Monumental Basketball brings the Washington Wizards, Washington Mystics, Capital City Go-Go and Wizards District Gaming together as a collective group with strategy, development and wellness led by industry experts Sashi Brown, Daniel Medina and Tommy Sheppard.
The MedStar Health Performance Center is the hub for Monumental Basketball, serving as the training facility for the Wizards, Mystics and Go-Go. The state-of-the-art complex, designed with innovative technology such as Kinexon positioning and performance system (indoor GPS system) and Polar Team System (Heart Rate Monitoring) was opened in 2018 and includes two full courts (with 8 total baskets), an expended 1500 square foot weight room which include equipment such as Keiser functional trainers, alterG antigravity treadmill and Woodway treadmill. The MedStar Health Performance Center also includes a full kitchen and dining area, where the training team collaborates with food and nutrition leaders and chefs from Flik Hospitality to specifically engineer meals to help Monumental Basketball’s athletes achieve peak performance.

An Homage To our past
Digital displays telling the Monumental Basketball story are exhibited throughout the facility while the main practice court features the 1978 NBA Championship banner of the Washington Bullets and the 2019 WNBA Championship banner of the Washington Mystics. As an homage to the athletes who have helped build the Monumental Basketball franchises, a new Legends Wall stands near the practice court to honor exceptional performances by Wes Unseld, Earl Monroe, Chamique Holdsclaw, Alana Beard and others as a trophy case recognizing the achievements of our athletes is exhibited in the foyer. The retired jerseys of Bullets players Unseld, Monroe, Phil Chenier, Elvin Hayes, and Gus Johnson also proudly hang in the practice court area.
Throughout the MedStar Health Performance Center there are designs celebrating the team’s connection to the Washington, D.C. community. The D.C. map is mounted on the ceiling highlighting Ward 8 while the Legends Wall is built in concrete to reflect the look of D.C.’s famous monuments.
A New Entertainment Hot Spot
The adjacent Entertainment and Sports Arena serves as the home arena for the Mystics and Go-Go. Opened in 2018 with the inaugural season of the Go-Go, the Entertainment and Sports Arena saw the Mystics christen their new home with the 2019 WNBA championship. Located in the heart of Ward 8, ESA can hold up to 4,200 for basketball games and 5,000 for concerts and other events, bringing new entertainment options to Congress Heights residents and an estimated 350,000 visitors per year. To further solidify their commitment to the Congress Heights community, Monumental Sports & Entertainment has made a $10 million community investment towards community and economic revitalization of the St. Elizabeths East campus and surrounding community over its lease term.
Paying Homage to our community
The primary design objective of the MedStar Health Performance Center was to reflect the teams who call the space home (Wizards, Mystics, Go-Go) and to reflect our hometown, Washington, D.C. We wanted to bring the Monumental company brand into the space – from our signature Monumental Red color, our Monumental ‘M-Star’ mark, and an emphasis on our brand DNA around technology & innovation. Throughout the space we recognize our athletes, but we also prize our teamwork and commitment to the Team as paramount to our success both in the past and in the future.
The design of MedStar Health Performance Center allows us to share the history of our teams and showcase the seminal moments and the extraordinary accomplishments of the athletes who have graced our franchises. This takes place in multiple forms: video walls, special objects, large scale quotes and images, highlighted by the signature Monumental Wall recognizing League awards, and tribute spaces.
The MedStar Health performance center embodies our commitment to technology and innovation, both in the elements we installed around the space but also in our material choices. Our new weight room and training room both showcase state-of-the-art equipment supported by touch-screen and kiosk-based technology to create a customized athlete experience in the space.
We wanted the space to reflect our community: including ‘The District’ in the space, D.C. maps as backgrounds and textures, the D.C. flag in the ceiling, local community artists creating one-of-a-kind murals in our patio showcase and our community activism featured throughout the space (both physically & digitally). We also wanted to celebrate our players – past and present – who have contributed deeply to our community, and in some cases have been recognized by the Leagues and their peers for their activism with annual Community awards. Finally, our use of the concrete slab is a nod to the monuments and stately buildings, all from quarried stone, that define the look of our City.
