Application 2
Optimizing the Workplace for Innovation
For creativity and innovation to flourish, space design should protect people’s ability to focus and encourage restorative behaviors in the workplace. Given the right spaces to support the ideal creative rhythms within an organization, people can be free to do what they need to innovate.
Two very different behaviors optimize creative thinking for innovation processes: high-focus work and restorative activities. We need to experience these alone and with others. Organizations that value and design workplaces supporting all of these activities can improve their innovation efforts. Explore the growing evidence that supports this and how, coupled with our workplace expertise, space design can cultivate the creativity necessary to spark innovation.

The key to the design of Cotone Dining is the strong contrast between the frame’s rigorous, minimal line, which is made of aluminum and the soft, welcoming look of the seat. This frame, seemingly simple due to its minimal appearance, actually hides an industrially sophisticated internal structure. In contrast, the soft padding of its cushions creates a welcoming nest and an open invitation to relax.

Home Office
Individual Workspace
In the built environment, workspace features that communicate where specific activities take place are essential. We call this legibility—and certain characteristics of the floorplate contribute to it. Defining the spaces where focus work occurs helps people manage visual and auditory distractions, interference, and interruptions so they can perform their best.
A warm, welcoming, and memorable space where first impressions are made, the lobby sets the tone for brand and culture while offering visitors comfortable seating as they wait. Activities that take place in lobbies are social by default, requiring inviting layouts that encourage conversation.
