While viral information can be a great way to inspire and motivate, it can also limit us in our discoveries. This content can blind us with likes, shares, and comments, obstructing our view of gems that may be just as intriguing, if not more. The viral reputation of All’Antico Vinao may have brought the restaurant to fame, but do not be dissuaded from delving deeper into Florence’s rife food scene.
If you are inspired to try one of these famous schiacciata sandwiches, two locally raved-about options to try are Il Girone del Ghiotti and Pino’s Sandwiches. While they may not have the same viral esteem or number of outposts as All’Antico Vinaio, they still boast the freshest of ingredients and the most succulent of flavors. If you are feeling truly curious, why not try all three and compare for yourself?

Schiacciata, often confused with focaccia, is a thin, Tuscan flatbread, simple in ingredients, versatile in use, and pleasing in flavor. Known for a crispy exterior and soft, chewy texture, its distinct composition makes it the ideal foundation for the ultimate sandwich. It is typically adorned with layers of decadent fillings, anywhere from creamy cheeses and salty cured meats to grilled vegetables and peppery greens. For those with broader palates, you can even experiment with adding truffle or hot honey. The flatbread flawlessly envelops its accoutrements without the soggy mess a sandwich often presents. Due to its relatively undemanding preparation, schiacciata was originally created as a staple nourishment among the working class. Today, the popular sandwich is anything but.
The Perfect Sandwich
Is Florence's viral sandwich worth the hype?
There is a Florentine sandwich that has taken the internet by storm. All’Antico Vinaio, one of Florence’s many suppliers of the beloved Schiacciata sandwich, successfully caught the eye of travelers and gastronomes and has now found a loving home on the social media feeds of people all over the world.
This viral phenomenon has led to a booming influx of hungry customers and a rapid expansion of outposts unfurling throughout Italy and the United States.

Escape the Loop’s hustle and bustle and pick up the Lakefront Trail aboard a Divvy rental bicycle. The bike path hugs Lake Michigan’s shoreline for 18 traffic-free miles and is a great way to get around, but if you’re after a destination, Lincoln Park is worth a visit. The Windy City’s largest park is home to a free zoo, where you can watch the animals against the backdrop of the city’s skyscraper-filled skyline. If you prefer your nature out in the wild, rejoin the Lakefront Trail and continue north to the dunes and bird sanctuary of Montrose Beach.

AMSTERDAM
The Dutch capital is renowned worldwide for its bike-friendly status, so grab a set of wheels and join the throng of locals. Stretch your legs on a ride to the Vondelpark – a 116-acre green space in the southwest of the city that’s a stone’s throw from Museumplein. Hunt down the park’s 69 sculptures – including one by Pablo Picasso – from your saddle, and stop to take in a free show at the open-air theater.
