“It wasn’t just goods that travelled through trade networks — people, information, ideas and cultures were shared, too. Take kaya toast, for example. The Hainanese community has largely been credited with its contribution, but kaya also shares similarities with the traditional Portugese Doce de Ovos (sweet egg cream). That’s because the Portuguese had established major trading outposts in this part of the world during the spice trade.”
