In the LED era, many projects have sought to achieve the highest efficacy at the expense of quality lighting. As LED efficacy plateaus, there has been a renewed focus on quality lighting, reflected in current electrical codes, building standards, and rebate requirements. Downlights are precise lighting instruments that deliver layers of light through optics and configurations, unlike any other luminaire type. Because of their unique features and applications, we should consider how downlights can contribute to light quality, partner with architecture, and enhance occupant comfort. In this presentation, we explore the refined expectations of modern downlights and empower you with the knowledge of how downlights can be used for the best, quality lighting design. Learn the development of downlights and their unique construction as luminaires Differentiate between functional and architectural lighting, recognizing the common visual objectives of lighting design Identify the layers of light commonly used in architectural lighting design Recognize downlighting's unique advantages when creating separate layers of light within an application
