Lighting the Modern Campus – AIAILT|HSW, FBPEILT
November 12th 2:00PM ET
This course explores how lighting supports the modern higher education campus through a design-led, standards-informed approach. Participants will review key principles and related recommended practices, then apply those principles to a range of campus environments including lecture spaces, laboratories, student centers, circulation zones, and athletics facilities. The course also examines how lighting can reinforce student well-being, flexibility, sustainability, visual comfort, and campus identity while responding to the different priorities of universities, community colleges, and trade schools. Finally, it introduces how higher education projects are funded and delivered, and how architects, engineers, university stakeholders, and manufacturer partners collaborate throughout the campus project process.

Meet Your Presenters
Todd Quinlan graduated from the University of Colorado with an emphasis in Lighting & Architectural Engineering. For nearly 25 years, he has worked in the industry as a Lighting Designer, Lighting Agent, and in Manufacturer Sales. Todd’s broad understanding of the lighting industry, lighting science and interests in emerging technologies helps him promote complete illumination systems from the luminaire to the controls and IoT environment they are being installed into.
Tara Wahl leverages deep expertise in lighting solutions to collaborate with agency partners and top specifiers across North America. She works closely with project
teams to bring design concepts to life, supporting successful outcomes across outdoor, landscape, K-12, healthcare, behavioral health, and high-abuse environments. Her strategic approach helps ensure lighting solutions meet both design intent and performance goals.
The course examines how light quality, visual comfort, glare mitigation, daylight integration, tunable white systems, and flexible control strategies can support the needs of students, educators, and administrators. Emerging considerations related to occupant experience, adaptability, sustainability, and connected lighting systems are also explored, demonstrating how thoughtful lighting design can help create engaging, comfortable, and high-performing educational environments.
