a Kajal eye pencil and mascara in burgundy, a five-colour eyeshadow palette with gold, auburns and metallic pinks, and two lipsticks. ‘The primal power of emotions is reflected in the colours,’ says Pica. ‘There is light and excitement in the gold and something darker in the burgundy. There are the different tonalities of love; the different facets – erotic, sincere, unconditional, even unrequited.’
