This Leadership Edge session featured Oliver Wang, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Ping An Healthcare and Technology Company. Oliver was previously Senior Director of Alibaba’s software company and Chief Technology Officer of Jinshan Software, where he launched China’s first online game. He attended Nan Jing University when he was 16 years old and graduated with a Bachelors in Computer Science.
When Ping An Healthcare and Technology Company was founded four years ago, the healthcare experience in China was poor, with long waiting times, crowded conditions and short consultations. There was also no penetration of technology in healthcare.

Big Data, Better Doctor
Although visiting the doctor is a low-frequency activity, health monitoring is a high-frequency activity. Big Data sensors can collect and monitor the body’s status and link this to the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart devices to help prevent sickness.
Ping An Good Doctor collects data from around 33 million average monthly users. All conversations with the doctors, of which there are 888 covering 20 specialisms, are recorded. As a result, the data pool grows every day and gives Ping An Healthcare and Technology Company the opportunity to further improve its service.
The Ping An Good Doctor online platform offers 15-minute consultations with highly qualified doctors at any time without having to wait for an appointment. According to Oliver, the initial driver for Ping An Good Doctor was to make a difference in a sector that was ripe for disruption by enhancing efficiency and giving patients an improved healthcare experience.
However, there are still many opportunities to improve the healthcare industry through the use of technology, says Oliver. By harnessing big data, companies can give individuals full visibility of their own health in the form of a personal healthcare index.
Through more effective monitoring, any changes could be detected and preventative measures taken. The ultimate aim is to eliminate the need to consult a doctor by using Chinese medicine and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to complete four diagnostic methods: “Look, Smell, Ask and Feel”.
Efficiency and Effectiveness
A healthy outlook
The platform leverages online dialogue records between doctor and patients to improve the accuracy and efficiency of robot assistants. Ultimately, 95% of diagnoses are eventually expected to be completed by robot assistants. By applying this model, the expected cost per visit to Ping An Good Doctor will be cut to $2, according to Oliver.
Services such as Ping An Good Doctor will help lead China towards its Healthy China 2030 Vision. The aim of this initiative is to provide a family doctor for every Chinese family, a medical record for every person and an associated customized health management plan. In the future, it is hoped that healthcare technology will be able to both cure and prevent illness.
eSports is likely to continue to gain influence following the announcement that it is being featured in The Asian Games and considered by the Olympic Committee. There are currently two approaches to eSports, including people who make e-versions of their favourite sports teams and gamers who create professional leagues for games such as Fortnite. Min-Liang says the appeal lies in accessibility: “I believe that at some point in time everyone will have access to eSports… it’s not a limitation of your physical powers anymore.”
The future for Razer looks bright. As well as getting involved with entertainment convergence, Min-Liang says he is in talks with real estate companies to build “entertainment cities”. He is looking to disrupt the traditional retail model by creating malls that offer experiential retail, food and drink and digital entertainment, ranging from LAN cafes to eSports stadiums and THX-certified cineplexes. In addition, Razer is looking to develop its fintech capabilities, including payments and virtual credits, as well as explore opportunities around cryptocurrencies, according to Min-Liang.
“Everyone has access to eSports.”
