As multiple downlighting manufacturers have entered the LED space, it’s been a challenge to understand what makes a good quality downlight. Today, we see that there’s a renewed focus to understand what quality lighting means, how it affects users in a space, and how to identify a good quality downlighting product among a multitude of options.
Downlights are precise lighting instruments that can create and enhance emotional experiences when applied correctly. It can easily support layers of light through optics and configurations, unlike any other luminaire type. Because of their unique features and applications, we should consider what denotes a quality downlighting product technically and mechanically.
In this presentation, we explore how to identify a good quality downlight, what to look for when specifying these lighting instruments, and what should be considered in the specification language before adding them into a project.
Learning Objectives:
•
•
•
•
Analyze what constitutes foundational principals of 'Quality of Light' for downlight and how to specify it
Explore the differences between batwing, lamertian, & teardrop light distributions, and how to specify for their unique benefits
Understand how modularity helps evolve the design intent, simplify specification, and improve project lifecycle value
Evaluate how codes and standards can deliver lighting solutions that are efficient, maintainable, and future-ready
