LAW HAS GONE MISSING
By Deanna Rodger
With thanks to I. Stephanie Boyce, President of the Law Society,
for her contribution. As played at her inauguration on 14 October 2021.
They were last seen photocopying their hands
over and over again, muttering about not being recognized.
Blank sheets of paper falling to their feet.
Description:
Their eyes should be dancing.
Should be welcoming.
Should be accessible.
Shouldn't be a pane of glass with nothing coming back the other way.
You should be seen in the eyes of Law.
Law should see you and notice you.
They had cheese and onion crisps for lunch after
a puttanesca pizza,
They’ll be sucking mints, breath like air.
Necessary.
Their voice sometimes starts off as a whisper
lean in close to hear. For some it becomes a roar.
For some it rings out to voicemail.
It should be whole bodied.
It should not be cruel.
Found:
Law staggering with grace feigning ease,
pushing a shopping cart big enough
to be all things to all people.
Lifted by a remarkable hand.
Invisible until gone.
In it packets of justice, cartons of equality,
a loaf of liberty, flat packed fairness.
All these things and more.

To provide a fresh perspective, law firm Addleshaw Goddard turned to poets, because lawyers and poets use the same tools… words. These two professions use words to convey meaning; inspire change; and help us understand and navigate our world.
