READERS'CHOICE
IS FULL OF FAMILY FUN
Since 1993, the Calgary Herald has been asking readers to vote for their favourites in a wide range of categories.
Readers are invited to go to a special website and fill out an online form with their choices.
The results of this survey are tabulated, and the names of the businesses that top each category's vote totals are published in the special Readers' Choice section you are now reading.
Some of the winning businesses that choose to advertise are also featured with a story in this special feature.
A primary goal of the Readers' Choice polling process is fairness — i.e. one person, one vote.
Attempts at submitting multiple forms are restricted by the use of a combination of user email addresses, IP addresses and other forms of electronic tracking.
In addition, all votes are reviewed by at least two individuals to ensure accuracy.
Once the polling is complete, the results are tabulated and a list of the year's winners is compiled.
We consider the Readers' Choice Awards one of the year's most important and significant projects, and we hope our advertisers and readers do, too.

Kensington Art Supply and Instruction is a treasure trove of professional-level supplies, most appropriate for older children familiar with painting and drawing techniques. For younger kids, any of Calgary’s Michaels stores will have a vast selection of crafts, art supplies and sewing materials.

Snowy weather and pandemic protocols don’t mean Calgary families can’t have fun.
Perhaps more than ever, parents are searching for fun and meaningful ways to connect with their children.
Our Readers’ Choice voters suggested many places that can help you cut down screen time and spend some quality time together as a family.
These ideas are designed to help you to enjoy each other’s company and build family memories.
One of the best ways to get children interested in healthy eating is to involve them in shopping for and cooking their own food. Calgary Co-op is the place to go for all your grocery basics. Kids may also enjoy going to the Calgary Farmers’ Market or seeing the butchers cutting and wrapping steaks at Masters Meats. Older children might appreciate gourmet cheese selections from Springbank Cheese or irresistible cheese buns from Glamorgan Bakery. Parents should check out Willow Park Wines & Spirits for its fantastic selection of bottles.
The city is full of incredible restaurants representing just about every type of cuisine, while also offering properly distanced dining. Many are also doing takeout orders. The fried chicken combos from Chicken on the Way or massive smoked meat platters from Big T’s BBQ are perfect for a family-style meal. For brunch, spots like Diner Deluxe and OEB have plenty of kid-friendly meals, and Jerusalem Shawarma or Kinjo Sushi are perfect for a casual lunch or dinner. Shops like Jelly Modern Doughnuts and Village Ice Cream are perfect for your sweet tooth.
Sometimes family time means cosying up on the couch to relax with a good book. Readers will want to browse the selection at Pages on Kensington, one of Calgary’s best independent bookstores. Not only does the shop have an eclectic selection of books, but the knowledgeable staff can help customers find new favourites. For a more visual reading experience, Another Dimension Comics features rack upon rack of cool comic books and graphic novels. Music-loving families should take a trip to Recordland in Inglewood to see its floor-to-ceiling shelves full of every imaginable vinyl record, CD and cassette.

Calgary has no shortage of stylish watering holes and Proof is no exception. Small plates, carefully crafted drinks and old-fashioned service await, as does a menu of libations inspired by literary classics such as the Great Gatsby and Anna Karenina. Creative cocktails and Vietmodern cuisine are also on the menu at Raw Bar, located in Hotel Arts. But if a glass of wine is more your style, never fret; WineBar Kensington offers a selection of more than 100 bottles from every corner of the globe, plus an assortment of made-from-scratch tapas-style sharing plates.
There are plenty of ways for active families to enjoy outdoor activities. The whole gang can get their ski or snowboard gear at Ski Cellar Snowboard, along with all the winter gear needed to keep warm at a facility such as Banff Sunshine Village. Families who aren’t quite as sporty can get their outdoor fun fix at the Calgary Zoo, which is currently offering timed tickets to ensure guest safety. And while Calaway Park is closed for the season, it offers some of its best deals on season passes over the Christmas holidays.

Patrons flock safely to staycation getaway spot
During the strange time we’re in, Grey Eagle Casino has soared above the rest to provide experiences that make patrons forget reality for awhile, and give them a happy place to be — safely.
A first-time Gold winner in the Readers’ Choice Casino category, Grey Eagle stands out for having the highest number of machines — slots and VLTs — in the city, tallying 1,000, along with table games and bingo.
It’s a real destination spot, where people can enjoy five cafes and restaurants, and a hotel resort with top-notch amenities. People have used the casino and resort as a staycation getaway spot over the course of the pandemic.
The casino’s COVID-19 safety measures are outstanding.
“We have thermal camera systems that take temperatures at every entrance, mandatory masking for staff, and we strongly encourage patrons to mask in transit,” says Tammy Whitney, Grey Eagle’s resort executive.
In addition, each machine is nestled in its own Plexiglas barrier.
Grey Eagle has even gotten creative with its event centre post-lockdown, and built private cabanas that hold six people each, so patrons can enjoy music and other events in their own safe pods, each with its own personal server.
“I think a lot of people are missing connecting with people, and this is a way to do that in a safe fashion,” Whitney says.
The staff at Grey Eagle is overjoyed about being a Gold winner.
“It’s such an exciting win, and it demonstrates the feedback we do receive from customers,” Whitney says.

COMPANY DOES JOBS BIG AND SMALL
Alberta Hardwood Flooring
If you have ever been in the new Central Library or Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, then you would have seen the workmanship of Alberta Hardwood Flooring.
The company has done many high-profile installations, but also offers its expert service and selection to Calgary homeowners.
In fact, Alberta Hardwood Flooring is the Gold winner in the category of Hardwood Flooring in the 2020-21 Calgary Readers’ Choice Awards.
“We’re very proud of those two jobs,” says Ryan Dyck, Alberta Hardwood Flooring operations manager. “They went really well, and they’re spectacular.”
Dyck says a big part of the company’s success has been its reputation for honesty. With the boom in home improvements, some shady contractors without the proper licence, have been taking deposits and
then disappearing with the money, he says.
Alberta Hardwood Flooring has the proper Alberta licence in place, WCB coverage, business insurance and a Certificate of Recognition for safety.
“We’ve put a lot of pieces in place to make us attractive to new home builders and also homeowners — so they know they’re dealing with a company that’s above board and is going to look after them,” says Dyck.
He says Alberta Hardwood Flooring is also very selective with the suppliers it partners with and the products it carries.
And while the company name says “hardwood,” the business has expanded to include floor coverings such as tile, carpet and vinyl plank. Plus, it also offers window coverings.
“We’re more than just hardwood now,” says Dyck.

CALGARIANS PUT THEIR TRUST IN ESTABLISHED COMPANY
Calgary Elite Roofing
In an industry known for having companies come and go, Calgary Elite Roofing has created a long list of satisfied customers since 2006, while setting down strong roots in the Calgary business community.
That effort has paid off, with honours such as being named a Business ofthe Year by the Calgary Chamber of Commerce (CCC) in 2016 and being named a Winner in the 2020-21 Readers’ Choice Awards.
“We’re proud and humble to receive this recognition,” says Calgary Elite Roofing president Greg Garcia. “At the end of the day, we always try to do the right things for our customers."
Garcia, who now volunteers on the CCC’s financial committee, says after every major storm, a wave of instant roofing companies spring up, then disappear once the backlog of work is over.
Calgary Elite Roofing customers know the company will be there not just to complete roof repairs or roof replacement, but also later on to back up the quality of its work, he says.
Whether someone needs adjustments to their roof to accommodate something like a new bathroom fan, or a new roof due to one of Calgary’s famous hailstorms, Calgary Elite Roofing can look after it.
With so many different ways to market their services these days, from traditional media to social media, referrals from satisfied customers continue to be a big part of their success, Garcia says.
“The best marketing tool you can have is word of mouth, especially in our industry, because trust is a big factor for most customers,” he says.

EVERY SEAT IS A GOOD SEAT IN SPORTS BAR
The Canadian Brewhouse
The friendly crew at The Canadian Brewhouse like to say ‘Our House is Your House’ … except with more TVs.
Like, a LOT more TVs.
Whether it’s the NHL, NFL, English soccer, the UFC or any other sport you can imagine, it’ll be on one of each location’s 50-plus screens.
That’s no secret to Calgarians, as The Canadian Brewhouse won Gold in the 2020-21 Readers’ Choice Awards in the Sports Bar category.
The Canadian Brewhouse Calgary regional manager Rob Garraway says every seat is the best seat in the house.
“We literally go from seat to seat to make sure people have a view of multiple TVs,” Garraway says. “So, you can watch 10 different screens at once.
“But we really try to create an experience for every customer every time they come in. We want to get to know our guests on a first-name basis and hopefully they’ll come back and see us again."
But it’s not just sports fans enjoying themselves at The Canadian Brewhouse.
“Sometimes we’ll laugh because we’ll see everything from the 18th birthday to grandma and grandpa having their prime-rib dinner, to the sports teams to bachelorettes,” Garraway says. “We appeal to everyone from 18 to 80.”
And soon, there will be more to love.
There are currently three locations in Calgary among the 35 in Western Canada and two more are on the way in University District and Legacy Township. There are also locations in Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks and Chestermere.

DOWNTOWN DAYCARE ‘A HOME AWAY FROM HOME’
Children’s Place Daycare
For more than 25 years, the dynamic duo of Children’s Place Daycare owner Khana Barmazel and director Nicki Kaur have built a team of loving, enthusiastic and reliable caregivers. They work hard to provide “a home away from home” for children aged newborn to six years old.
This year, the daycare is being recognized as a proud Winner in the Daycare Provider category in the Readers’ Choice Awards. The daycare’s mission is to provide children with a high-quality, warm and nourishing environment, where they learn through play. The children in the daycare are respected and accepted unconditionally, regardless of family dynamics, ethnic background or origin, culture, socio-economic status, or physical and mental challenges.
The daycare offers Preschool and French language programs, which are included in the fees. It also prides itself on providing three
home-cooked meals a day, which is one of many reasons it is a daycare of choice for parents, many of whom work downtown or live nearby and find the 2nd Ave. S.W. location very convenient.
The daycare accommodates parents’ schedules, offering full-time attendance, part-time (two, three or four days a week or half-days) and drop-ins.
The daycare has families coming back with their second and third child, as well as new families recommended by the ones already enrolled. Staff members have had people stop them on the street to say, “I went to your daycare and now I’m attending university!”
Children’s Place Daycare is open from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. For more information, visit childrensplacedaycarecalgary.ca or call 403-262-4433.

Helping students thrive
Foothills Academy
Since 1979, Foothills Academy has filled a need in educational support for children with learning disabilities.
This work has been recognized by readers of the Calgary Herald and Calgary Sun, who helped vote Foothills Academy a Winner in the Readers’ Choice Awards category for Charter/Private Schools.
“Every student with a learning disability has exceptional potential and, with the right support and guidance, can be exceptional in school, post-secondary and the workplace,” says Simon Williams, executive co-director of the school, which serves some 300 students from grades 3 to 12.
"Kids and families come here because they need extra support. And we don’t turn families away because of their financial circumstances. We do a lot of fundraising to make sure we have a strong bursary program.”
Being a private school, Foothills has the flexibility to develop programming that offers high-quality education for
children with learning disabilities who might also have other challenges such as ADHD and anxiety.
Foothills responded to COVID-19 by transferring to online learning, but, with safety protocols and already-modest class sizes, it is again welcoming students who are embracing in-person learning. “There was such enthusiasm by the kids to come back,” Williams says.
“We are honoured with the Readers’ Choice recognition of all the efforts of Foothills administration, staff, volunteers and stakeholders.
“We’re incredibly proud of the great success and achievements of all our students. We typically have close to 100 per cent graduate with the vast majority going on to post-secondary. We are filling a really important need and changing the trajectory of the lives of so many kids and families.”

Calgary auction house has family atmosphere
Graham Auctions
After 25 years, Graham Auctions continues to be a leader in Western Canadian auctions — and marked its silver anniversary by taking Gold in the 2020-21 Readers’ Choice Awards Auction House category.
Established by Larry Graham and his wife, Linda, in August 1995, this Calgary business started out focusing on vehicles, heavy equipment, tools and general consignment. It’s since grown to cover a diverse range of goods, from electronics and furniture, to collectibles and retail wares, along with a public car auction every Saturday.
“It’s a big, close family here, and that includes our regular customers. Many of them have been coming in since 1995,” says Larry Graham. “People who come here for the first time … it opens their eyes a bit. They see such a welcoming, happy place.”
Graham Auctions has embraced online bidding, which is just the next step in the evolution of an industry that Graham himself has been involved in since he worked on his first auction at the age of 14.
Graham Auctions’ customers “are folks looking for a deal,” says Larry. “They see the wide variety, and we see young families and people of all ages, and we also have store owners buying in bulk.”
To Calgary Herald and Sun readers who voted for them, Graham says, “I’d like to say thank you. We feel grateful and we feel blessed and lucky to have the support.”

Turning stellar customer service into a fine art
Kensington Art Supply
Kensington Art Supply helps all creative people, from budding artists to those with plenty of experience.
Gold winner in the Readers’ Choice Art Supply Store category, Kensington Art Supply is Calgary’s largest independent art supply store, with more than 7,000 square feet of space in southeast Calgary.
“We are absolutely thrilled that Calgary readers have chosen us as their favourite,” says KAS president Annette Wichmann.
KAS is located near IKEA in Deerfoot Meadows, at 120, 6999 - 11 Street S.E. — easily accessible with plenty of parking. Established in the mid-1970s, Kensington Art Supply has been in its current location for about seven years. While “we are not in Kensington anymore,” Wichmann says, the name remains the same.
“We kept the trendy atmosphere with attentive customer service, and greatly expanded the range of products. “Because our staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, people often visit to ask questions and leave feeling inspired. We find creative solutions and point them in the right direction.”
In addition to the large art store, KAS has two spacious studios offering weekend workshops and weekday art classes. Physical distancing measures are in place and workspaces are disinfected after each session to ensure everyone’s safety.
KAS has an enormous range of art supplies including oils, acrylics, watercolours, drawing, sculpting and airbrush materials, paper, canvasses, brushes, pen and ink, as well as artsy gifts and art supplies for children. They are constantly adding new products and are currently expanding their fountain pen area.

Helping students sharpen their math skills
MathPro Learning Centre
For the founders of MathPro Learning Centre, helping students succeed in the often-challenging world of mathematics has been a labour of love.
Grace Wong launched the service with her husband, David Chan, in 2004.
“The main reason we started MathPro was that both of us really love lifelong learning,” she says. “We had both been youth leaders since we were kids — so it was like our calling.”
Readers of the Calgary Herald and Sun must appreciate their efforts, as MathPro was a Winner in this year’s Readers’ Choice Awards in the category of Afterschool Tutorial Service.
MathPro works with students from Grade 3 age to early university on developing their analytical and application skills in math and sciences, and it has grown to four locations in Calgary.
One of MathPro’s strengths is its one-on-one tutoring, Wong says.
“Students who come to us for help must be already experiencing some challenges when taught in a bigger setting,” she says, adding online instruction is also available, though in-person sessions have resumed with COVID-19 safety protocols.
During the pandemic, MathPro has also started offering all Alberta students free access to online machine-graded targeted exercises and learning materials through its CONNECT service.
“This is our little gift back to the community,” Wong says.
To readers who voted for MathPro, Wong says: “On behalf of our entire team, we’re truly gracious for the nomination and we are here to serve. We believe young people are the pillars of our society’s future.”

Taking care of all your yard maintenance needs
NAIAD Irrigation Systems
Everyone loves a great-looking yard, and NAIAD Irrigation Systems is here to help. The company was the Gold winner in the Readers’ Choice Awards category for Landscaping/Lawn Care Services.
NAIAD Irrigation Systems owner Myles Sidorak says they are a service-focused company that can look after all a homeowner’s irrigation system and lawn maintenance needs.
A lot of the company’s success is due to its great staff —“Props to them,” Sidorak says. NAIAD also invested in technology to ensure great communication with customers at all stages of the work process. Its irrigation services include spring activation, where a crew comes out to turn on and test the irrigation system and let a customer know of any deficiencies that need fixing, such as broken sprinkler heads, Sidorak says.
Staff can also provide and install the latest commercial-grade irrigation devices, such as Wi-Fi timers or rain sensors — or a customer can buy those online from NAIAD and do it themself.
From spring to fall, NAIAD offers complete lawn and yard services such as spring cleanup and lawn dethatching, grass cutting, aeration, and shrub and flower bed maintenance — to keep everything looking great, Sidorak says.
In autumn, NAIAD offers irrigation system blowout and winterizing services, and during winter provides shovelling services. New for 2021, NAIAD will have membership plans so that people don’t have to worry about calling every year to schedule annual services, and will know work will be completed at the appropriate time, Sidorak says.

Double Winner
Sunvalley Kids Montessori
Sunvalley Kids Montessori is a hit with youngsters, parents and Calgary Herald and Sun readers, who have voted the school a 2020-21 Readers’ Choice Winner in two categories — Daycare Provider and Preschool.
Sunvalley Kids Montessori is incredibly pleased and grateful to parents and readers to be chosen as a Readers’ Choice Winner in the above two categories.
Established in 2014, Sunvalley Kids Montessori provides daycare and preschool services at three campuses in Calgary. The campuses follow Montessori, Reggio Emilia and play-based learning philosophies which are later merged with Emergent Framework for Preschool and Kindergartners.
The physical development of the children is taken care of through an inhouse prepared healthy menu.
The school caters to children from newborns to age six at its SW Mission campus and to children from 12 months to six years at its SE locations in Queensland and Acadia. Sunvalley Kids Montessori strongly believes in the “whole child” approach where each child is healthy, safe, engaged, supported and challenged.
What makes Sunvalley different?
“Children enrolled at campuses become part of the very close-knit Sunvalley family. The children love their teachers and parents’ trust and comfort level with their staff is extremely high,” says Natalie, the owner of Sunvalley.
“Sunvalley aims to support children’s learning and overall sense of well-being with positive, respectful and reciprocal relationships, combined with a strong foundation for their continued development. Winning the Readers’ Choice Award in this most difficult time assures us that we are doing something unique and contributing to our community in a positive manner,” says Natalie.

READERS'CHOICE
IS FULL OF FAMILY FUN

“We’re particularly proud of our efficiency of layout,” says Ernest Hon, director of sales and marketing for Hon Developments, the developer behind the Guardian.
“The open floor plan means that you get touse your home in a number of ways depending on how you lay out yourfurniture.”
The other star of the Guardian’s interiors are the floor-to-ceiling windows, offering unparalleled views of the city and the mountains,
while also maximizing the use of natural light. Residents can relax on their ample balconies with the view unfolding around them.
“The view is really a highlight, especially from the higher floors,”Hon says. “At nighttime you can seeall the streets lit up and the cars moving in the distance.”
All Guardian homeowners have access to all of the buildings’ amenities, including the1,350-square-foot social club, state-of-the-art Lions gym, yoga studio, communal workshop, and a comfortable garden terrace spanning the seventh floor rooftop patio that connects the two towers. Other downtown perks lie just outside of the Guardian’s doors, including the Saddledome and Stampede Grounds.

One of the most impressive pair of towers in Calgary’s ever evolving skyline, the Guardian has won ample praise for its sleek and modern architectural design.
The 44-storey twin spires of glass and steel are the tallest residential towers in Calgary, but inside, the suites are just as impressive as what the public sees from the outside. Each unit boasts an ingenious floorplan — no space is wasted, making every home comfortable and inviting for entertaining.
