The American Hereford Cattle Breeders Association Building of 1919 showcases its neo-classical revival style with symmetrical, monumental proportions and a polished stone surface.
Located at 300 West 11th Street in Kansas City, MO, the architecture's grand scale and simple geometric form, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, contributes to the West 11th Street historic district.
From 1919 to 1953, the American Hereford Association occupied this building. The building became the Ararat Shrine Temple in 1953 when the American Hereford Association moved to 11th and Hereford Drive. As of 2010, this building serves as offices for several businesses and has a new front sign indicating it is now the Financial Assurance Building.
In 2023, the building added luminaires by Hydrel to enhance the visibility and safety. Adding lighting around the building perimeters can deter criminal activity, reduce accidents, and provide peace of mind for occupants.
At the same time, these luminaires highlight architectural features such as its colossal columns and are used to transform the structure for special events. Photos show a lighting design to celebrate the Kansas City Chiefs.
So, next time you're in Kansas City, take a moment to appreciate this architectural wonder. It reminds us of the city's journey and the people who made it possible.
