WILD SPIRITS MADE BY THE SEA
Norman has spent his whole life in the water
one way or another. He grew up in the fishing
town of Ullapool, where oilskins are always in vogue, and followed in a long tradition of West
Highlanders who earn their keep fishing the
wild waters for shrimp.

Loch Assynt is one of his best-loved spots, an isolated location half an hour’s drive from Ullapool. It’s surrounded with sandstone mountains that seem alive and
cast long shadows on the water, which ripples softly like wrinkled leather, and reflects the auburn clouds at dawn.
As a wild swimmer Norman knows the waters around Ullapool better than most. He’s completed some seemingly impossible open-water challenges including swimming 23 kilometres (14 miles) from Anlochan, near Achiltibuie, to Ullapool.
The longest challenge? A brutal 39-kilometre
(24-mile) non-stop swim in the North Minch. But
it was after a film of Norman swimming in frozen Loch Glascarnoch went viral that his notoriety as one of the UK’s most extreme athletes went global.
Every time is a new experience and with each stroke Norman comes closer to nature. The unparalleled joy he feels of being in the water is enough to stave off the Scottish elements one more time.

WILD SPIRITS MADE BY THE SEA
Being in the water is a big part of how Norman spends his downtime. He never misses a swim,
even when it’s far below freezing and the lochs are covered in a layer of ice. Sometimes Norman leaves the neoprene swimsuit behind and enters the water in only a pair of swimming trunks.
