You Become a Trainee
By Leyla Josephine
The next morning is your first day on the job
You relive the last five years of hard graft that has led to this point
Brushing your teeth you can’t believe you’ve made it this far
Lectures, work experience, late nights at the library - it’s all a blur
Carefully chosen smart-casual clothes hang lifeless on the door
You practice introducing yourself ten times in mirror
Earlier, you watched Legally Blonde, The Good Wife and Suits
hoping to come across some last minute tips
But now that feels ridiculous
You go to bed tossing, turning, restless, nervous
You try to calm yourself by tracing the journey to the office
The walk, the bus, the train, going into the building for the first time
With thanks to our Ellie Richardson and Lorna Dean, Trainees at Addleshaw Goddard, for their contributions.

THE NIGHT BEFORE
Your reflection on the glass, all eyes on you
Lambs to the slaughter, trainees to the grind
You set your alarm for 6am
and pray to god
you don’t sleep in.

THE INVISIBLE HAND’S
HIDDEN HELPER
By Rishi Dastidar
You stare at the ceiling
What if I spill my coffee all down myself ?
Or forget someone’s name?
What if I mix up my indemnities and my warranties?
Or if the hours are just too long?
What if I don’t know enough?
What if I’m not good enough?
You set your alarm for 6am
and pray to god you don’t sleep in
Your reflection on the glass, all eyes on youLambs to the slaughter, trainees to the grind
