Intergraph Smart® Review
Making informed decisions is critical when owners perform maintenance, turn-arounds and revamps on their existing facilities. Having a 3D view of facilities will help make better decisions and reduce risks for personnel and the plant.
Real time As-Built data through laser scan technology. The point cloud data is in a central single source of truth data store either on premise or in the cloud so all parties have access to the same source data. The same point cloud can be used in multiple operational tasks.
Plant owners are always looking to lower the risk and cost of operating the facility. One vital component is to have easy access to up-to-date plant information in the form of documents and 3D models. This helps make quick and correct decisions on maintenance and safety issues. The challenge is how to obtain and maintain this information.
Existing facilities can be scanned with Leica technology using standard scanner set-ups and also scanners on cars, drones, etc., to facilitate the fast and accurate capture of the facility. As this can be done so efficiently, we can repeat the scanning at selected intervals to keep the model current with any changes that may have been made - thus providing a reliable source for the operational team to make the right decisions to keep the plant safe and in working order.

The one thing that is certain in operating a plant is that there will be changes. The teams working these changes need a current basis to execute these changes efficiently, which means they need to know the current state of what is out there.
vALUE PROP
There is no need to re-draw/design the models coming from various sources. The new fit-for-purpose As-Built model allows consolidation of model data from existing sources. Also, it allows projects to be executed on this consolidated data using one common set of tools and workflows, thus reducing costs and increasing efficiency and quality. In addition to the benefits on project execution, Smart 3D 2018 reduces the cost of maintenance and upgrade of the As-Built data. Therefore, it reduces the per capita cost of maintaining As-Built data.
The challenge Owners face may be divided into two categories: 1. The need to consolidate all design models that may be in different formats into one As-Built model that can be efficiently used for operations and maintenance 2. Ensure any plant changes that are done as part of maintenance, revamps or extensions are accurately captured and consolidated into the As-Built model
The latest version of Intergraph Smart 3D provides the capability to consolidate data from different tools such as Smart 3D, PDS and PDMS to a common fit-for-purpose As-Built format. In addition to bringing 3D design data into a common As-Built format, Smart 3D also has the capability to reference in laser scan point clouds to bring in the As-Built status of the asset. Any discrepancies between the 3D model and the laser scan may be visually identified.
Plant/Asset Owners have several challenges when it comes to operating and maintaining facilities. One of the major challenges is to perform plant changes of varying magnitude while the plant is operating. Owners and the EPCs they subcontract need an accurate As-Built model to facilitate this work process.
Smart 3D provides project management capabilities to control the changes. Smart 3D has the capability to include point clouds in drawings to show the new design in the context of the As-Built. This consolidated model can now be used for ongoing Operations and Maintenance activities such as generating inspection drawings, reports and so on.
In this manner, Smart 3D provides a unique solution for the consolidation of data from disparate sources into a common As-Built format for effective and efficient execution of revamp projects. Therefore, Smart 3D helps reduce the total per capita cost of maintaining As-Built data.

Intergraph Smart® Instrumentation
LOOP CHECKS
INSPECTIONS
The ability to quickly get up-to-date and as designed documentation to check out the loop and not lose time finding or checking if the data is the latest has a high value. The sooner the loop is checked the sooner the system can go online. In addition, the Smart Instrumentation data and deliverables can be made available on mobile devices like tablets but also headsets like those from RealWare that has voice-activated queries and displays the data/documents on a small screen on a field safe headset. The mobile device will also enable ‘red lining’ to document deviations and actions.
After installation of an instrument loop or modifications to an existing loop it had to checked out to ensure it works properly. The challenge is to get the accurate and as-installed documentation and information such as the loop diagram, instrument specifications, installation details, and engineering practices/rules for the plant. Next, we must record the finding whether good or bad and assign actions in case corrective actions are needed.
Smart Instrumentation is the single source of truth. All control system data from instruments, wiring, installation, and process data is in one place with Smart Instrumentation. All documentation created from Smart Instrumentation is basically a report of that data. So if we request the documentation for the loop check, we are sure we are receiving the data as designed and can do the check based on that. The deliverables are...
created automatically, including the graphical reports like loop diagram or termination diagrams. Smart Instrumentation has revision control so items on the deliverables are marked with revisions if applicable.
Instrumentation is important for plant safety and the production process. For that reason, instrument loops need to be checked in case of failures, for regular inspections or after modifications to ensure everything is working correctly. Smart Instrumentation can optimize this task to ensure trouble-free operations.
CONTROL SYSTEM DESIGN
CONTROL SYSTEMS
The ability to take the existing design and update or expand it and then merge back to create the as-built offers a lot of value in terms of time savings, but most importantly, providing quality and up-to-date design that allow the operational team to make a quick and right decision when errors occur in the process or production need to be adjusted.
The control system at a plant is – after equipment – the highest cost on the CAPEX side and definitely the highest cost on the OPEX (maintenance) side. It has to control the product and its quality and the safety of the facility. There also is a lot of components and data involved and key is to keep it all current to enable the operational team to make the right decisions quickly. There are always changes going on to expand, update and replace. The big challenge is to do all this in a facility that is running.
Smart Instrumentation has a mode for engineering and for operations. The operational mode allows for what is called the project management, or ‘as-built.’ workflow. In this scenario the owner can ‘carve’ out a part of the plant to put that in a project to work on. Once completed, it can be merged back to create the new as-build situation with the new or added instruments. On top of the powerful engineering and design capabilities of...
Smart Instrumentation it is a unique and proven solution to manage the instruments at the plant and protects the owner’s key investment.
Even on a mid-size plant there are thousands of instruments. The challenge is to manage all these tags and create the required documentation for construction, commissioning and operations. The Smart choice is to have Smart Instrumentation do the work for you.
Providing direct and fast access to the 3D design and enabling you to walk through the design and perform queries on the data. Plus, see what has changed since the last review offers tremendous value for the owner and helps to ensure the right design is delivered on time to support their business objectives. In addition, the mobile capability allows the owner to quickly ask domain experts around the world to review parts of the design to make sure they are compliant and meet the operational needs and standards. To have this function will save millions during the many years of operating the facility.
Building a new facility often involves a major investment from the owners. To meet their business objectives, they need to make sure the facility is built according their specifications and, of course, on time and on budget. To track that one part of the process is the model review during project execution. The owners will need to review the design and make sure it meets the requirements for safety, operations and their best practices. They want...

To communicate with different operational teams there is a need to create deliverables such as reports to support tasks like inspections, maintenance work, etc. In addition, reports are used to do studies like the cost of certain types of equipment or instruments; basically, data mining and analysis. Making the reports requires time. In addition, as the data comes from various sources, reports are often using different methods to create them. This...
results in learning different systems. It is a challenge to produce a report that has data from one or more data sources without serious IT involvement. Also, as data becomes ‘cheaper,’ i.e., more available from the different tools, end users would like to perform analytics and have a simpler way to weed through data to produce information that will enable quick and right decisions.
Having access to data is fine, but it is data within context that drives the smartest decisions. Tools such as Power BI in combination with our Web APIs help derive actionable information out of the data.

Hexagon PPM and ASD offers a seamless solution to support the FEED work process. It ensures data consistency between the tasks and facilitates making the right decision early for a successful downstream project execution.
In the FEED phase of a project most of the decisions are on investment, safety and operability. This is a crucial step to make the right decision that will determine project execution and success downstream. The initial physical layout of the plant plays a key role in this decision scenario.
Smart Process Engineering will assist in process design and decision making. At one point this process design must be transformed into a 3D conceptual model. One solution is OptiPlant from ASD (a Hexagon partner), that will make the 3D model and do studies on cost, safety, constructability and operability. After the concept phase the model can be imported into Smart 3D for detailed design work.

Having the ability to design an SLD while directly cross-referencing to downstream deliverables is a challenge here.
SLD. Also, the model, in SLD format, can be shared with electrical analysis tools to run various electrical studies. If an electrical model gets updated with loading, cabling, or any other information, major subsequent report deliverables get updated in real time, eliminating a need for cross-reference check work.
Power is often taken for granted. However, we all quickly understand the importance if it goes out. The electrical engineer is tasked to design the distribution system and its protection devices to ensure a reliable and safe power supply for the plant’s assets.
Preparing a load schedule is one of the earliest tasks that helps to determine the amount of power required for an installation. This information is then used by electrical engineers to properly size cables, generators and other equipment as well as to determine the proper overload, protection and control systems. Multiple Load Schedules may be required to find out the operating peak. Hence, having an integrated platform to consolidate, analyze and report Electrical Loads is a challenge here.
Intergraph Smart Electrical (SEL) offers a holistic approach to address the challenges of electrical engineers and designers to prepare a Load Schedule. Having the automation tool i nhand, SEL users specify every single and/or group of electrical loads with operating modes. In SEL, Load Schedule cross-references to other project deliverables such as Single Line Diagrams, schematics, datasheets and others, that ensures data consistency throughout all the project deliverables.
Distributing the load over the electrical network is important from an availability point of view, as well as from a cost perspective given the cables and copper involved to make the connections.
