Pick your nickname: Will Rogers Highway, America’s Main Street, the Mother Road—coined by John Steinbeck in The Grapes of Wrath. The 2,448-mile route established in 1926 linked the Midwest and West Coast. After shrinking and relocating in spots, the exact mileage today is debatable. But not the romance and nostalgia.

in the U.S. It’s had cameos in The Blues Brothers movie, plus Empire, Prison Break and other TV shows. You may recognize

August Hill Winery in Utica was the perfect stop for a pre-dinner wine-tasting and glass of wine on their gorgeous patio.

The first stop on our epic road trip was
Dell Rhea's in Willowbrook. Once a gas station snack, the fried chicken recipe here is more than 70 years old.

We hit the trails early at Starved Rock State Park in Utica, and then took the
trolley to visit Starved Rock Dam, where
a lock lifts barges.
HiKED IT, LIKED IT
We spent half a day in Pontiac where we took photos with the famous Walldog murals, and visited the Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum, Pontiac-Oakland Automobile Museum, and swinging bridges on the
edge of town.

Fun Fact: Fillmore, the hippie van in Cars, was inspired by Route 66 legend and artist Bob Waldmire. The free-spirited Illinois native turned a school bus into his eclectic home, dubbed the Road Yacht. Climb inside it behind the Route 66 Museum in Pontiac.
DEJA VU On route 66
Like a scene from Twin Peaks, fresh daily pie and coffee call the shots at The Palms Grill Cafe in Atlanta. A slice a la mode made the perfect road trip snack.
APPLE, CHERRY and
black raspberry, oh my!
We spent the morning touring the Lincoln Home in Springfield with the man himself! Springfield is filled with historical stops, and we learned a lot as we walked in the footsteps of the 16th U.S. president.
Oh, hey, abe!
We visited the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and Library for all things Lincoln. The interactive exhibits gave insight to all the stages of Lincoln's life and presidential career—and also provided some great Abe photo opps.

We toured the 1904 home that Frank Lloyd Wright designed for Susan Lawrence Dana in Springfield. This home was Wright's first "blank check" commission.

Pretzels the size of a small torso, cold beer and vintage cars turned into bar shelves. Route 66 Motorheads Bar, Grill and Museum in Springfield was the perfect afternoon pit stop.

We stopped by Pink Elephant Antique Mall in Livingston for a shopping and sugar fix.

which showcased gorgeous views of the Mississippi River. The SkyTour gondola opened late last year.
