2. Innovation

AAM MLP & Energy Infrastructure Portfolio: AAM began offering its first UIT with MLP exposure back in 2011. Then, in 2015, it offered the first of its Midstream MLP themed UITs. These UITs invested in MLPs and CEFs which had MLP exposure. However, as the universe of MLP CEFs consolidated, AAM was once again driven to innovate and began offering its AAM MLP & Energy Infrastructure Portfolio in 2024. This portfolio invests in MLPs and energy stocks as well as CEFs and ETFs that invest in MLPs and energy infrastructure stocks. AAM is now the only UIT sponsor that offers an MLP themed UIT (as of September 2025).

AAM MLT, Large Cap Buffered 15 Portfolio: AAM was experimenting with OTC derivatives in UITs as early as 2008 and offered its first “structured UIT” product called MERIT in 2011. Then, in 2019, it offered the first of its buffered UITs utilizing FLEX options.

Blue Chip Covered Call Portfolio: AAM began offering covered call UIT strategies utilizing LEAPs rather than CEFs to eliminate the underlying “fund of fund” expenses thus benefiting investors. Up until that point, UIT sponsors offered UITs of CEFs to gain access to covered call strategies. By investing in LEAPs rather than CEFs, the underlying “fund of fund” expenses were eliminated thus benefiting investors.
