For parents
Try to model healthy ways of handling anxiety. Let them see you manage it calmly, tolerate it and feel good about getting through it.
POINTER no. 5
Think things through with the child. For some, having a plan can reduce the uncertainty in a healthy, effective way.
pointer no. 4
Encourage your child to talk about their feelings with open-ended questions that respect their feelings without empowering their fears.
POINTER no. 3
Express positive — but realistic — expectations that give them confidence you’re not going to ask them to do something they can’t handle.
POINTER no. 2
Instead of trying to remove stressors that trigger it, help them learn to tolerate their anxiety and function as well as they can.
Pointer no. 1
When children are chronically anxious, even well-meaning parents can fall into a negative cycle and, not wanting a child to suffer, actually aggravate the child’s anxiety.

Anxiety manifests in a surprising variety of ways in part because it is based on a physiological response to a threat in the environment that maximizes the body’s ability to either face danger or escape danger.
Anxiety
Children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) find it unusually difficult to concentrate on tasks, pay attention, sit still and control impulsive behavior.
ADHD
Learning and development disorders are conditions that interfere with a child’s ability to process information and acquire skills in language, speech, reading and/or mathematics.
Learning Disorders
Children who have trouble processing sensory information can have extreme and confusing behavior when their senses are overwhelmed.
Sensory Processing Problems
All kids have their ups and downs, but if yours is unusually irritable, sad or withdrawn for a prolonged period of time they may be showing signs of depression.
Depression
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder marked by two unusual kinds of behaviors: deficits in communication and social interaction, and restricted or repetitive behaviors.
Autism
We tend to think of trauma as the result of one event but many children experience trauma through ongoing exposure to abuse, neglect, homelessness, domestic violence or violence in their communities.
