How important is the development of Mobility analytics to your organisation in the next 12 months?
Regarding Mobility analytics, there was an indication that industry professionals in the different regions didn’t value programme data in the same way.

We also surveyed Summit participants to identify the primary challenges they face with their Mobility programmes. Although we gave them nine areas to choose from, in each region the top five responses were the same, although the order varied.
What are the top challenges your Talent Mobility programme faces in the next 12-24 months?

How well does your programme calculate ROI for moves and share the data with key stakeholders?
Participants admitted that measuring Mobility ROI is a work in progress.
It’s been interesting to watch the evolution of best practices for measuring return and benefits from Mobility activity. Mobility teams are becoming more adept at distinguishing the various purposes for relocations – and that’s opening the door to improved return analyses.
Measuring Return on Investment (ROI)
Cross-border transfers are universally popular from a corporate perspective – participants noted the potential cost-savings from these international transfers.
Cross-border Transfers
What We Learned
In ROI-related breakout sessions at the Summits, Mobility professionals reported more success, for example, in quantifying the returns/benefits from relocations for specific business purposes (e.g., opening a sales office). In contrast, benefits stemming from relocations for things like skill development or corporate exposure are not as easy to quantify; companies are defining those in more qualitative ways.
What We Learned
It’s relatively difficult to permanently transfer employees to the APAC region, due in part to cultural unfamiliarity and financial differentials. But we also heard it’s possibly even more important to permanently place employees within APAC countries, since businesses there tend to work with companies that have a personal stake in the region.

During the work sessions at the Summits, it was remarkable to see the consistency across Mobility programme practices and priorities around the globe. We also noted subtle regional differences that should guide the next generation of international Mobility programmes.

Based on that survey, it’s not surprising that participants at the Americas Summit focused on this topic. The consensus at that Denver meeting was that Mobility professionals need to go deeper than basic data. Macro-level numbers and averages can mask significant programmematic problems. Participants also noted that predictive analytics are as important as performance analytics.

How confident are you that your international business travellers are in compliance with tax and immigration rules of the countries they’re visiting?
Another common theme across the regions was that companies are confronted with increasing areas and levels of complication—for example, related to immigration, visa requirements and transferee/assignee taxation.

To create the space and time to fill that consultative role, many Mobility offices are outsourcing functions that ensure successful relocation experiences. They’re working directly with vendors for specific services or outsourcing Mobility operational matters to relocation management companies.
That’s just a flavour of some of the key findings from the 2017 insideMOBILITY Summit meetings. Download your copy of each region’s full report:
We saw at the Summits that Mobility programmes are extending beyond the ’moving, caring and feeding’ of transferees. Transferee experience and operational excellence remain a priority, of course. But many Mobility professionals reported that thanks to proactive internal outreach within their organisations, Mobility is becoming a valued resource for business units and departments as they plan expansions and new initiatives.
