Where is the world's best whale experience?
Whales inhabit all of the world's oceans, but only one site boasts as many as 13 species or is as easily accessible as the Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park in Quebec.
Just a two-and-a-half hour drive from Quebec City (or five hours from Montreal), a whale experience from Tadoussac, les Bergeronnes and les Escoumins in Côte-Nord and Baie-Sainte-Catherine in Charlevoix makes a great add-on to your Quebec vacation.
AML Cruises' and Croisieres Essipit whale-watching tours and other tour operations launch from Tadoussac on the northern shore of the Saguenay River or Baie-Sainte-Catherine on the southern side. All of them will bring you into the marine park, where you’ll enjoy the best whale experience in the world.
Up to 13 species of whales can be spotted throughout the marine park.
Common species that can be found there include:
• Fin whale, you will hear it breathe before you see it
• St. Lawrence beluga, the canary of the sea
• Minke whale, recognizable by its curved dorsal fin
• Humpback, famous for breaching out of the water
• Harbour porpoise, the smallest of the park's whales
• Blue whale, the largest animal on the planet
Try to spot rarer species!
• North Atlantic right whale (there are only 350
in the world!)
• Northern bottlenose whale, an endangered species
with only 200 left in the world
• Killer whale or orca, an instantly recognizable black
and white whale
