Women to Watch Portfolio Manager of the Year drives change through sustainable investment strategies and championing workplace equity
The Lakes College Culinary Club (TLCCC) started with a team of 12 students and has now expanded to over 30 members, showcasing its continued success through participation in college events and even catering for local community organisations. This program not only imparts valuable culinary skills but also teaches the significance of community service, fosters practical abilities and cultivates a professional work ethic.
Spanning ages 11 to 18, the Culinary Club challenges students to create elaborate six-course degustation dinners and manage large-scale catering for college gatherings. Chloe, a Year 7 student, praises the program for imparting essential life skills in an enjoyable way among friends. Likewise, Emily values the connections she forms despite the program’s demanding pace.
Under the guidance of Chef Joel, TLCCC contributes to the college’s ethos and the students’ personal growth. The program’s commitment to local ingredients and culinary adventures is evident as it expands to include barista training and Responsible Service of Alcohol certification. The program seamlessly merges science, art and food technology, promoting discipline and shared responsibility. TLCCC embodies a commitment to service, community engagement and student leadership, cementing its unique character and contribution to The Lakes College.

“If I’m going to leave my three children to go to work every day, it’s crucial for me to do something that makes a positive impact on the world,” said Christine Cappabianca, Women to Watch Portfolio Manager of the Year award winner.
Christine went on to do just that, making a significant impact, especially since joining Impax Asset Management in June 2021. With over $2.3 billion AUM, she’s a pivotal force in the company, managing several of Impax’s systematic strategies including the Impax Ellevate Global Women’s Leadership Fund and Sustainable Infrastructure Fund. Her role is crucial in identifying and capitalizing on returns from sustainable and thematic investment universes.
Christine’s career began in the corridors of a homeless shelter where, amid the raw realities of life, she honed skills and developed a deep empathy that shaped her approach to portfolio management.
Her journey in finance started at The Boston Company Asset Management as a quantitative analyst. Her career progressed through significant mergers, including the formation of Mellon Investments, where she played an integral role in research and portfolio management. Her focus areas included innovative themes such as the Blockchain Innovation. Notably, Christine’s expertise in ESG data as part of Mellon’s ESG Council was influential in shaping active portfolios.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Harvard University and a master’s in investment management from Boston University, complemented by the SASB FSA credential. Her education reflects diverse interests, encompassing computer programming, volunteering, and economics, a unique blend that fuels her approach to asset management. She emphasizes a structured and efficient methodology, including incorporating sustainability targets. This enables her to analyze multiple market factors simultaneously and adjust investment strategies dynamically. Christine’s ability to understand and leverage sustainability data has been key to exploiting market inefficiencies and generating alpha.
Despite widespread recognition of the social and morale benefits brought by a diverse workforce, precisely evaluating the impact of diversity on a company’s profitability is a concept that has gained traction only recently. Christine’s contribution to the industry includes this important research. Her analysis of the relationship between gender diversity and financial performance is notable, particularly her work on the Impax Gender Score. This research, published in Pensions & Investments, highlights the significance of workplace equity and gender diversity in companies that outperform.
In 2022, Christine’s achievements were manifold. She was a featured speaker at various industry events, including Envestnet’s International Women’s Day event and Impax’s Invest in Women Symposium. Her inspirational journey and insights into gender factor performance in investments not only raised her profile but also contributed significantly to the discourse on gender diversity in asset management.
Understanding that much of the alpha in the market has already been leveraged through traditional quantitative financial factors, Christine focuses on sustainability data. She sees this emerging field not as a challenge but as a fertile ground for uncovering and capitalizing on market inefficiencies. This forward-thinking approach allows her to navigate and exploit opportunities that others might overlook, positioning her at the forefront of a new wave of financial strategy that harmonizes profit with purpose.
