Arteries of the City: Water Powers It All
Underground – hidden beneath the skin of the District of Columbia – lies an impressive grid of life-sustaining vessels carrying clean water to every neighborhood, street, home and business. DC Water pumps close to 100 million gallons through this system of pipes every day.
That water Hydrates DC.

MISSION
The beauty of our water infrastructure is that 99 percent of the time you don’t have to think about it. It’s there when you turn on your faucet, to brush your teeth, take a shower, wash clothes, or just to take a drink. It’s also there when your favorite coffee shop brews a pot, when the car wash opens for the day, when construction crews mix concrete, and when the groundkeepers water the outfield grass at Nationals Park.
Water sustains human life. It also hydrates our entire economy. The things we eat and drink; the things we make; the things we do – they all require water.
So, given that, it is critical that we take care of our water system. That we make the necessary investments to ensure those pipes in the ground – along with all the pumps, valves and hydrants – can continue to do their job well into the future.
DC Water’s support of the local economy isn’t limited to delivering water. We are also playing a key role in helping restore our rivers by building a massive system of underground tunnels to capture stormwater and sewage and prevent it from overflowing into local waterways during heavy rains. Already the project is paying dividends on the Anacostia River. The water quality is improving, and it’s not so farfetched anymore to think of someday having a swimmable, fishable river again.
People are coming to the river, to live, to work, for recreation or an evening out. A long neglected natural resource is on the rebound, fueling new development, and providing great benefits and opportunities for current and future residents. It’s another way we Hydrate DC.

The Affordability of
Drinking Tap Water
This year, the average monthly water bill for District residents is $114. At first glance, that might sound like a lot.
But it’s also for a lot of water: 4,638 gallons. If you do the math, that’s about $.02 a gallon.
That includes the cost of taking the water away after you’ve used it and treating it. It also includes the cost of the Clean Rivers Project, which is helping to restore the Anacostia and Potomac rivers and Rock Creek.
$0.02 a gallon.
Now, maybe you have a preference for bottled water.
A quick check of the weekly ad for a local supermarket shows $0.99 is a pretty good price for a gallon jug of generic bottled water. Your favorite brand might cost even more, but we’ll use 99 cents for comparison’s sake:

* One gallon of bottled water carried home from the store: $0.99
* One gallon of tap water delivered right to your faucet: $0.02
What about 100 gallons? Well, that’s easy. That will run you almost $100 for bottled water, but only $2 for the same amount of tap water.
Not to mention there are plenty of times when convenience stores or other vendors will charge $2 for just 12-ounces of bottled water.
One last comparison. Remember that 4,638 gallons of water the average residential customer uses every month? Consume that much bottled water and you will be out more than $4,500!
$114 seems like a bargain, and it is.
Tap water is clearly cheaper, but it’s also safe and kind to the earth.
Unlike bottled water, tap water is strictly regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and DC Water conducts extensive water-quality testing and shares the results with you.
Producing all those disposable plastic bottles also requires a tremendous amount of energy and pumps greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. In addition, it takes water – lots of water – to produce the bottles during the manufacturing process, and only one out of every four plastic bottles is recycled. The rest wind up in landfills, or even worse, as litter on land or in our waterways.
And then there’s this fact: 50 percent of all bottled water actually comes from the tap.
It’s clear, the tap water delivered to your home – without the bottle – is the better bargain.
