“We’ve come to expect and look forward to pushing a button that elevates our feet or reclines with shoulder and head support. A sofa like the Gaia series looks amazing and also features a reclining function, which is exceptional in a sectional. Like so many of our pieces, it is designed and manufactured in Italy, a great trend in the European furniture we carry.”

“There’s something very comforting about returning to European manufacturing,” he says. “These Italian and other designers are creating fresh and exciting items that, again, you’ll only find here.”
The interior designer cites the Lavander Sideboard as an example of where contemporary furniture is going. Structured for generously proportioned dining areas, the Lavander can stand alone or complement the Atlantis Crystal Art Table. Both are examples of furniture with unconventional patterns and surfaces that stand out rather than going along with the crowd.
Experimenting and exploring in design is part of the Copenhagen experience. “We don't talk about dining sets per se,” Brantley says. “We want to work with you to select the items that best fit your aesthetic and lifestyle. We love having this dialogue.”
In addition to selecting and rotating accent items and artwork, Brantley recommends knowing the exact dimensions of a room you are detailing, even bringing a floor plan, if possible. Items shown in Copenhagen's spacious showroom vignettes may lead one to think that almost anything will fit in their home. Sometimes, looks can be deceiving in such a large space. Having room specifications will help you envision which furnishings can best fit to achieve your desired outcome.
"Also, given the trends in power motion, architects must include floor outlets in new builds and renovations," he says. "This allows us to completely customize a piece of furniture for someone's space. Like a couture article of clothing, it feels that much more special when you know something has been crafted from the finest materials just for you." For those in existing homes without floor outlets, any power motion seat can be fitted with a battery pack and floated away from a wall for cord-free enjoyment.

We're living in a new era of furniture design, an exciting time when form meets functionality in luxurious ways we have never seen before. Whether you’re considering a power motion sofa or an expandable coffee table, the new blend of innovation, comfort and style will take your breath away. Maurice Brantley, director of interior design at Copenhagen is delighted with the changes he’s seeing.
“I wanted to use my creative skills in a way that was beneficial to people,” he says. “A friend told me about the free-flowing, organic work environment at Copenhagen, in addition to the sense of family across the organization. You can tell how enjoyable it is to work here when you look at how many long-term employees we have.”
Brantley, whose clients now include the children of many of his early customers, says every workday feels a little bit like he’s going to a playground, given the showroom’s consistently new pieces and the design challenges he and his clients enjoy solving.
“It’s so much fun to help clients express themselves with furniture, art and accessories,” says the designer. “My goal is always to complete an interior design job that reflects well on my customers and thus myself. I want people to feel a sense of surprise and wonder when they walk in, to craft a space that doesn’t look like anything they’ve seen before.”
Like all designers at Copenhagen, Brantley sees exciting trends in home furnishings, beginning with power motion in seating. He says that, unlike two decades ago, more sofas move and recline today than don’t.
Interior Designer Says European Furnishings Are Full of Surprises
“The intersection of luxury and comfort has never felt more satisfying, with examples spread throughout Copenhagen Imports showrooms.
The Viking Chair exemplifies the timeless design and minimalist Scandinavian style and there’s an aesthetic comfort in the mid-century design, with wood accents that impart an organic feel.
“I think it’s important to bring in organic elements when dealing with contemporary furnishings,” Brantley says. “The same can be said for our accessories, like our sculptures of the human form. They are crafted of wood but have key metal elements. These works of art are just a few of the countless examples of pieces you won’t find anywhere else.”
The reason, he says, is because the Copenhagen buyers are willing to bring back items that are unexpected to the American market. He notes the purchasing team recently returned from a buying trip in Milan that will result in many new, exciting items entering the showroom this fall and winter.
“If you live among beautiful objects,” he says, “you carry a sense of calm from being comfortably cocooned. You can then bring that beauty everywhere with you.” The idea that harmonious surroundings can improve our state of mind is guiding more and more people to design mindful spaces that foster attention to self-care and wellness. With decades of experience in interior design, Brantley can vouch for just how much a person can be shaped by the spaces they spend time in. That’s why he’s proud to have spent the past 23 years helping Tucson-area residents curate their living spaces.
After graduating from Arizona State with a degree in theater production design, Brantly worked in hospitality for several years, primarily in San Francisco. He honed his management skills with a major hotel group but eventually returned to his native Tucson when a friend told him about an open position with Copenhagen — a local, family-owned contemporary furniture retailer with locations in Arizona and Texas.
Sofas are far from the only pieces that move, Brantley says. Cool coffee tables “unfurl like a flower” and can adapt physically to all of our needs. He cites the Gemelli Coffee Table and the MyFlower Coffee Table as premier examples.
“These are very architectural pieces, designed by Naos with the quality and craftsmanship of something that is very finely engineered. There is a lot of thought that goes into these; they are like moving sculptures. The Gemelli has crystalized surfaces that overlap, sliding in and out. Naos specializes in these movable sculptural tables.”
“A beautiful piece like the handblown canoe bowl on a coffee table or dining table centerpiece can bring a setting alive, especially as the light dances off the glass.”

Interior environments are ever-evolving and change with the flow of seasons and advances in comfort technologies. Sound design advice, however, is timeless in its ability to help shape and rework a space. Brantley suggests that accessories should represent a season, and you can rotate in a new piece to change the tenor of the room. He recommends selecting an anchor piece or two and then moving the accessories in and out.
