A Message
from our President &
CEO
Dear friends,
2021 was a landmark anniversary for Scholarship America—we celebrated what would have been the 100th birthday of our founder, Dr. Irving Fradkin, and the ongoing impact of his life and legacy.
I had the good fortune to work with Dr. Fradkin, who remained a dedicated part of our organization his entire life. Well into his 90s, he would pick up his phone in Fall River, Massachusetts, and call me with a news story, a piece of advice or a bit of inspiration from our hometown.
It was Dr. Fradkin’s vision that started Scholarship America—and, since our founding in 1958, it’s been volunteers, donors, partners and supporters like you who have turned that vision into the nation’s largest nonprofit scholarship provider. I can’t thank you enough for all you do to help students, and I hope this report makes it clear just how impactful your support continues to be.
As for me, 2021 was also a milestone year, as I officially announced my retirement from Scholarship America. As the year, and my time at the helm of this organization, comes to a close, I believe we are poised for a future that allows us to do great things. Though I’m officially bidding farewell, I’m excited to join you as a supporter, and to watch as Dr. Fradkin’s legacy impacts the next generation of students.

Like so much in the spring of 2020, our annual Dreams to Success celebration required rapid rethinking in the face of the COVID-19 outbreak. Adjusting to the new pandemic reality, we pivoted in a few short weeks from an in-person dinner to a virtual Day of Giving hosted on our Facebook page.
In addition to celebrating our Dream Award Scholars, we honored AbbVie and Herman Miller Cares for their important and impactful scholarship programs, and presented Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole with the Scholarship America Lifetime Achievement Award. And, crucially, we raised a record-breaking $850,000 on behalf of the annual Dreams to Success Dinner and the Dream Award Scholarship Program.

“Having the support of the Scholarship America Dream Award changes everything. It is peace of mind that I cannot only afford my last year of college but that I will not have to worry about loans afterward. I can focus on excelling in my courses, meeting my scholarship commitments, gaining research experience, and creating a compelling application for graduate school."
“The scholarship also assures that despite all that is going on in the world, I will not have to deal with the same uncertainty as so many right now. It is a lifeline and I feel so blessed.”
Rosalina didn’t always feel that way. As a child, she faced constant uncertainty and instability. Her parents, neither of whom had finished high school, dealt with drug addiction, domestic violence and poverty, and Rosalina entered foster care for the first time when she was only three years old. By the time she aged out of foster care at 19, she had gone through 15 school changes and 23 different homes.
The experience affected her education and self-esteem -- but it also taught her the persistence and resilience she would come to rely on as she made her way through higher education, worked to support others and even testified before Congress.

“It’s always never over.”
Breece Phipps lives by this statement. The University of Southern California (USC) astronautical engineering major has it on his wall as a daily reminder that anything is possible. Breece's youthful struggles with addiction led to a spell in prison -- but today he is grateful to be alive, sober, helping others and (literally) shooting for the stars, in tribute to his family.
“My grandfather worked for Aerojet Rocketdyne in Sacramento. Specifically, he helped assemble the Rocketdyne F-1 engines for NASA’s Saturn V rocket. I vividly remember the day he told me how that engine facilitated the first trip to the moon,” he recalled. “The pride and passion emanating from his voice sparked a desire deep inside of me and opened my eyes to the value of courage and ambition when trying to reach the previously unreachable.
“My vision is to be part of a team that could help create new advancements in getting the first humans to Mars. NASA has never had an ex-felon as an astronaut. That inspires me.”

Nura Ibrahim
University of North Texas // Major: International Studies
Nura Ibrahim is the oldest of five children, a proud first-generation college student and a Scholarship America Dream Award Scholar, but her journey to get there was filled with terror, poverty, and violence.
Escalating civil war in her home country of Somalia left her without hope – and when militants broke into the family’s home, killing her grandmother during her evening prayers, 11-year-old Nura fled Mogadishu with her parents and siblings.
Since they had no car, the family walked several days to get to the border and cross into Ethiopia, hoping to reach the safety of a refugee camp her father had only heard about from family and friends.
“My family fled leaving everything,” she said. “We had no food and stopped for water and rest to survive. We had no weapons to protect ourselves.” They survived encounters with snakes, threw rocks to chase off hyenas, and found help from some nomad families along the way who were able to guide them toward their destination.

David Cazares
University of North Georgia // Major: Biology
“As a young boy, I dreamt of helping my family overcome poverty, and becoming a leader in my community, a leader who would effect change. Maybe I watched too many superhero movies, but I grew up certain it was my responsibility to save the world. Regardless of how much it costs or however long it takes, I will become a doctor.”
Despite growing up with financial struggles, David says “as an undocumented immigrant I didn’t feel too held back until high school.” That’s when the stark realities of his educational future became clear. His home state, Georgia, banned undocumented immigrants from attending public colleges, and he discovered DACA students don’t qualify for government aid or FAFSA.
Inspired by his goal of becoming a doctor, David didn’t give up, but when he enrolled in college it was a struggle. “I literally paid tuition using quarters and other spare change.”
To help relieve some of the financial stress, he searched for scholarships that were open to undocumented immigrants and found Scholarship America’s Dream Award. In May of 2020, he was named a Dream Award Scholar.

“The opportunity to meet the other scholarship recipients and hear their stories [at Scholarship America’s Dreams to Success Celebration] was greatly appreciated. I learned that every student’s story is unique and it helped me feel confident in reaching for my goals and believe in myself. I feel connected with the other recipients.”
“Unlike many programs, Scholarship America works with scholarship recipients until you graduate. The event was a life-changing experience and it was great to be able to speak with donors and staff who support the program. The staff showed me their love for their job and that is what I want to experience in my future job and know I can positively affect other people.
I asked how I can help the organization and was connected with the chairs of North Dakota Dollars for Scholars. They in turn invited me to be a judge for the chapter’s competition for high school students vying for scholarships.”
Since 1973, the Chick-fil-A Remarkable Futures Scholarship has helped 53,000 team members, through a total investment of $75 million in scholarships. In 2019 alone, Chick-fil-A awarded $15.34 million in scholarships to more than 6,000 team members. Chick-fil-A’s initiative is based on founder S. Truett Cathy’s strong belief in empowering young people to achieve their dreams. In a 2018 survey, 60 percent of recipients stated this scholarship made it possible for them to attend college, with 20 percent being first-generation college students.
The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation provides an achievement-based scholarship awarded to graduating high school seniors. Since 1986, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation has supported over 1,400 college students each year with annual scholarships totaling $3.55 million. Students are recognized for their capacity to lead and serve, as well as their commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities. With the 30th class in 2018, the Foundation has provided over 6,000 Coca-Cola Scholars with more than $66 million in educational support.
Detroit Regional Dollars for Scholars (DRDFS) provides students with the knowledge, resources, and experiences to help get them to the next level. The organization is highly engaged in student participants’ lives for three years leading up to high school graduation to ensure dollars invested have the greatest possible impact. Programming includes: SAT test preparation, etiquette training, Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completion workshops, campus visits, and other support. The difference is remarkable: statewide, 18 percent of Michigan college students will graduate with a degree in six years, compared to 68 percent of DRDFS students.
Making Success Possible
Everything Scholarship America does for students happens because of our amazing supporters, who stepped up in 2020 in the face of the pandemic.
- More than 1,300 individual donors supported Scholarship America, with an average gift over $730.
- We kicked off our first Corporate Giving program, which has resulted in over $500,000 in new revenue.
- We raised over $72,000 on Giving Tuesday -- our most successful Giving Tuesday to date.
- The Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund (FoF) continued to serve families who lost loved ones on 9/11, awarding $7.5 million to 510 students; to date, FoF has awarded $178.3 million to 3,878 students.
As students, families and the world of education work to recover from COVID-19, your support matters more than ever. We thank you for everything you do on behalf of students!
Organize for results and operate
with excellence and efficiency
Just as students found themselves displaced by the pandemic and pivoting to a new remote, virtual setup, so too did Scholarship America’s team members. And just as we did after the 1998 St. Peter tornado and the attacks of 9/11, we will remember March 2020 as a time we did something extraordinary for our community, students, partners and each other.
The shift to remote work starting March 9 as a result of the pandemic impacted our whole staff, including 145 Operations team members used to fully working in the office – and during the highest peak month across all sub-departments. 100 team members worked only from desktop computers—and some never used computers at all.
Worse, COVID-19 was still new and we knew few details, including how it would affect our families and schools.
Nevertheless, within three weeks, we had shifted to 100% of staff working at home. Everyone who needed them had laptops and online access, started communicating with virtual meeting software and applying best practices for teamwork, productivity, problem-solving and communication.
For full audited financial statements from 2020, see here.
Build an exceptional student experience and increase program value for all constituents
A vital multi-year effort across our organization was the retirement of our legacy database and scholarship application system and the launch of our new Cornerstone application software—and, on December 11, 2020, in spite of pandemic-related delas, we officially completed the migration of our scholarship programs to the new system and retired the legacy servers.
What’s more, we did so while also accepting and evaluating more than 200,000 applications for over 1,300 scholarship and tuition assistance programs and 450 Dollars for Scholars community affiliates, and distributing over $250 million to 100,000 students.
Other student-experience achievements included:
- Managing close to 11,000 transactions with Tuition Assistance students, leveraging the EdFlo platform after launching it at the end of 2019.
- Developing a new interactive Collegiate Partners Directory, to increase value for participating institutions and usability for students.
- Expanding and creating emergency grant programs for Dream Award Scholars, Dollars for Scholars affiliates and our partners at Achieve Atlanta.
Promote the impact of private scholarships (and be the voice of the student)
As an organization, we supported vital student aid policy initiatives including:
- Sustained campaign calling on Congress to stop taxing student scholarships, kicked off via joint press conference with NSPA
- California Assemblyman David Chiu’s successful Bill to Provide Emergency Financial Aid, which clears the way for California community colleges to access an expanded pool of funds for emergency aid
- The Emergency Grant provision of the College Affordability Act in the House Education and Labor Committee

Scholarship America works to meet students where they are, highlighting our scholarships to nearly 300,000 social media followers and a million website visitors each year—and our Scholarship America Hub’s built-in scholarship matching means applicants have a one-stop resource to learn about more programs they’re eligible for.
Goal #1
Promote the impact of private scholarships (and be the voice of the student)
Goal #2
Build an exceptional student experience and increase program value for all constituents
Goal #3
Organize for results and operate with excellence and efficiency
Thanks to our partners, our philanthropic supporters, our volunteers and our team members, below are a few key achievements made in each of these areas in 2020.
Our development team raised $1.184 million in 2019 for the Dream Award -- nearly three times our goal.
Cross-functional fundraising efforts on Giving Tuesday raised over $65,000, representing a 205% increase over 2018; the day’s average gift was $535.
We completed the beta test of the Scholarship America Hub, our new technology platform for scholarship management. This successful test brings us one step closer to migrating all programs to this new, more robust and student-focused technology solution.
In addition, Scholarship America partnered with EdFlo, a leading provider of tuition management software, to overhaul the technology powering our tuition assistance programs. By leveraging this new platform, we are able to more closely integrate our TA services with employee-facing payroll systems, giving them an easier process to obtain this valuable benefit.
The Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund continued to serve financially needy families who lost loved ones on 9/11, hosting student and family seminars throughout the tristate area and in Washington, DC and awarding over $12 million in needs-based scholarships to support more than 700 students during the 2018-19 academic year.

We are building on our legacy of impactful student success solutions.
A Partnership for Remarkable Futures
Scholarship America’s partnership with Chick-fil-A has helped tens of thousands of students pursue their higher education goals—and we hit a milestone this year, officially topping the $100 million mark since Chick-fil-A’s scholarship program was established in 1973.
Like Scholarship America’s founder, Dr. Irving Fradkin, Chick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy believed in helping those in his community attend college. Around the same time Dr. Fradkin was drumming up support in Fall River, Cathy set out a mayonnaise jar on his restaurant’s front counter to collect donations for cook Eddie White’s college fund.
From these humble origins, both dreams took off. In 2021, Scholarship America partnered with Chick-fil-A to award $19 million to nearly 7,500 Team Members—including the $25,000 True Inspiration Scholars featured in the video.
The program also brought Scholarship America’s team together. Despite working remotely due to COVID protocols, we created a safe and socially distanced space where dozens of our team members could mask up, join together and package more than 7,000 award mailers—a worthwhile effort to award an amazing group of scholars.

20 Years of Support
Since 2001 the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund has awarded $183.8 million to nearly 3,800 students who lost loved ones on 9/11 and in the rescue and cleanup efforts.
As the world marked the 20th anniversary of the devastating 9/11 terrorist attacks, we launched the “3,000 Reasons to Give” campaign, in support of the 3,000 young people who still need Fund support. The campaign kicked off with pledges of support from Medal Dash, Benjamin Moore, the World Journal and MTV, and a commitment from the Ralph Lauren Corporate Fund—a supporter of Families of Freedom since the beginning.

“The days, months and years following September 11th have been a reminder of how compassionate Americans can be towards one another. When it comes to selecting scholarship recipients, it’s not always about GPAs and SATs. Award criteria are as unique as each partner, chapter and program—and rising inequity in the wake of the pandemic has led more and more providers to focus on equitable solutions.
That’s meant new partnerships like the Navisite Next STEMinist Scholarship, designed to help close the gender gap in tech and encourage young women to go after their dreams in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). Created by Navisite, a digital
transformation partner for growing and established global brands, the program provides $10,000 scholarships to eligible female candidates pursuing degrees in STEM. It’s just one of hundreds of programs working toward greater equity and inclusion in all kinds of career fields.
It all leads to supporting students: since 1958, 2.9 million students.
They’ve received $4.9 billion from Scholarship America and our partners.
And with your support, we’re just getting started.

Carrying Dr. Fradkin's Legacy Forward.
The legacy of our founder, Dr. Irving Fradkin, was an important part of Scholarship America’s 2021. No one in our organization is closer to that legacy than Jeff Silverman—Board of Trustees member, Dreams to Success Event
Co-Chair, and Dr. Fradkin’s grandson.
Jeff is the managing partner of The Summit Group, a youth sports coach and a mentor for at-risk teenagers, and a longtime supporter of Scholarship America.
“In 1958, my grandfather had an idea—he asked everyone in his community to contribute so that every student could get a scholarship," Jeff said, discussing why he's committed to being a third-generation supporter of our work. "Through the years, that shared vision has guided Scholarship America to where it is today—the largest provider of private scholarships in the nation.”

In 2021, we launched an exciting new partnership with the Common App, the nonprofit membership organization dedicated to access, equity and integrity in the college admissions process. This partnership furthers both organizations’ work to close persistent racial and socioeconomic gaps in access to college scholarships.
“Today, more than $6 billion in private scholarships is available to eligible students pursuing higher education. But too often, the students who stand to gain the most from that funding are not the ones who actually access it. We’re excited to partner with Scholarship America to explore new ways to reach the student groups, particularly Black and Latinx applicants, who face the greatest financial roadblocks on their path to success in higher education.”
— Jenny Rickard, President & CEO of Common App
“The Dream Award has impacted my life immensely. “Higher education is the key to a successful, fruitful and contributing life. Having met hundreds of the students we have helped during the years, they always tell me that our scholarships and the higher education that came with them, made a transformational difference in their life. I know it did with mine.”
Since 1964, Philip Webster has devoted his time and resources to our student support efforts, serving on our Advisory Board, Board of Trustees and, currently, as an Honor Roll Trustee. Phil was also instrumental in founding our annual Dreams to Success celebration and fundraiser, which raises nearly $1 million each year.
We’re also paying tribute to Dr. Fradkin—and re-imagining his vision for the future—with the Fradkin Legacy Awards, established to help outstanding Dollars for Scholars affiliates build renewable, impactful awards and to expand their support beyond scholarships.
The largest award of $15,000 went to Illinois’ EB211 Dollars for Scholars, which matches its 30 scholarship recipients each year with mentors, and which is now working to foster paid internships for qualifying mentees; programs and opportunities to learn more about professional and social networking opportunities; and community internship and alumni databases.
