50TH YEAR
50 Years of Exceptional
Jeffrey S. Detwiler, Chief Executive Officer The Long & Foster® Companies
Built on half a century of excellence. Bringing you the best in luxury homes.
WELCOME TO OUR 50TH YEAR
This is a special spring — it marks our 50th year as a company and an achievement built on a foundation of real estate excellence in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. With the changing weather and beautiful blooms across our landscape, it also brings our first issue of the Long & Foster | Christie’s Luxury Homes magazine for 2018. While we celebrate and honor 50 years of valued relationships with agents and clients alike, we also look ahead to another 50 years of continued success in the luxury space. Our growth as a company remains intact and healthy, and our new status as part of HomeServices of America, a Berkshire Hathaway affiliate, will allow us to expand and further develop our luxury footprint in the most sought-after markets in the country. It provides another set of resources and assets for our agents and clients to utilize, positioning Long & Foster | Christie’s, much like the Luxury Homes magazine does, as the clear luxury market leader. Our aim for the Luxury Homes magazine is, and always will be, to provide you with both valuable insight and unique perspective into luxury living. In this issue, we dive into the world of luxury Swiss watchmaking with in-depth profiles on the masters of crafting timeless timepieces. With Triple Crown season kicking into full gear over the next two months, we take a closer look at the history of thoroughbreds, Preakness Stakes and Maryland Horse Country. You will also find interviews with the finest whiskey makers in Virginia, producing craft spirits with tradition and care just a short drive from our nation’s capital. And what would the Luxury Homes magazine be without a closer look at the world of art, from the fascinating and priceless pieces that sold at Christie’s Auction this year, like da Vinci’s $450 million oil painting, Salvator Mundi, as well as a story about the most valuable art collection in the world: The Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia. Displaying exclusive editorial content along with the most exquisite properties is what the Luxury Homes magazine represents. You can contact our luxury team today to find out for yourself why more luxury home buyers and sellers choose Long & Foster | Christie’s than any other brokerage in the Mid-Atlantic, making us the No. 1 choice for luxury and far outselling our nearest competitors. When you work with Long & Foster | Christie’s, you’ll have everything you need to find your dream home, as we offer an array of ancillary real estate and financial services, including mortgage, insurance, settlement, property management and relocation.

PHILADELPHIA
An art collection that began almost a century ago, in the city of brotherly love, houses more masterpieces than all of Europe combined.
and
MATISSE
Some know, but it still surprises many to learn that the most expensive, elaborate and revered collection of Impressionist and Modernist paintings is not in Paris, London or Rome. It can be found in Philadelphia; it’s been there for decades and its contents are valued at over $25 billion. That’s billion with a “B” and it’s the same letter that starts the last name of the man who curated it all, Albert C. Barnes. The Barnes Foundation began as an educational institution in 1925 with a simple mission to promote fine art appreciation along with arboriculture. Barnes made a fortune in antiseptics, developing a leading chemical compound that he would later sell along with his company, allowing him to pursue his passion of art and the masters who weren’t yet known to the world.

Portrait Mask (Mblo)
As an avid collector, he began amassing Matisse and Picasso masterpieces in the 1920s, while becoming well acquainted with both, and he erected a series of buildings in Merion, Pennsylvania, an idyllic suburb of Philadelphia, to serve as a complex that housed a gallery, administration buildings, educational facilities and services. In the years that followed the foundation’s opening, Barnes would make many trips abroad to further his collection, adding more paintings from the European masters and priceless antiquities from Africa and the Far East, building what would become the pre-eminent assemblage of art and artifacts — over 4,000 objects — in the world, furthering his didactic mission.
Dr. Albert C. Barnes

It was a unique approach, focusing more on being an educational landmark rather than a straightforward museum or gallery. Education was an integral part of the foundation’s mission, and collaborations with the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University resulted in courses being taught through both world-renowned academic institutions, centered on the exquisite works at the Barnes, along with their artists.

The collection grew rapidly in the early days of the foundation, and Barnes’ rapport with artists like Matisse and sculptor Jacques Lipchitz, allowed special commissions to take place on the grounds. Matisse traveled to Philadelphia specifically to work on “The Dance II,” a massive triptych that was placed above the grand windows in the main gallery space. Lipchitz erected several unique reliefs on the main building, that still stand as some of the foremost from the Cubist period. Currently the collection comprises over 900 paintings, with more than 180 from Pierre-Auguste Renoir alone. Dozens more from Paul Cezanne, Vincent van Gogh, Edgar Degas, Henri Rousseau, Claude Monet and many other masters adorn the walls. Barnes was very particular in his metho-dology, and this founding philosophy still echoes through the guiding principles nearly a century later. His “wall ens-embles” served as vignettes to history and specific periods, accompanied by explicit frames and antique furniture, along with jewelry or iron-works to accentuate styles and geographical regions, and allow for comparisons of different eras. When viewing the collection, one is reminded instantly of the importance of education that Barnes employed above all else when sharing these historical artifacts and paintings.

The importance of the collection cannot be overstated. Any single assortment housing an abundance of works by such renowned artists is remarkable, but the sheer number of noteworthy paintings housed on the foundation grounds is astounding. Encountering a Gustave Courbet or Paul Gauguin, perhaps one of their late 19th century seminal creations, is an aesthetician’s dream; but finding oneself in a single building with hundreds of influential and prominent pieces is an inimitable experience reserved exclusively to this location. Not another museum or collection can lay a similar claim, one that the Barnes Foundation has been making accurately, but never boastfully, since the 1920s. It’s as if all of the masters got together and agreed to put their best works on display in one location, to provide patrons and students alike with the fullest experience, ensuring the legacy of their pivotal paintings. Since the turn of the century, “The Barnes,” as it’s known to insiders, collectors, and the students who studied there, has become much more mainstream and accessible to outsiders. Mainly, its relocation to a downtown Philadelphia location open to the public allowed for more interaction and exposure of this multibillion-dollar collection. A subsequent documentary about the relocation and power struggle that ensued won multiple awards at film festivals around the world.

At the heart of it all remains a series of irreplaceable paintings, sculptures, artifacts and pieces that provide a historical narrative; and they happen to comprise the most valuable art collection in the world. Luxury abounds in Southeastern Pennsylvania, manifested in priceless art, and it started with the vision and thoughtfulness of Albert C. Barnes. The collection’s significance has only garnered more mutual admiration and alignment amongst the elite art establishment, from scholars to curators to brokers, and history is well preserved at this Philadelphia fixture.

t may be one of the smallest frill items by physical stature, but watches remain an essential [time] piece in the luxury sphere, and sometimes roar louder than the engine of a Ferrari. Collectors and aficionados often display their assortments with the same grandeur of a custom-designed garage filled with exotic sports cars. Perhaps it’s the small-sized nature of an actual watch that often results in more accumulation than many other luxury goods. Wearing a rare watch is equal parts prestige and ease. Swapping from your favorite Rolex to a sportier Ulysse Nardin, or dusting off the Patek Philippe heirloom, is simple and part of the accessibility that accompanies owning an exquisite watch collection. If it’s raining, you may be reluctant to take out the 1956 Jaguar Roadster, but putting a $50,000 Jaeger LeCoultre watch on your wrist has limited non sequiturs. It is fair to say that not all watch collectors wear their prized pieces, but many watch enthusiasts view it as an open accessory that is understated.
SIDE
Predating most other luxury items, watches and watchmaking have a rich European history that goes back centuries, with its most prominent roots in Switzerland. The first Swiss watchmaking guild was founded over 400 years ago in Geneva, and by the end of the 17th century, watchmaking came to dominate the Swiss economy.

The market for vintage watches is stronger than it’s ever been.

Much like their German neighbors to the north who went on to become synonymous with luxury automobile manufacturing, the Swiss are the first name in watchmaking, combining precision with craftsmanship and an unwavering pursuit of perfection. It’s unlikely to change anytime soon, either. Dethroning the Swiss masters in the watch world is akin to another country starting a National Football League and beating out the United States. It’s not only doubtful, but it’s practically impossible. The competition on the inside, however, is rife and carries on with an historical intensity that rivals Ferrari and Lamborghini, but with a far greater number of players. A look at the most famous and luxurious watchmakers in Switzerland is filled with anecdotes, rarities and remarkable price tags.

One of the most iconic luxury brands in the world, Rolex was actually founded in London but moved its headquarters in 1919 to Geneva, where it has remained to this day. A perennial leader on the global power brands list, Rolex is the largest single luxury watch brand in the world. Some experts contend it is the unanimous winner among luxury watchmakers, while others argue they have become too commercial – producing close to 2,000 watches a day. Whichever side of the exclusivity fence you sit on, one thing is certain: Rolex IS the first name in luxury watches. In October of this past year, a Rolex Daytona (model 6239) formerly owned by the late actor Paul Newman, sold at auction for $17.75 million, making it the most expensive wristwatch ever sold. The Daytona model is one of the more prolific Rolexes, generally on a much lower price scale than some of their more luxury models, but it speaks volumes to the brand that Newman, a former Oscar winner, valued so dearly. The celebrity factor surely inflated the watch’s worth, but for Rolex it’s simply another beautiful timepiece that commands attention and further increases their position as the premier luxury watchmaker – and a nice record to revel in.
Every Patek since 1839 has a unique identifier, almost like a birth certificate. Our collectors recognize that heritage of craftsmanship.
— Rebecca Ross, Watch Specialist, Christie’s
Another Swiss powerhouse based in Geneva, Patek Philippe has become synonymous with producing the most advanced mechanical watches on the planet. Many aficionados consider them the most prestigious watch manufacturers to date. Antoni Patek was a Polish watchmaker working in Geneva when he partnered with Adrien Philippe, a Frenchman credited with inventing the keyless winding mechanism, and in 1851 the company was officially formed. Numerous functionalities such as the chronograph, split seconds hand, the perpetual calendar and minute repeater were all popularized by Patek Philippe. In 2010, a Patek Philippe wristwatch produced in 1943 sold at auction through Christie’s in Geneva for $5.5 million. In addition to their claim as the premier producer, Patek Philippe remained for many years as the primary watch preference for much of European Royalty. Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, Victor Emanuel of Italy and Princess Louise and Christian IX of Denmark all wore Patek Philippe’s as their exclusive wristwatch or decorative timepiece. One of their most iconic watches, an anniversary edition created in 1989, marking 150 years, is considered the most complicated mechanical watch ever created. The Calibre 89 is so advanced it can account through its complications a date for Easter, sunrise and sidereal time, and it even adds a day to February for leap years. As further proof of their industry leading technical prowess, in 2005, the company introduced a silicon escapement wheel, the first of its kind.

Known for their precision chronometers beloved by aviators and divers for decades, the Grenchen, Switzerland-based luxury watch producer was sold last year to CVC Capital Partners in a deal worth nearly $900 million. Breitling’s beginnings are traced to the late 19th century when Leon Breitling, using only Swiss components, still the modus operandi today, started making exquisite timepieces with certified chronometers.
One of their most famous models, developed in the 1940s, featured a new circular slide rule addition to the bezel specifically for aircraft pilots. The Navitimer, in the following decades, would become the official timepiece of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA). There was even a version of the watch that included the AOPA logo on the dial, cementing the partnership between Breitling and the international aviation community. Breitling has also had a longstanding partnership with Bentley, the world-class luxury car manufacturer, and produces several anniversary watch models that are favorites among luxury collectors. Perhaps their most memorable collaboration is with the iconic James Bond films, which saw Sean Connery as 007 donning a Top Time model that featured a geiger counter to allow the secret agent to track down stolen nuclear warheads in the smash hit Thunderball. With forays into space, international espionage and air travel, Breitling has remained a luxury fixture in the watch world, often landing high on the list of the premier Swiss manufacturers.
Perhaps no truer “partnership” exists among the elite Swiss watchmakers than that of the duo responsible for creating the luxury timepieces at Audemars Piguet: Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet. Both were accomplished watchmakers prior to their 1875 collaboration, but they made a concentrated effort to focus their abilities on their respective strong suits. Audemars took charge of production and all technical and mechanical aspects of the operation, while Piguet focused on the management and sales of the organization. An exceptional partnership was born indeed in Vallee de Joux, Switzerland, and still bears fruit today with revenues last year topping $900 million. Credited with creating the first repeater wristwatch in 1892, Audemars Piguet was second to none for their mastery of complex watch movements, a hallmark of their ability and craftsmanship. Their current models are no exception to precision and regularly fetch upwards of $200,000, putting them in the upper sphere of luxury, exclusive watches.
L u x u r y H o m e s S p r i n g 2 0 1 8
Their models from yesteryear have only grown in value as the years have passed, and a triple calendar version model that only yielded a production of 20 watches, half of which are unaccounted for, sold at a Swiss auction last year along with another rare Audemars Piguet for over $800,000. Their most popular collections include the Royal Oak, Millenary and the Jules Audemars – named for the company’s ingenious founder – all of which feature the technical aspects of precision watchmaking prominently. If you are lucky enough to get your hands on an Audemars Piguet, or even get one on your wrist, it’s easy to see why this iconic Swiss watchmaker is considered royalty among the masters. The Swiss stronghold on luxury watchmaking is centuries old and looks to be well preserved for many more years. True artisanship coupled with an extraordinary pride in their craft has positioned the Swiss as the luxury authority on watches, and that passion for excellence is what continues driving the legendary watch companies from the Alps to keep pushing the boundaries. The newer models continue the legacy of product superiority and the relics only grow larger in value, as celebrities, collectors, auction houses, museums and millionaires keep amassing their priceless variations.

When one of the most decorated tennis players in history puts a watch on his wrist, you take notice. Rafael Nadal, or simply Rafa as he is known throughout the world, has been turning heads for over a decade with his tenacious style on the court; but now your first gaze might be to the timepiece he is sporting, rather than his dazzling forehand. Nadal partnered with luxury watchmaker Richard Mille in 2010, but it’s their latest collaboration that is turning wrists.

The industry in recent years has seen an upswing. In 2012, Maryland expanded casino gambling, and the additional revenue now helps subsidize larger purses and breeder awards. Wagering is also making a comeback, with bettors attracted to more upscale off-track locations.
When it comes to the Preakness, it’s working. Last year, a record 140,327 fans turned out to see Cloud Computing finish first. The previous year set an attendance record of 135,256. Handle in 2017 — the amount of money wagered — hit a record high of $97.1 million for the Preakness weekend’s 14-race program.
Two years ago, Stronach brought more luxury to the rail-side Preakness Village by adding a Stronach Group owner’s chalet – a luxury tent stocked with Maryland horse country memorabilia along with modern luxe touches and technology. It was, she described, Ralph Lauren meets Soho House. The company also has partnered with other chalet sponsors to build up their spaces and bring more luxury for VIP guests.
When Plank bought Sagamore Farm in 2007, it was with the stated goal of producing a Triple Crown winner. The 530-acre Glyndon, Maryland, property had seen better days, but it came with a pedigree of its own.
As the 143rd preakness stakes approaches, thoroughbred racing in Maryland is regaining its momentum.
O
Only three years after Plank acquired the farm, his horse Shared Account won the $2 million Breeder’s Cup, an astoundingly quick success in an industry in which some owners try for decades to produce a stand-out performer.
Three years later, the equine athlete’s name was cemented in Thoroughbred racing history with the first running of the Preakness Stakes.
Maryland Thoroughbred Racing
With three of the state’s eight new stallions standing stud in Maryland this year on his farm, Boniface said he sees a bright future for Maryland-bred horses. Chances are now increasing that there will be another Preakness trophy on the mantel of the state’s Thoroughbred operations, he said.
Also attracting more interest is the undeniable star power of Canadian businesswoman Belinda Stronach, whose family’s company Stronach Group owns three Maryland race tracks including Pimlico, and the involvement of Kevin Plank, the Baltimore businessman restoring famed, historic Sagamore Farm to its former greatness and beyond.
“Optimism is part of being a horseman,” Boniface said. “You’re always hopeful.”
Hitting A New Stride
“I look at it as, I run the racing and wagering platforms, and it’s up to us to curate the content on those platforms and make sure the experience lives up to our customers’ expectations,” Stronach said.
Stronach hopes such investment plus the energy that relative newcomers like Plank bring into the sport will entice others to get involved, even if it’s as investors pooling funds to own shares of a horse.
“Betting can be complicated, and handicapping can be intimidating,” Stronach said. “We’ll be launching the new wagering app to address the gamification of horse racing and make it simpler for new fans to get into the sport.”
Maryland’s Thoroughbred breeding and racing tradition has endured many ups and downs over the years, stretching back to well before the Preakness became the second jewel in the Triple Crown. These days, fortunes are again on the rise for the sport of kings in the state.
With Stronach as its chairman and president, the Stronach Group continues to invest in its Maryland parks, including $20 million in improvements and new infrastructure at Laurel Park in recent years, with millions more in upgrades at Pimlico.
Alfred G. Vanderbilt, Jr., received the farm as a 21st birthday gift from his mother in 1933. Vanderbilt later was owner and president of Pimlico, and his farm achieved international fame. Its most well-known product was Native Dancer, who in 1953 won both the Belmont and Preakness stakes. Vanderbilt sold the property in the 1980s, and it languished.
With greater potential upside, horse breeders and owners are showing renewed interest in Maryland. Live foal numbers have increased, improving the odds of a future Maryland-bred champion.
The last Maryland-bred horse to win at the Preakness was Deputed Testamony, co-owned by J. William Boniface, in 1983. Boniface, second- generation proprietor of Bonita Farm, in Harford County, Maryland, keeps his replica of the Woodlawn Vase on the mantel in his drawing room, overlooking the pastures where his champion horse lived to the age of 32.
n Oct. 25, 1870, the American Thoroughbred horse Preakness won an opening-day race at a new track named Pimlico Race Course, just outside of Baltimore.
Black-Eyed Susans and Rye. The official drink at Pimlico on race day is the Black-Eyed Susan, which generally involves vodka plus rum or bourbon, Cointreau, and one or two kinds of citrus juice or sour mix. Purists may prefer the Preakness Cocktail, a Manhattan-like drink some consider more true to Maryland’s roots because it features rye.
The Triple Crown’s middle jewel. In the past 100 years, only a dozen horses have won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes in the same year. The purse for Preakness winners has stood at $1.5 million since 2014.
Rail-side luxury. Two years ago, the Stronach Group’s VIP owner’s chalet made its debut to rave reviews. It combined modern technology and luxury with accents harking back to early Maryland racing and hunt club culture. “Preakness Village and Turfside Terrace, for ticket holders and VIPs, offer more premium trackside experiences,”said Lynda O’Dea, who pioneered the Preakness Village concept as marketing vice president for the Maryland Jockey Club, and is now a Long & Foster | Christie’s agent.
Things to Love About the Preakness Stakes
B
Spotlight on Maryland horse country. The counties surrounding Baltimore are home to famed horse farms and training facilities. A study released in 2016 found Maryland’s horse industry accounts for more than $1.15 billion in economic activity and supports more than 11,000 jobs.
The Woodlawn Vase. Said to be the most valuable trophy in U.S. sports, the vase is only ceremonially awarded to winners – they don’t get to take it home. The Tiffany & Co. creation is considered priceless but has an estimated replacement value of over $4 million. The 30-pound sterling silver trophy is escorted under guard to Pimlico each year from its permanent home at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Winners receive smaller, $30,000 replicas.
Race Day Fashion. Lana Rae, a Baltimore style consultant and founder of Fashion Awards MD, said a superb hat or fascinator is de rigueur, especially for women, adding “I think most people choose their hat before they choose their outfit.” Rae said one’s Preakness attire should be determined by where they will be seen at the park: glamorous for grandstand seating and VIP areas, fun for the infield party.
ig money, old traditions, rail-side luxury and Rye in Maryland on one of Thoroughbred racing’s biggest days Is this the year another Secretariat, American Pharoah or Seattle Slew captures first place at the Preakness to become a Triple Crown hopeful? The world will find out on May 19, the day of the 143rd running of the Preakness Stakes. Here are seven things to love about the race:

othing compares to owning a piece of history, as any collector of antique furniture, jewelry, or cars can attest. But it’s rare to have a chance to own a fragrance of the past. The recent recreation of a 150-year-old perfume buried in a Bermuda shipwreck did just that. The story of the creation of the fragrance, Mary Celestia, illustrates how the art, science, and business of perfume-making has changed, yet how smells have an enduring power.
On the bottom of the Sea, inside a 19th century shipwreck, a perfume laid waiting
T
The ship ran aground and sunk off the shore of Bermuda and lay buried, until a hurricane in 2011 exposed the ship’s intact bow. The perfume bottle was discovered along with a few other rare finds. A team led by Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone, who heads The Bermuda Perfumery, and perfumer Jean-Claude Delville of drom fragrances, unsealed the perfume bottle, analyzed its contents, and eventually recreated them with modern technology. But like an archaeological site that contains remnants of past inhabitants, the bottles contained clues as to the original materials inside. Borrowing techniques from forensics, drom scent chemists were able to reconstruct the original contents of the perfume.
L
N
“Removing the seal in drom’s New York scent studio and laboratory was a once-in-a-lifetime experience”, Ramsay-Brackstone says, but not a pleasant one. “The smell was so stinky that we had to evacuate the building.” It was no surprise that a perfume would have degraded over all that time, but the power of the smell — a mix of burning tires, rotten grapefruit, and “dirty pirate feet” — was overwhelming. “It felt like a whole flock of ghosts came out,” she says.
O
The perfume in question was sealed inside a bottle tucked in the cargo hold of the Civil War-era steamer Mary Celestia on a trans-Atlantic voyage from London in 1864.
S
Compared with today’s fragrances — precise formulas of dozens to hundreds of ingredients — perfumes in 1864 were simple blends of natural materials such as essential oils, aromatic resins, and animal-based ingredients such as civet and ambergris. They were luxury items for elite customers that were often dabbed on clothing such as a scarf or gloves, and the purpose was not so much personal expression as to overpower the unpleasant stench of city streets. Perfumery was centered in London, not Paris, and the layers of meaning we associate with different fragrances had not yet developed. “You didn’t have all the cultural associations we have today, like women wear flowers and men wear woods,” says Ramsay-Brackstone. The perfumers consulted with the French perfume archive Osmotheque to gain insight about the fragrance’s maker, Piesse & Lubin, a perfume house based on London’s Bond Street. G.W. Septimus Piesse is a noted figure in fragrance history; a perfumer and chemist, he authored one of the first modern books about perfume, an 1857 work called The Art of Perfumery. Piesse was the first to begin speaking about odors in terms of music, such as top, middle, and base “notes” of perfumes. “When he would smell different scents, he would hear music,” Ramsay-Brackstone says.
The analysis and research suggested that the perfume buried in the Maria Celestia contained an uplifting blend of neroli and citrus oils — popular in Piesse’s native Italy — as well as rosewood, civet, and ambergris to add depth. “It’s a simple, lovely fragrance,” says Ramsay-Brackstone. While perfumery has changed dramatically in since the 19th century, these notes still resonate with consumers today as they did back then. The perfumers recreated the original perfume as much as possible. They employed synthetic substitutes for materials that are no longer used, such as civet, and a small amount of aromatic molecules like hedione, to give the perfume a modern radiance and persistence. “The original intention” Ramsay-Brackstone says, was to present the original bottle and recreation as an homage to a foundational perfumer and a chance to educate the public about Bermuda’s fascinating shipwreck history. “It was not my intention to commercialize it,” she says. But customers, enthralled by the story of the buried perfume, were eager to own it. Eventually, the team manufactured 1,864 bottles of Mary Celestia Eau de Toilette, with part of the proceeds donated to a foundation dedicated to exploring and conserving Bermuda’s shipwrecks. The opportunity to own a bottle of the past captured the imagination of the public and brought worldwide press coverage.

The DNA of scents and fragrance ingredients evolved with time and scientific discovery, but scents’ role in our lives stays unchanged. Creating lasting memories and etching visceral impressions into our souls.
Perfumers today are very much creators of stories. Chris Diienno, a master perfumer and President of the American Society of Perfumers, says that a perfumer’s task is to marry a fragrance to an idea, which transforms a perfume from a pleasant smell into a key that unlocks imagination and memory. “If the fragrance delivers on the promise of the actual story, it’s fantastic,” he says.
L u x u r y H o m e s S p r i n g 2 0 1 8
Fragrance Notes that make up the perfumer’s palette.
Piesse’s fragrances may have been simple, but his thinking about them wasn’t. He had begun blending ingredients to recreate the scents of exotic flowers that could not be distilled, such as frangipani. He also began giving his fragrances names that evoked abstract emotions and exotic locations. Even working with a limited palette, Piesse had discovered the essential role of a perfumer today: to weave fantasies with scent. It’s also how brands create signature scents and an identity. Ramsay-Brackstone says that the brand she heads, Lili Bermuda, is “a fragrance house that tells a story of Bermuda through olfaction''. For inspiration, she draws on the ocean, the beach, and local flora such as Bermuda cedar, bay rum, fennel, citrus, and tropical flowers. The brand maintains a signature style and limited distribution that has earned it a loyal following. It’s a way of creating that has been lost on many commercial perfume brands, she says, that rush to copycat popular fragrance types. “Piesse was trying to recreate something from his own story,” says Ramsay-Brackstone, yet he was limited in materials. Modern perfumers now have a palette of thousands of ingredients with which to tell their stories, from single molecules to natural ingredients that are cultivated around the world.

ver the past decade, no other spirit has grown in popularity among luxury circles quite like whiskey. It has surged ahead of craft vodkas and gins as the most prominent of libations in all discerning cocktail corners of the globe, with connoisseurs and true enthusiasts preferring it neat. The experts will agree usually, sipping the best whiskies in the world neat (without ice or mixers) is the only way an artisan whiskey should be enjoyed. From the hallowed malting houses of the Scottish Isles to the unlikely mountain distilleries of Japan, award-winning whiskey is emerging around the world, and Virginia is no exception to this trend. The first whiskey ever produced in North America was in Virginia, a fact filled with tradition and history that many Old Dominion natives take to heart, especially the master distillers producing some of the finest whiskies in the world. Virginia is no stranger to craftsmanship and artisan production, as settlers expanded throughout the Commonwealth, they brought European traditions to every corner of the state. And over time, those traditions evolved and took on their own unique shape. The story of Virginia whiskey is no different, and owes much credit to the first president of the United States, George Washington, who planted rye on his Mount Vernon estate in the late 18th century that was used to make whiskey. The famous founding father even turned quite a profit from his distillery, and right up to his death in 1799 it’s estimated that he had nearly 150 gallons of whiskey left in storage. While fine Virginia whiskies can be purchased around the world now, there is nothing quite as enjoyable as going straight to the source. Experiencing the true creation of such a glorious product not only offers a newfound appreciation for its luxuriousness, but it also provides a glimpse into the craft itself. Sampling some of the best whiskey Virginia has to offer is easier than you may think, and while there are several incredible options in the state, these three distinct distilleries are producing award-winning products that every whiskey aficionado, from Senators to CEOs, should experience firsthand.

fficially producing spirit since 1934, A. Smith Bowman sets the gold standard for whiskey and bourbon in the Commonwealth. Their unofficial beginnings are likely prior to the repeal of Prohibition in 1934, when the Bowman family used excess grain from their family farm to distill spirits. Once legal again, the operation was in full swing, ultimately outgrowing their traditional distillery in Fairfax County decades later and in 1988 they relocated to a more modern facility 60 miles south in Fredericksburg. Master Distiller Brian Prewitt shared insight on the history, the whiskey, and the joy of producing world-class spirits for discerning clientele.
A. Smith Bowman Distillery
Probably our back to back wins of “World’s Best Bourbon” in 2016 for our Abraham Bowman Port Finished Bourbon and again in 2017 for our John J. Bowman Single Barrel at the World Whiskey Awards.
Did you apprentice somewhere first? How did you end up in distilling?
I think many of us in the industry are continually surprised and delighted to see the continued interest in whiskey and brown spirits. Yes, the industry has been changing, especially with all of the new faces that have been coming into the arena. It really makes us focus in on what we feel are the most important things — make a great product at a great value to the consumer. The increased competition is a good thing for the industry and the consumer — we have to deliver day in and day out or someone else will try to take our place.
Brian Prewitt
As whiskey has grown as a luxury product, and reigns in popularity, how have you seen the industry change?
We strive to make everyone who comes into our distillery feel like family and leave a raving fan. We want our passion to shine through the products and unique experiences that we provide. We are proud of our products and feel that they are beautiful representations of what a spirit can be. That being said we will not sit back and think that we don’t need to continually improve and evolve our spirits to meet the demands of our fans and visitors.
What has been the proudest moment thus far?
What makes your product or distillery experience unique?
My background is in Food Science, and while finishing my degree I worked at a craft brewery and got hooked on the process. I attended Master Brewer’s programs at universities, worked in a major distillery that produced various spirits, and really got to dabble with all aspects of distillation. Learning from industry legends is how I discovered A. Smith Bowman, and I couldn’t be happier about that discovery.

newer kid on the block of fine spirit making, Virginia Distillery Co. is just a few years old, but its roots begin in Ireland, where whiskey is as revered as St. Patrick. When Dr. George G. Moore first immigrated to Virginia in the 1970s from his native land, he likely didn’t know that one day his family would produce award-winning whiskey in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, just south of Charlo-ttesville. His son, Gareth Moore, carries on the legacy of his father by rein-venting American Single Malts, blending time-honored tradition with their own practices; they rely on the unique natural climate of the region to help them age their perfectly distilled whiskey. The result is flawless, and in their brief history they have been garnering more acclaim as one of the premier distilleries in America, not just Virginia.

Our property is known as Eades Hollow — named for an owner of the property from the early 1800s. Across the last 200 years it has been home to a general store, an apple orchard, and now a distillery. The site was selected for its great views but also importantly for its abundant supply of pure well water.

Why whiskey?
GM:
Ten years from now I’d like the distillery to be a part of a thriving American Single Malt industry. While the category is still in its infancy today, the amount of work going into it across the US is promising for years to come, and we’re hopeful that we’ll be a positive part of it.
What’s on the horizon for the distillery?
It’s very rewarding. Earlier this year, our Virginia Highland Whiskey was awarded “Best American Single Malt” by the World Whiskey Awards; it was a wonderful surprise and very humbling to be recognized on a global level.
LH:
You recently won a big award, what does that recognition mean to you?
Visiting Virginia Distillery Company will yield one of the most picturesque drives in the state. A rural setting, with mountain views and lush trees makes for the perfect whiskey exploring experience. There were no mistakes made when Virginia Distillery chose their coveted location, it’s remarkable and breathtaking, luxurious and rustic, with a calming sense that makes you feel truly at home. The hospitality, and of course the whiskey, will have you planning your return trip before you can say Highland Single Malt.
GM:
What makes Virginia Distillery Co. unique?
Single malt whiskey was my late father’s passion, and it became my own as well. His vision for a whiskey that took the best of the old world and the best of the new world was something that I knew I had to carry on. Our production team was mentored by two industry legends from the Scottish single malt industry, the late Dr. Jim Swan and Harry Cockburn. Together, they helped engineer the facility and fine-tune the distillate and wood profile to leverage the local Virginia climate. Our production team now proudly carries on the traditions handed down to them.
I think the fundamental thing that makes our product and experience unique is that we are taking the best of the old world and the best of the new world in our product — traditional distilling techniques, maturing in a non-traditional climate. We’re not re-inventing the wheel, rather we’re taking something traditional and making it our own — and making it better. That is an American tradition — taking food, beverages, and other crafts from our forefathers and making it uniquely American.
Tell us a little about the history of the property and its beginnings.
ue west, about an hour, from the nation’s capital lies the bucolic town of Purcellville, Virginia. It has charm, and history, and it also houses the first legal distillery in Loudoun County since Prohibition. Catoctin Creek was founded almost a decade ago by Becky and Scott Harris. The latter was a government contractor for nearly 20 years before going all in on this new whiskey venture. With the help of his wife, and chief distiller, Becky, they have produced masterful spirits that have won more awards than any other Virginia whiskey. It’s the level of detail and care that the whiskey making couple will always tout as their unique differentiator, and they do it all with huge smiles on their faces. High quality spirits are their passion, and they are not only producing them with great success, they also are an enormous reason why Virginia whiskey has grown in popularity and prestige.

Purcellville, Virginia
Becky and I chose to make whiskey because, first of all,we love it! But yes, that’s very true, the history of whiskey in the United States starts in Virginia. Virginia is the birthplace of American whiskey, and so we wanted to tell that story with an authentic craft whiskey of our own. That’s where our passion comes from, honoring tradition.
Our home is the historic Case Building on Main Street in Downtown Purcellville. It was built in 1921 on the ruins of the old Purcellville National Bank, which burned down in 1914. The building opened in 1921 as the Joseph Lodge Motor Company selling Purcellville’s first Buicks. For 51 years it was a Buick dealership, eventually becoming Case Motor Company, and then closing in 1972. After that, it passed down the Case family to become a furniture factory, and eventually a home for the Purcellville Marketplace. We purchased it from Mrs. Case when her husband, Sam Case, the furniture maker, passed away. It took us a remarkably short four months to renovate the building and make it our home for the distillery.
You believe firmly in making things from scratch, is that what sets you apart?
We’re seeing lots of Millennials drinking like their great- grandparents did. People are shifting away from wine and big-brand beer, it’s just not as popular as it used to be — and they are moving into craft spirits and craft beer. Cocktails are popular once again, you see it everywhere you go now, and the best restaurants have incredible cocktail programs with heavy emphasis on whiskey drinks, both classic and new. This is a good thing for our business.
Catoctin Creek Distilling Company Owners
I heard it was the history of whiskey that really pulled you into spirit making, is this true?
What did you two do when you decided, “OK, we are going to really do this”?
Your building is a fixture in the middle of Main Street Purcellville, how did you end up there?
How have you seen the consumer change? Is whiskey more synonymous with experience and now seen as a more refined and extravagant drink?
We did some time visiting distilleries in Scotland, Ireland, and worked for a weekend in Chicago. But most of our experience comes from the fact that Becky, my wife and our chief distiller, is a chemical engineer. When I told her that I wanted to make whiskey, she casually remarked, ‘Oh, I can make your whiskey. But you need to make sure we can make money making whiskey!’ Smart woman!
I think it is. We actually make our own whiskey from scratch. Many “craft” distillers are buying bulk whiskey from big producers in Indiana and selling it as their own and calling it craft. We never do this. I didn’t quit a perfectly good day-job to bottle someone else’s whiskey. Every single day, we create a mash of 100% organic rye grain, ferment it, and then distill it into whiskey, aging it in our warehouse, and then bottling it on site: grain to glass in our distillery. Every single drop is pot stilled by my wife, Becky, and this ensures the highest quality spirit available.
Becky & Scott Harris
At Catoctin Creek, the dedication and passion is palpable. The knowledge and enthusiasm is authentic, just like the whiskey. In just eight years, the distillery has managed to produce spirits of the finest quality and represents the future of Virginia whiskey and where it continues heading. Creating premium American Single Malts by hand, to be shared and sipped around the world, that is the Catoctin Creek way, and they won’t settle for anything les
