Executive Vice President & Chief Customer Officer Hilton Grand Vacations
Dear Members and Owners, Welcome to your first Club Traveler magazine issue of 2024! We started the year off strong with the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions from January 18–21, as well as the exciting announcement about the closing of HGV’s acquisition of Bluegreen Vacations. One of the highlights for me at this year’s Tournament of Champions was talking with Onkar Birk, HGV’s chief technology officer, about the enhancements he and his team have been working on for 2024 that will make your online experience with us even better. We also spoke about the recent launch of our unified website where Members and Owners can access their accounts through a single portal, streamlining the login process and making it easier to manage multiple accounts. (You can view the full video here). In the announcement of the Bluegreen Vacations acquisition, you've likely read the update from our Chief Executive Officer Mark Wang about the changes we anticipate as we combine these two great companies into one. I’m looking forward to everything the future holds for our Owners and Members, and I hope you are as excited as we are about the opportunities that lie ahead.
Happy journeys ahead,

Whether it’s whale watching with a citizen science mission, embracing sustainable farming practices or taking part in rebuilding forests on The Big Island, there are many ways to enrich your vacation and support the resilient communities of Hawaii.

Nature has its own agenda
Park ranger
There’s nothing like the invigorating experience of exploring a national or state park on vacation, whether you’re roaming the wide-open spaces of North America or beyond. And who better to model wilderness travel than those who have dedicated their lives to protecting our parks? Sara Toms-Bergquist, park ranger at Lost Dutchman State Park in Arizona, and Captain Peter Estes from the California State Parks Law Enforcement and Emergency Services Division share their best tips for traveling like a park ranger.

Explore responsibly
“Every park ranger’s goal is to protect the natural and cultural resources for future generations, and when visitors come in with the same mindset, everyone enjoys their time in the park,” Peter explains. “It is each individual’s responsibility to adhere to the principle of ‘pack it in, pack it out,’ meaning that whatever is brought in should be taken out as well,” Sara says. “These may seem like small tasks but can make a big difference if we all work together.”
Travelers should embrace flexibility if the unexpected happens. “Our primary goal is for everyone to have an unforgettable time, but it is crucial to acknowledge that we can’t control nature,” Sara advises. “Whether it’s encountering wildlife, enduring monsoon storms or power outages, nature has its own agenda.” Peter’s top suggestion when preparing for your trip is having multiple backup options: “Have a plan A, B and C so you can enjoy your time at the park if an outside factor pops up and forces you to change direction.”
“It is important to research the specific park you want to visit in order to have a better understanding of its offerings,” Sara explains. “For instance, if you plan on hiking in a park, it is advisable to research the trails as they vary in difficulty.” You should also check the weather forecast, especially sunrise and sunset times to be sure you can finish your hike well before dark.

Málaga
One City, Five Ways
Over the last two decades, Málaga has emerged as one of Europe’s most impressive tourism success stories. One of the continent’s oldest cities, it was founded in the eighth century by the Phoenicians and subsequently ruled by the Romans and Arabs. Today, this charming seaside city brings in a record-breaking number of visitors every year — where else can you sip a glass of Ronda white wine next to a Roman theater under the shadow of an 11th-century walled Moorish fort and then hit the beach? From world-class museums and reimagined art spaces to delectable restaurants and cafés, here’s your guide to soaking it all in while visiting Málaga.
The weight of Málaga’s past can be seen in the cluster of historical landmarks that are concentrated in the city center. The most famous is undoubtedly the Alcazaba, the medieval Moorish citadel built between 1057 and 1063. The word “Alcazaba” is Arabic for fortification and Málaga’s is one of the best preserved in Spain. It’s worth the hike up the hill (or take the elevator) for the incredible views of the city and the chance to tour the stunning gardens, arches, fountains and palaces. Just above it is the Gibralfaro Castle, which was built in the 14th century to protect the Alcazaba. It’s a steep hike but well worth the walk for the chance to experience the walled ramparts and take in more breathtaking views. Down below, you won’t want to miss the formidable Málaga Cathedral, built on the site of a mosque in the 1500s. Known as La Manquita (or “one-armed one”) because it’s missing a tower, the cathedral was constructed in the Renaissance and Baroque styles. It features 40 wood statues of the saints, carved by one of Spain’s most celebrated woodworkers of the day.

At the Monuments
Málaga is Picasso’s hometown, so you should prioritize visiting the Picasso Museum (Museo Picasso Málaga) before exploring some of the city’s three dozen other museums. Opened in 2003 in the elegant 16th-century Buenavista Palace, the museum displays the paintings and sculptures of one of the most famous artists of the 20th century. Fans can see the influences of Picasso’s youth in Málaga, including bullfighting scenes and the Mediterranean Sea. The Málaga Museum (Museo de Málaga) is located in a former customs house that features exhibitions from classical antiquity and paintings chronicling the city’s emergence as an industrial and cultural center in the 19th century. Another popular destination is the new Málaga Automobile and Fashion Museum (Museo Automovilístico y de la Moda de Málaga), which houses more than 80 vintage cars in an architecturally intriguing old tobacco factory.
In the Museums
Looking for a fun day trip? It’s just a two-hour train ride from Málaga to the magnificent mountain city of Ronda, set atop the dramatic El Tajo gorge, where legend has it that it rains upward. As you cross the New Bridge (Puente Nuevo) over the Guadalevín River, admire views into the walled, Arabic old town. Other highlights include an 18th-century bullring and the Mondragón Palace (Palacio de Mondragón), which showcases the region’s archaeological history. Make a reservation for lunch on the plaza at the upscale Casa Maria restaurant. When you’re closer to sea level, don’t miss the beautiful coastal town of Nerja, located an hour east of Málaga. A paved overlook with white arches called the Balcony of Europe (Balcón de Europa) offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea. Stop at Bar Mirador for a drink. Visitors are also mesmerized by the Nerja Caves (Cueva de Nerja), which hunters, gatherers and fishermen used as a shelter and burial ground for more than 30,000 years. You can take a 45-minute tour of the rooms of the subterranean network.
The warm, dry climate and soil diversity of Andalusia has made Málaga a celebrated wine-growing region. There are five distinct zones — each with its own terroir — but the most famous varietals are the Málaga fruity white wines and dessert wines made from muscatel and Pedro Ximénez grapes. It’s well worth a stop at some of the most popular wineries near Ronda, such as Doña Felisa Winery and Bodega García Hidalgo, which offer lovely afternoons of tastings and tapas. Back in the city, you can sample them all at the many wine bars, including La Vinoteca de Moreno & Monroy in the historic center of Málaga, where you can have a glass alongside Andalusian specialties while sitting at a table made from a wine barrel. The sleek Vertical Wine Bar offers a whopping 50 types of wine by the glass daily with food pairing suggestions.

It’s easy to see why Playa de la Malagueta is Málaga’s most famous beach. Easily accessible from the city center, this long, sandy public beach has plenty of room for everyone. The waves are gentle in this part of the sparkling Mediterranean — the palm trees are swaying and there are chair and umbrella rentals. If you miss the vendors walking by with cold cervezas (beers), check out the local chiringuitos (small beach bars). The popular Chiringuito Caleta Playa serves many kinds of seafood, including sardines grilled over an open fire, a local favorite. If you want to explore some of the area’s quieter beaches and feast on more local barbecue, check out Playa el Palo or Playas de las Acacias, both reachable by taxi or scooter.

Sahara Sunset
You’ll feel your stress melt away as you walk into this elegant, Moorish-inspired jewel on the southern shores of Málaga. With views of the Alboran Sea, Sahara Sunset offers the best of both worlds: a spacious, calming retreat located minutes from the beach, bars and restaurants. The luxurious resort features modern Studios and 1- and 2-Bedroom Suites with terraces or balconies and fully equipped kitchens. After a morning walk to the marina, you’ll have plenty to do at the resort. Take a dip in the indoor and outdoor pools, tackle a novel in one of the deck chairs (with or without a cocktail in hand — your choice!), and challenge your kids to a round of mini-golf or table tennis. Round out your day by relaxing in the hot tub, sauna or steam room before dinner.

Set off on a Hawaiian journey that goes beyond the norm by choosing from six unique opportunities under the Mālama Hawaiʻi Program. As you explore Hawaii’s stunning scenery and vibrant culture, the program — whose name means “to give back” — encourages you to deepen your connection with the land while you work to preserve each of the islands’ precious heritage and natural environment. The following activities are excellent ways to make a meaningful and lasting contribution to the Hawaiian islands you visit on your vacation.
Malama Hawai i
Wild Side Specialty Tours on Oahu provides a unique dolphin and whale spotting tour that incorporates a citizen science component into its charter. This interactive experience allows participants to learn about the marine ecosystem alongside a team of biologists and naturalists. Attendees will engage in activities like monitoring coral health, collecting data on marine debris, photographing and naming whale sharks and identifying dolphin calves, all of which are in service of ongoing research efforts.

Hawaii’s islands are an enticing destination for environmentally minded nature lovers
Go on a Citizen Science Mission
Transform your beach day into a meaningful activity and join a movement that has removed over 265,000 pieces of debris from Maui’s shores. This initiative, led by the Pacific Whale Foundation, allows you to participate in a cleanup on your schedule. You can pick up an upcycled grain bag, gloves and a datasheet from PacWhale Eco-Adventures’ Ocean Store in Ma‘alaea, Moku Roots or Maui Brewing Company in Kihei, or opt to print the datasheet yourself and use your own bag. Choose any coastline section for cleanup, then complete and return the datasheet. Your information will be added to a marine debris database, which is used to develop mitigation and prevention strategies within Maui County.
Participate in a Beach Cleanup
Oahu’s Kualoa Ranch may be immediately recognizable from the iconic stampede scene in “Jurassic Park,” but it’s also been a private nature reserve since 1850. Regarded as one of the island’s most sacred sites, the ranch offers a two-hour Mālama Experience that immerses you in traditional Hawaiian practices. Here you’ll engage in activities such as harvesting kalo (taro), thatching traditional Hawaiian hale (houses), gathering stones for rock walls and cultivating a māla lāʻau lapaʻau (medicinal plant garden). As an added treat, you may have the opportunity to refresh in a stream or the ranch’s secluded beach.
Try Your Hand at Sustainable Farming
The honu (green sea turtle) is revered as a sacred symbol of longevity and endurance, but sadly, the species is endangered in Hawaiian waters. The Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund on Maui provides various volunteer opportunities for those interested in learning about and protecting Hawaii’s sole native reptile. Participants can engage in activities like tracking sea turtle movements, safeguarding nesting females during the breeding season and ensuring hatchlings safely reach the ocean. By joining these efforts, you’ll contribute to the survival of over 10,000 endangered sea turtle hatchlings, helping to preserve a vital part of Hawaii’s natural heritage.
Assist Sea Turtles
Visit a Volcano and Rebuild a Sacred Forest
Led by native guide Kimo Duarte, the Hualālai Crater Experience on the island of Hawaii (aka, The Big Island) starts at 4,800 feet (1,463 meters). As part of the tour, you’ll navigate the rugged terrain in a Polaris Ranger 4x4, stopping at the historic Duarte cabin en route to the summit. A two-mile hike at just under 8,000 feet (2,438 meters) of elevation reveals stunning volcanic scenery and sweeping views of Mauna Kea, the Kohala Mountains and the Kona Coast. This five-hour adventure culminates in a meaningful act: planting a Koa tree to honor local customs and aid in forest regeneration, leaving a lasting tribute to this sacred landscape.
Discover Ohia Ridge Farm, a secluded treasure on the North Shore of Hawaii’s Big Island and play a role in the expansion of its native forests. Perched at 3,300 feet (1,005 meters) on Mauna Kea’s slopes and bordering the Hamakua Forest Reserve, this working farm welcomes volunteers on weekends (August through May) and weekdays (June and July). Engage in a four-hour experience (8 a.m.–12 p.m., including lunch) where you’ll assist in potting seedlings and planting trees and shrubs. Not only will you be preserving the habitat for the island’s unique plants and birds, but you’ll also learn more about Hawaii’s native flora. You will depart with a deeper understanding of Hawaii's ‘aina (land) and the satisfaction of aiding its conservation.
Contribute to a Reforestation Effort
Supporting small businesses at a farmers’ market is an excellent way to discover some of the finest local flavors, produce and products. On Oahu, check out the vibrant Kakaʻako Farmers Market (Saturdays, 8 a.m.–12 p.m.), known for its diverse range of stalls offering everything from local art and handcrafted beachwear to fresh-baked goods. Over on Maui, the Wailea Village Farmers Market (Tuesdays, 8–11 a.m.) provides an opportunity to sample local produce and traditional recipes, as well as pick up island-inspired designs. Meanwhile, the Hilo Farmers Market in downtown Hilo (daily, 7 a.m.–3 p.m.) is a lively venue where you can find island jams, roasted Kona coffee and a wide array of local delicacies, with Wednesdays and Saturdays featuring an even greater variety of vendors.

There’s a powerful glamor to long-distance train trips, harking back to pioneer days before cars became the go-to method of cross-country transportation. And sure, you could drive. But when you’re required to have eyes on the road, you miss the chance to immerse yourself in the essence of the countryside outside the window. Traveling by train allows you to be in the moment rather than rushing through airport security or languishing in road traffic. This method of slow travel, as it’s come to be known, rejects the idea of speed and focuses instead on depth, lingering longer and embracing the journey itself in addition to the destination. And the epic long-distance train voyages in North America are a perfect opportunity to embrace this leisurely mindset. Sedona is made for outdoor adventures, with rugged terrain and expansive desert vistas just waiting to be explored. But that’s not all. The city is also known for its spiritual vortex sites, beckoning visitors to explore a holistic journey of self-discovery through treatments at luxurious spa facilities.
No Sedona vacation is complete without a tour around its red rock spires and arid desert landscapes. Chicken Point is a perfect spot to admire views of the area’s two state parks and over 1.8 million acres (nearly 7,300 square kilometers) of national forest, meaning there’s plenty to discover whether you hike, bike or kayak.
For a bird’s-eye view of Sedona’s red rock formations, buttes, mountains and juniper forests, take a hot-air balloon ride with Red Rock Balloons. You’ll have to rise before dawn to greet the sunrise from above, but the magnificent views are well worth the early morning wake-up call.
Local foodies head to Elote Cafe for its inventive, Mexico-meets-Arizona menu, which is crafted from local, organic produce. Highlights include the lamb adobo and the tomato and nopales salad.
Built in the style of a Mexican Village, Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village is a characterful place to shop for jewelry, art and traditional ceramics in charming shops linked by cobbled walkways and colonnades.
With four major vortex sites, Sedonais a spiritual wonderland forthose seeking deeper meaning. Feel the healing energy of the city at the iconic Chapel of the Holy Cross, built into the stunning red rocks.

Dine at Mariposa Latin Inspired Grill — one of six restaurants owned by local chef and restaurateur Lisa Dahl — to enjoy the taste and intoxicating aroma of its central, wood-fired grill. You’ll enjoy South American-inspired dishes, including ceviche and handmade empanadas, served with picture-perfect views across the desert.
A yoga hike is a nourishing way to tap into the area’s beauty and healing energy. Down Dog Sedona offers group and private tours, and will transport you to safe and scenic places to practice in some of the area’s most beautiful spots.

A winemaking region since the 17th century, Arizona’s Verde Valley offers various estate vineyards and small production wineries for visitors to enjoy. The high altitude, volcanic soil and mild winters combine to help create impressive reds like syrah, merlot and cabernet. Take a wine tour and tasting at one of the vineyards like Page Springs Cellar where you can savor the region’s terroir.
Don’t miss the chance to be outside at dusk. There’s something soulful and restoring about peacefully watching a luminous white moon rising serenely above Sedona’s ethereal red-hued landscape.
Sedona’s creative atmosphere is a lure for artists and artisans, among them Michael Gibson, who opened Appaloosa Trading Co here in 2020. You can watch the leathersmith at work as he creates an array of belts, handbags and accessories, all made in the traditional styles of the American Southwest.
The Verde River is a wildlife paradise. Keep your eye out for local flora and fauna, including great blue herons, hawks, bald eagles and coyotes. Or cool off on the river by kayak, stand-up paddleboard or tube.
In downtown Sedona, the Hillside Sedona Shopping Center nestles beneath the famous red rocks.
