Protecting the environment, creating wider social benefit and delivering robust, ethical governance.
This is Mace’s first Environment Social Governance report, highlighting the radical steps we have taken over the past twelve months to transform our operations and share best practise from across our organisation.
2020 was a year of significant change for Mace, including the development and adoption of a new business strategy.
As such, this report captures elements of both our 2022 Business Strategy, which governed our measurement and performance during much of the year, and our 2026 Business Strategy, which lays out our plans for the future.
We have outlined our approach and our ambitions for each area of ESG. Our priorities drive our objectives, in turn contributing to our ESG ambitions.
By aligning our purpose and priorities with our ESG approach, we’re able to be transparent about what we’re aiming to achieve over the next five years and how we create value across our business.
Transforming our impact
on society and planet
Evolving the way we do business to ensure that the way we operate is sustainable, ethical and robustly governed.
Our ESG strategy links to Mace’s strategic priorities, connecting every element of what we do to our purpose.
Creating shared value sits at our heart. Supporting communities and generating opportunities to deliver better outcomes for society. It’s what we do because it’s the right thing to do.
Over the last few years, we have increased our Value2Society, but there is always more that we can do and our new target of £700m by 2026 will see us add advanced value by bringing further benefits to those whom our projects touch, now and in the future.

Environment
The construction industry can’t stop climate change altogether, but it can have a significant impact on turning the tide. Shifting to renewable energy sources, reducing travel, better repurposing existing buildings, adopting low carbon alternatives and actively supporting new technologies - we all have a role to play. The sum of our efforts will be our turning point.
Armed with a game changing ambition to become a net zero carbon business in 2020, we made great strides against our sustainability targets that would ordinarily have looked like mountains to climb. Despite it being a difficult year that had the potential to derail our plans, we achieved more than ever before.
Carbon emissions
Evidence of our renewed commitments is visualised here, in Deloitte-verified data that outlines our 2020 carbon reduction efforts. We will continue to secure annual verification of our net zero position.
Social
Having a positive impact. That’s the driver that keeps us adding social value through every opportunity.
A major factor in Mace’s success, we took a new approach in 2020 to reinvigorate our approach and push ourselves to do more than ever before.
Not only have we committed to increasing our investment in our communities through outreach programmes, charitable activities and local skills and training, but we have also invested in our people through the creation of a more diverse and inclusive working environment, an environment where we put everyone’s health, safety and wellbeing first.
It’s more important than ever that we deliver social value to communities, and as a responsible and purpose-led business, we want to hold ourselves to account by measuring and reporting on the social impact we make, and by setting ourselves robust and ambitious targets.
Governance
Strong, transparent and accountable governance, together with effective risk management, capital allocation and strategic planning, is central to how Mace operates. Our approach safeguards Mace and allows us to fully understand the impact of our decisions on our stakeholders and the communities in which we work.
In 2020, we fully adopted the Wates Code of Governance for private companies. Guided by our code of ethics, we’re proud that we’re doing business in the right way: managing our finances responsibly, investing sustainably, advocating for positive industry transformation and driving innovation wherever we can.
