LA GALAXY DESIGNATED PLAYERS
The Designated Player Rule, also known as the Beckham Rule, allows Major League Soccer franchises to sign up to three players that would be considered outside their salary cap (either by offering the player higher wages or by paying a transfer fee for the player), enabling teams to compete for star players in the international soccer market.
The rule is informally named after David Beckham because of the LA Galaxy's ground-breaking signing of Beckham in 2007. Since then, the LA Galaxy have signed 12 other designated players and brought some of the biggest names in international soccer to MLS.
