Our research shows the importance of first establishing full range of motion (ROM) and then strengthening the knee before surgery. Under the guidance of Dr. Shelbourne or
Dr. Benner, you’ll work with the same physical therapist (PT) from pre-op through post-op.

Our Physical Therapy Team, from left to right:
We use a patellar tendon graft (PTG) to reconstruct your ACL. "PTG grafts are the strongest grafts available and allow for unrestricted rehabilitation and earlier return to sport than
the hamstring grafts used by most orthopedic surgeons," says
K. Donald Shelbourne, MD.
2. SURGERY: Graft Choice
Our post-surgical protocol prevents swelling by having you lay down with your knee above your heart for the first five days instead of walking frequently. The day of surgery, you’ll start full extension exercises on the repaired knee and strengthening exercises on the donor-graft knee. ROM exercises will continue to be emphasized in the repaired knee, followed by strengthening.
3. POST-op REHABILITATION strategy

The Shelbourne Knee Center surgical team
We’ve treated more than 1,500 patients with knee arthritis. By tracking their outcomes, we’ve learned that 76% don’t need knee replacement surgery after completing our targeted physical therapy protocol. For those who do need surgery, our pre-op PT and post-op rehab programs lead to an easier recovery and a better result.

post-op recovery
We’ve developed a specialized physical therapy protocol for knee arthritis that focuses on restoring first your range of motion (the movement potential of a joint) and then your knee strength. After completing our research-based program, 76% of patients did not need knee replacement surgery.
Targeted PT protocol
01
Patients who continue to have pain despite physical therapy improvements may choose total knee replacement. Achieving optimal fit and function requires the right implant and a reproducible process. Orthopedic surgeon Rodney Benner, MD, seen here, uses an implant system that consistently has been shown to optimize patient outcomes.
Total Knee Arthroplasty
02
After total knee replacement, you’ll work closely with your physical therapist on an individualized rehab program. Once you’ve gained full range of motion, you’ll begin strengthening your knee. Our research shows that working in this order will get you back to living the life you love faster.
