A favourite photo spot is the Museum Harbour, which is lined with lovingly- restored, traditional sailing ships, and has the pretty Old Town buildings as a backdrop.
Foodies must stop at the famous 200-year-old Café Niederegger, which specialises in marzipan and praline treats. Its chefs create incredible marzipan sculptures, and there are over 50 flavours to sample.

More watery scenes await in Schwerin, Germany’s smallest state capital. Set among seven lakes, this picture-perfect city boasts photogenic historic timber-framed townhouses, art collections dating from the Middle Ages, a shopping district with speciality boutiques, and lakes providing ample watersports opportunities.
Medieval towns
Lübeck played a major trading role, and its water-surrounded Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its most famous landmark is the impressive Holsten Gate, a twin-towered Gothic city gate guarded by two life-sized iron lions.

Another important Hanseatic League member, thanks to its salt production, is the Medieval town of Lüneburg. Now a buzzing university town, it survived World War II largely unscathed, so boasts many original buildings and pretty architecture.
For a relaxing drink, head to the riverside Stint Market — Lüneburg’s pub district — where you can enjoy views of the water, quaint historic buildings, and the Medieval wooden crane that is still in working order today.

The crowning jewel of this lake district is Schwerin Castle, set on an island on Schwerin Lake. With tall turrets and domes, lavishly furnished rooms, and pretty manicured gardens, it’s certainly fit for royalty. It was formerly the residence of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, and visitors today can tour the reception rooms and admire the displays.
Germany’s wind-swept islands in the North Sea, seven of which are inhabited, offer peaceful escapes to those looking for tranquility and beaches stretching for miles.

Sand dunes and sugary beaches
Car-free Baltrum island has a 4-kilometre beach perfect for surfing and kiteboarding, while Langeoog boasts mudflats, flower meadows, and towering sand dunes. Swanky Sylt has Michelin-starred restaurants (we recommend trying the island’s speciality fish burger), trendy bars, pretty, thatched cottages, and 40 kilometers of glorious sugary beaches.
