International anonymous graffiti and performance artist Banksy released a new series of artwork and a video project in early 2015 highlighting a recent trip to Palestine. “A local man came up and said ‘Please – what does this mean?’ I explained I wanted to highlight the destruction in Gaza by posting photos on my website – but on the internet people only look at pictures of kittens.”

THE EMPOWERMENT PLAN

The Empowerment Plan, a Detroit-based nonprofit, employs previously homeless individuals to create coats that can transition into sleeping bags. They will make 6,500 coats this year and have made over 9,000 coats since 2011 – employing 20 formerly homeless people. “We believe in giving second chances to those who want it, and providing warmth to those who need it.”

Goldsworthy is an artist and photographer whose surreal and whimsical work consists entirely of natural materials that often melt, decay, or dissolve once his work is complete.

As of 2014, 3.5 million people lived in UNHRC refugee tents, and 1.3 million refugees are expected early this year from Syria alone. IKEA designers built a temporary housing structure that provides light via solar panels, can be easily shipped and constructed, offers more privacy and security than traditional tents, and lasts six times as long. “Putting refugee families and their needs at the heart of this project is a great example of how democratic design can be used for humanitarian value.”

In their latest Super Bowl ad, the brand proved how negatively pervasive the phrase “like a girl” is in teens and adults, and how young girls can reclaim it. Writer, director, and artist Miranda July asked celebrities, philosophers, and professors like Lena Dunham, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Lee Smolin to share 20 (mostly) unedited emails every week, completely out of context, by searching one word in their inbox and seeing what email came up first. Prompts included words like “money” and “health.” They were compiled in a weekly round up and sent to subscribers. While it revealed that many famous people write mundane emails like the rest of us, it also highlighted how our online lives can take on a life of their own.

By using digital tools to share reporter’s notes, video, and gorgeous photography, this piece, which took over 15 months to report and create, set the standard for what in-depth storytelling can and should be.

March is Transgender Awareness Month, and retailer and content marketing trailblazers Refinery29 marked the month by interviewing a dozen transgender young people across the country in a massive digital project accompanied by video interviews and a visual and data-driven piece on trans rights state-by-state. “When we asked one young man how he’d describe himself in a word, he said, ‘human.’”
