In addition, visit the annual report of our parent company, Ahold Delhaize, to see how we’re contributing to a broader good through environmental, social and governance (ESG) measures. We work to have a meaningful impact on the world around us, led by our noble purpose and achieved through focusing on 9 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
For almost 100 years, The GIANT Company has been entrusted to help families connect over food. Our founder, David Javitch, began this journey with a small butcher shop in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and today I am one of the 35,000 team members who continue the work he and his family started.
Since the opening of our first store in Carlisle, Pa., in 1923, The GIANT Company has always been committed to serving our local communities and living our purpose of connecting families for a better future. We put our purpose into action every day by making a difference in the lives of our team members, our customers, and our communities. One thing I’ve noticed in my decades of working in grocery is that even though the how, when, and where customers shop continues to evolve, the idea of gathering with family around the table to enjoy a meal remains a constant. As a father of six and a grandfather of three, I’m proud of the progress we’ve made in staying true to our purpose. Our stores play a cornerstone in our local neighborhoods and our team members work every day to help connect families, create healthier communities, and grow local neighborhoods. From the progress we’ve made to eliminate hunger, change children’s lives, and heal our planet to our work in fostering a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all, we’re excited to share our second community impact report. In the following pages you can see how our purpose has come to life over the last year, and how we are taking care of each other, our customers and our communities. Most importantly, you can see the impact we can have when we work together to make a difference. We’ve certainly come a long way over the last century, and as we prepare to mark our 100th anniversary later this year, I know the impact of our team, partners, and customers will only grow in the years and decades to come. On behalf of The GIANT Company family, thank you for sharing our purpose. Together, we are connecting families for a better future. With gratitude, JOHN RUANE INTERIM PRESIDENT | The GIANT Company | Carlisle, PA

WHO WE ARE
OUR BRANDS
Founded in 1923 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, The GIANT Company creates a positive, convenient shopping experience that fits into the lives of our busy customers – no matter where or how they need us. We’re an omni-channel retailer, proudly serving Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and New Jersey. Over 35,000 team members put our promises into action every day, all with the simple goal of making life a little simpler and a little better, so you can get back to what matters most.
GIANT Heirloom Market, our groundbreaking urban format store, established in 2019, was inspired by our real neighbors in Philadelphia. Our goal was to fit their unique grocery needs and connect them with real food through in-store shopping, along with easy pickup and delivery. GIANT Heirloom Market is a simple, modern grocery store offering dry goods, top quality fresh foods, and local favorites that represent the tastes of Philly.
At GIANT & MARTIN’S, we’re dedicated to providing everyone with access to quality food. Our long-standing heritage and forward-thinking innovation come together in GIANT & MARTIN’S Direct, our ecommerce-based grocery pickup and delivery service. In a busy, growing market, direct-from-the-store quality and next-level service are what set us apart from the rest.
OUR PURPOSE
If there’s one thing that can change the world, it’s strong, healthy families. Today’s families are more diverse than ever before, but they remain the bedrock of society. Our responsibility is to raise families up every day, in every way we can. If families are strong, communities are strong. If communities are strong, our world is strong. And that adds up to a better future for everyone.
We are a purpose-led team.
OUR VALUES
We care about our customers, our team members, and our community.

We drive change, and are open-minded, bold and innovative.
Together, we take ownership, collaborate, and win.
We are humble, down-to-earth, and we don’t take ourselves too seriously.

Our values guide us each and every day. They embody who we are, but they also encourage our team members to find community in our shared values.
We laugh together. We care about those around us. We do what is right. We drive change. We make each other better. And we can do the hard – and easy – things because we know we have each other. Our values keep us grounded, but they also keep us connected and accountable and inspire us to be our best every day.

I’m so thankful for the opportunities to grow my career with The GIANT Company. Since joining the team seven years ago, I have grown through various marketing and e-commerce roles. In each role, I've learned valuable lessons and gained knowledge that I've taken with me in my career progression. I also took advantage of GIANT’s tuition reimbursement program when I pursued my MBA. My continued education gave me a stronger foundation of business principles to drive new programs and initiatives, and today, I'm grateful for my new opportunity to lead our loyalty and channel marketing team to further our commercial planning efforts.
No matter your cultural background, food brings people together, and language should never be a barrier to food. As Spanish-speaker and Latina woman, I am proud to put my language on my name badge. Most people do not realize I speak Spanish, but when people see my name badge, it is a great conversation starter, and many want to learn more. It is also creating community. When I meet Spanish speaking customers and can lend a hand, there is a sense of ‘somebody understands me and they care,’ and that’s all people really want – to be understood and valued for who they are.
Each year, team members are given the opportunity to contribute to the Take Care Fund through weekly payroll deductions. More than 1,400 team members contributed to the fund this year which supported 147 team members and their families by providing financial assistance as they were faced with extraordinary personal tragedy or sudden extreme hardship. Our teams are here to make a difference and lift each other up, no matter the challenge or need.
Together, we can make our stores, facilities, and offices trusting places where you can be you and where we can continue to bring our purpose of connecting families for a better future to life.
We supported Global Diversity Awareness Month through our GIANT Inclusion Week and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Summit. Team members and guests took part in a day dedicated to building a culture of inclusion with candid conversation, learning opportunities, BRG engagement, team building and inspired action.

Making a difference and volunteering is so important to me because we truly have the ability to uplift the communities we serve. We believe in building partnerships and establishing bonds with people and organizations who are making a difference. We can do more when we work together, and if we take care of our community, the community will take care of us. We are all in this together.
Take Care Fund Team, I want to express a huge thank you for your consideration for our team members. One team member who benefitted from the Take Care Fund was so appreciative of the support, care, and understanding, and was overjoyed when we presented him with his financial support. He could not find enough words to express his gratitude. It is so nice that our organization is providing this relief to team members and supporting them during their time of need. Business Resource Groups in Action –
I recently saw a quote that said, 'the hardest challenge is being yourself in a world where everyone is trying to make you be somebody else.’ I love that The GIANT Company is determined to break those barriers and truly promote diversity and inclusion. I've seen it firsthand working with the PRIDE+ Business Resource Group, as well as through operations in our stores. The GIANT Company truly empowers me to authentically be myself.
I have been with The GIANT Company for more than 13 years, and I have never seen our team values shine so brightly! The GIANT Company has allowed me to make my family a priority while giving me the platform to grow my career. This year I joined a BRG, and it has given me not only an extension of family, but it has also allowed me to feel a stronger feeling of acceptance in the workplace, and the opportunity to give back and empower others within our community. We continue to succeed because of each other. I am proud to be a part of this organization, and I can't wait to see what the next year has in store!

Connecting families to a better future embodies a holistic approach to wellness – it is food, nutrition, economics, healthcare, and so much more. We recognize that savings is critical, and we continue to find new ways to promote savings and special offers to connect our customers, team members, and their families to healthy, affordable foods. In July, we unveiled 2x CHOICE Rewards® on all produce purchases for a limited time.
Helping Our Customers Save on Produce –
Since joining The GIANT Company in 2018, I've described the experience as my ‘dream job’. The focus GIANT puts on customer care and community health has been clear since day one. We go above and beyond to be a community resource for vaccines, treatments, health related questions, and so much more. Whether you’re a new customer or a returning friend, our customer service and care continue to grow our relationships through trust, which is what community pharmacy is all about. I can't wait to see what's next for our pharmacy team in 2023!

KEEPING IT LOCAL
A newer supplier partnership, Painterland Sisters, offers our customers local, organic Skyr yogurt that is rich in probiotics, high in protein, and low in sugar. The Painterland Sisters partner exclusively with certified organic farms that respect people, animals, and the planet to promote a smaller carbon footprint, healthier and more fertile soil, and safer farms for animals and farmers.
By keeping it local and supporting more than 130 local supplier partners, we’re doing our part in healing the planet. We’re reducing the amount of food miles used to transport food from farm to table, which in turn reduces travel-related emissions and eliminates packaging needed for long-distance transport. Not only are we helping the planet, but we’re also helping our local communities and farmers by supporting their business and making healthier options available for today’s table.
Painterland Sisters™ –
As a fourth-generation organic dairy and crop family farm, creating local partnerships is important to us. We want to take care of the community that has helped us become who we are, and we strive to do business with organizations who prioritize local values. The GIANT Company has been a great partner, showcasing our craft within our home state of Pennsylvania and beyond. Our relationship is connecting consumers to local farmers and food processors, and by keeping it local, it’s also growing the resiliency of our food system.
Often two breweries will collaborate to provide a co-branded beer, but we wanted to take it a step further and come up with something that highlights our support of local. This isn’t just about providing something our competitors don’t have, it’s about reflecting the communities we are in and supporting the efforts that mean the most in those areas.
Our partnership with Sterman Masser, Inc. offers our customers local, safe, and quality potatoes. Masser’s is committed to growing and providing nutritious, convenient, and delicious food in a sustainable, responsible way while strengthening and supporting its communities. This purpose-driven approach has allowed Sterman Masser, Inc. to thrive as an independent, family-owned, agriculturally based company for multiple generations. It’s no surprise we partnered with them – our values and vision align.

Our teams are brewing up something special and teaming up with local breweries across the region to change lives. Together, we’re raising funds for local charities while also providing exclusive, limited time flavors for our customers. Each collaboration benefits a different nonprofit with $1 being donated for every four-pack sold. The series has generated more than $31,000 in charitable contributions.
BEER COLLABORATION STORY /
Bell & Evans doesn’t compromise on feeding their families and doesn’t think you should have to either. They promise antibiotic-free raised chickens, with a 100% air-chilled sealing method that eliminates the need for chilled chlorinated water that most producers use, which ends up in your chicken. From the millions of gallons of water that they conserve each year to their 100% recyclable product packaging, organic practices and more, Bell & Evans is committed to limiting its environmental footprint because it’s the right thing to do.

October 12 is National Farmer’s Day. We partnered with the PA Friends of Agriculture Foundation to unveil the new PA Farms to Families Immersion Lab, an interactive "classroom on wheels.” In its first two months of hitting the road, the Immersion Lab traveled nearly 250 miles, reaching more than 1,000 visitors, and it’s just getting started!
