HWP is a privately held Women’s Business Enterprise and Women Owned Small Business, which alone makes us fairly unique. We began in 2005 with a handful of employees and are now a mid-sized company. About half of our team works remotely full-time and the rest have the flexibility to work remotely or from our New Jersey or California offices.
As we’ve grown, we’ve strived to maintain the best aspects of small-company culture. We truly care about each other and support personal and professional growth. Although maintaining our culture while growing has been challenging, we’re so committed to it that we’ve established Culture as one of our three internal management pillars. The Culture Pillar plans most of our virtual and live events, from team-building to group volunteering. This team also periodically surveys the staff to ensure the company culture is meeting their needs. We’re always listening and ready to evolve.
Culture
We are proud to have received numerous awards for the quality of our work, as well as for our workplace. In addition to being named an MM&M Best Place to Work, we have also received the Inc. Best Workplaces award. Although the COVID-19 pandemic made it challenging to maintain meaningful connections to each other both professionally and personally, we are very focused on reaffirming our culture and enhancing quality of life at HWP.
HWP continues to feel like a small company in many ways. Maintaining this feeling can be challenging as we continually refine our structure and processes to meet the needs of a growing team. But we believe that our success in maintaining our caring culture and supportive atmosphere is what continues to set us apart and makes HWP such a great place to work.

Professional Development/
Mentoring
HWP has always supported our team’s professional development, through peer mentoring and company support of continuing education via tuition reimbursement. In 2020 we took it a step further, creating a Leadership Capabilities Development Program, headed by our internal Leadership Pillar team.
This program is a collaboration between our Leadership Pillar and an external executive coach. Each year’s participants receive a variety of assessments, including from colleagues, aimed at identifying areas of strength and potential areas of improvement. The participants then work with a coach monthly for 11 months to develop and implement an action plan. Follow-up assessments are then conducted to measure progress toward goals.
After completion of the 2020 program, participants and colleagues alike reported substantial growth in leadership skills. The program was modified and expanded in 2021 based on team feedback and will continue to evolve to ensure it meets the needs of our current and future leaders.

George Morimoto
Associate Director, Budget Analysis
Maintaining work-life balance is our greatest daily challenge. Uncontrollable external factors regularly make for very short deadlines in our industry, and many aspects of agency life can feel like they are beyond any one individual’s control.
But because our talented staff is our most valuable asset, the leadership team continually reinforces the importance of work-life balance and works hard to maintain that balance. We seek to not just address workplace stress when it happens but to communicate openly and honestly to proactively manage it.
First, we are transparent with new team members about the type of work we do and the workload. When anyone’s workload becomes too heavy, we all pitch in to help out, and we continually seek ways to more efficiently utilize our precious human resources. Our benefits package is generous—including extended holiday breaks--and this also helps our team to release accumulated stress.
