POSSIBILITIES
(after Wisława Szymborska)

Possibilities – (after Wisława Szymborska). From a conversation with Law students, Gintare Saladziute and Leyla Hussein Osman.
I prefer languages.
I prefer definitions.
I prefer good feedback.
I prefer my sister’s ambitions and professional pathways.
I prefer life skills to numbers.
I prefer carpenters and cooks.
I prefer decent normal human beings.
I prefer ‘bad mark’ boosts of motivation.
I prefer a formulaic sense to wait and see.
I prefer tenacity.
I prefer to wrestle with the problem.
I prefer feeling accomplished to feeling out of contact.
I prefer happy clients to complicated sitcoms.
I prefer everyday actions that maintain my passion
I prefer to reject rejections.
I prefer an ability to adapt quickly to information.
I prefer new worlds, new languages, new systems.
I’d prefer our law to respond faster:
thorough codification to vague implications.
I prefer assumptions of inspiration, of surprise, of progression. I prefer knowledge visible, applied and impactful.
I prefer differences in halls, at the bar, in court to gatekeepers
and Whats App contacts.
I prefer the future.
I prefer mock trials to dreams of trials, solutions to spirals.
I prefer being vocal about issues I don't agree with to the slip
stream of silence.
‘Wow! See what change I’ve made’.

To provide a fresh perspective, law firm Addleshaw Goddard turned to poets, because lawyers and poets use the same tools… words. These two professions use words to convey meaning; inspire change; and help us understand and navigate our world.
