Delta Air Lines approached Sky Media with a challenge. The brand wanted to elevate its global partnership with the Masters to upmarket males across the UK. The partnership united the leading US global carrier with golf’s premier tournament to improve brand perceptions of Delta as a premium and upmarket offering in the U.S. Subsequently, a platform was needed in the UK to extend awareness, promote premium brand values and ultimately, drive trial.
Research shows the Sky Sports Golf audience are twice as likely to be high-net-worth individuals (earning £50k+) who fly business or first class vs. the UK population. This offered Delta a lucrative audience and platform to deliver its brand message.
PARTNERING WITH SKY SPORTS AROUND US MASTERS TO CREATE BRANDED CONTENT SERIES
Taking advantage of the intensity of the final nine holes in the last week of the Masters, which holds a captive audience on the edge of their seats, Sky & Delta co-created The Last Nine—nine branded mini-documentaries to be broadcast within the Masters coverage. These short films told the stories of world-class golfers—including last year’s champion, Sergio Garcia alongside golfing hero Bubba Watson—and their experiences of the “last nine” at the Masters where the “minimum requirement is perfection.” The documentaries marked the first time advertiser-funded programming has featured across Sky Sports premium golf, taking the partnership beyond a branding exercise and into the editorial.

With the surge of “winter is coming” memes and the imminent ‘Game of Thrones’ finale on everyone’s lips, Volvo wanted to be part of the conversation during this pinnacle moment in pop culture. They wanted to elevate their existing sponsorship and create a campaign, which would drive relevancy in an out-of-home space, whilst also generating leads for their Volvo XC60.
Independent brand evaluation evidence has proven that activated sponsorships deliver incremental gains across brand health metrics. Volvo and Sky Atlantic wanted to engage fans in a multi-touchpoint activation, to reinforce TV viewing and dig deeper into the cultural conversation – across editorial, social, online and earned media.
CREATING A MULTI-CITY FAN EVENT ‘7 KINGDOMS THRONE TOUR’
Three weeks prior to episode one airing, a convoy of seven branded Volvo XC60’s (akin to a moving billboard) transported the original throne across seven key UK cities, with high-footfall locations. This tour gave fans the unique opportunity to sit on the show’s hotly contested seat of power, the actual Iron Throne, and interact with the Volvo XC60. Kicking off in Dublin, home of the throne and first ever HBO filming location for the show, the convoy made guest appearances in Glasgow, Newcastle, Cardiff, Manchester, Birmingham and concluded its cross-county roadshow in the capital, at London Kings Cross, for the premiere.

Rising star of heavyweight boxing and Beats By Dr. Dre brand ambassador Anthony Joshua (AJ) took on the fight of his life against Wladimir Klitschko as future great battled current great in the biggest fight of the century. As the official fight broadcaster, Sky Sports owned the connection between boxing fans and the event, and by partnering with Sky, Beats had the canvas to launch a campaign befitting the hype.

Beats By Dr. Dre and Sky Sports partnered to share content through their joint investment in AJ. This partnership mutually benefited both brands through promotion of both the Pay Per View fight on Sky Sports and AJ’s brand association with Beats to millions of fans. Sky Sports could leverage Beats’ association with AJ through exclusive footage rights beyond the fight, and likewise, Beats’ could take advantage of Sky’s audience and platforms. Such an association would allow Beats to take the brand beyond the team bus and the locker room, into the stadium.
