The company is partnering with Feeding America to serve neighbors and communities in need.
In 2021, millions of Americans from small towns to metropolitan city centers turned to a local food bank or community program to help put meals on their tables. To help address food insecurity throughout the communities it calls home, Dollar General joined forces with Feeding America to provide continued access to food and support its nationwide network of more than 200 food banks and the individuals who rely on them.
Through this partnership, Dollar General is supplying in-kind food donations from stores and distribution centers across the country. The company has also provided a total of $2 million since 2021 to further aid in Feeding America’s efforts.
“It’s our vision that every distribution center and every store in Dollar General’s network will be a part of the Feeding America program. This will allow us to help Feeding America double their footprint and make a true impact on reducing food insecurity in our country,” says Dollar General’s chief operating officer Jeff Owen.
The impact of this collaboration is apparent in Atlanta, which served as a pilot market for the Dollar General and Feeding America partnership. Each week, Dollar General stores send shipments of both perishable and nonperishable items to the Atlanta Community Food Bank, which supports people facing food insecurity in urban, suburban, and rural areas throughout the greater Atlanta region.
The success and learnings from the Atlanta pilot donation program allowed Dollar General to expand to other communities, ultimately providing the equivalent of more than 3.7 million meals to Feeding America affiliates in fiscal 2021. When fully operational, Dollar General plans to provide up to 20 million meals each year through in-kind product donations.
“Serving the community and knowing we’ve helped a family, knowing we’ve done that each day, is one of the most rewarding experiences,” says Dollar General district manager Bill McClellan, who leads operations for 22 stores in the northeast Atlanta area and was instrumental in starting the partnership’s pilot donation program.
