Professional Packing Hacks
Packing the right way can be the difference between restful respite and a frenzied vacation filled with detours to find forgotten items. Below are five tips to maximize space, while minimizing stress.
Tip 1: Roll, don’t fold, your clothes.
Benefit: You’ll create twice the space and prevent wrinkles.
Travelers who roll their clothes note they have more room for additional items, allowing them to carry fewer luggage. In addition, clothes don’t wrinkle as much (which is always a bonus!).
Tip 2: Organize by outfit.
Benefit: You’ll avoid overpacking and bring exactly what you need.
Instead of packing a random number of shirts and pants, coordinate each day’s outfit in advance and pack what is needed for each.
Tip 3: Select multi-purpose items.
Benefit: Maximizing the use of each item results in the need to pack less.
For pajamas, pack leggings and t-shirts that you can use for other activities; bring a scarf that can dress up an outfit but also keep you warm; and pack shoes that can be worn with multiple outfits.
Tip 4: Layer items starting at the top of the bag.
Benefit: Your suitcase won’t topple as you wheel through the airport.
Pack your clothes first, making sure you put the first outfit you’ll wear at the top so you don’t have to immediately dig to find it upon arrival. Heavier items, such as shoes, should go at the bottom of the bag.
Tip 5: Use clear bags to pack the most important items.
Benefit: See, at-a-glance, that you’ve packed the must-haves.
Packing items, such as toiletries, inside clear bags can be a tremendous help when unpacking or finding what you need.

A 3-Bag Packing Plan for the Essentials
Bag 1: Toiletries
Keep a clear toiletry bag already pre-packed in your home so you don’t forget a toothbrush or hairbrush. Simply refresh it with new items as needed and you will have a toiletry bag at the ready for all your getaways. Use all-in-one options, such as moisturizers with SPF. Be sure to include location-relevant needs (e.g., bug spray for wooded areas and sunscreen for island locales).
Bag 2: Carry on
Put your plane and train essentials in one place, including chargers, earbuds, lip balm, travel documents and a neck pillow.
Bag 3: Safety
Pack all the items you will need while traveling during the pandemic, including face coverings, sanitizer, proof of a negative COVID-19 test and a list of the venues that are open or closed in the destination you are visiting.
Safety Tip: When traveling, remember to check local COVID-19 travel restrictions and HGV’s Travel Updates page for the latest property news, including resort re-openings.
