Our clean energy
vision for New York
A fossil-free plan for cleanly and affordably heating homes and businesses
We have a critical responsibility to lead the clean energy transition while continuing to provide affordable and reliable options to heat homes and businesses and offer customers more clean energy choices.
To build a better energy future for all, we have announced a bold plan to fully eliminate fossils fuels from our US gas and electric systems, fight climate change, and achieve net zero for our customers and the New York communities we serve by 2050, and sooner if possible.
How we plan to get there
Just as we’re investing in renewables like wind and solar
to decarbonize the energy running through our electric network, we’re committing to decarbonizing our gas network over time with the use of renewable natural gas
and green hydrogen.
• Renewable natural gas is produced by capturing
methane produced at wastewater treatment facilities,
farms and landfills.
• Green hydrogen is created by renewable electricity
such as wind.
Today, fossil fuels used to heat homes and businesses generate nearly 39% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across New York. Reducing these emissions is one of the most important challenges we face.

Envisioning an Affordable Energy Future
Will this impact rates?
We believe a coordinated approach – one that uses a diverse set of technologies and strategies – is better able to manage the costs and feasibility risks of decarbonization than approaches that rely more heavily on single technologies or strategies, which will be significantly more expensive than our plan. We are committed to working with all stakeholders to reach our vision fairly and affordably.
Is this a cost-effective solution?
In our analysis, this hybrid approach – using RNG and green hydrogen – is more
cost-effective than a high-electrification approach to decarbonization. The issue of affordability is one of the most important factors when determining the best path
toward net zero. In our service territory today, heating with gas is the most cost-effective option for the majority of our customers. Especially for our most vulnerable customers, affordable heating is crucial.
This winter customers experienced high heating bills. Will this announcement
help mitigate the impact of next winter’s bills?
The benefits of our plan will be realized by 2030 and beyond. We're taking steps today
to help customers struggling to pay their energy bill; this future of heat announcement focuses on our clean heat vision for the long term. We have energy efficiency programs
to help customers reduce their energy use and lower bills. We also offer payment arrangements and other financial assistance programs. For more information,

Continuing our Focus on Safety and Reliability
How would gas leaks be detected?
Similar to natural gas today, an odorant would be added to renewable gas and green hydrogen to aid in the detection of a gas leak. We are confident that we will continue to provide safe and reliable service.
Are RNG and green hydrogen safe?
Yes. There are pilots and studies underway today to look at how much blending of fossil-free fuels we do in our existing system. All net zero plans must maintain the safety, security and reliability of the energy networks.
Will this long-term vision have an impact of current gas capacity constraints and requests for new service?
We are receiving a lot of requests for new gas service, so many that we are reaching
the limits of supply into the region. Currently, trends are not aligned with the climate trajectory to net zero. Together we need to think about how to shift this trajectory.
And that’s what our plan recommends: bending the demand curve downward so that
we can get onto a net zero path. We are invested in being part of the solution. It will
take more education, energy efficiency improvements, new policies and incentives,
and innovative technologies to embark on this new pathway.
