Gay pride or LGBTQ+ pride is the promotion of the self-affirmation, dignity, equality, and increased visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people as a social group. Pride, as opposed to shame and social stigma, is the predominant outlook that bolsters most LGBTQ+ rights movements.
WHAT IS PRIDE?
WHY JUNE?
The month of June was chosen for LGBTQ+ Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred at the end of June 1969. As a result, many pride events are held during this month to recognize the impact LGBTQ+ people have had in the world. Bisexual activist Brenda Howard is known as the "Mother of Pride", for her work in coordinating the first LGBT Pride march, and she also originated the idea for a week-long series of events around Pride Day which became the genesis of the annual LGBTQ+ Pride celebrations that are now held around the world every June.
PROGRESS TOWARDS EQUALITY
While some positive changes over the past 10 years show remarkable progress toward LGBTQ equality, they also importantly show the significant work remaining—whether in criminal justice, identity documents, and more— as well as the new or increasing challenges that have arisen in recent years, such as the growth of religious exemptions. Even in 2020, an LGBTQ person’s legal rights and protections can change dramatically across state lines. It is critical that advocates for LGBTQ equality continue to work for progress in cities and counties, in state legislatures, and in the halls of Congress.
More About Stonewall
The rainbow flag, with its eight colours (sexuality symbolized by hot pink, life by red, healing by orange, the Sun by yellow, nature by green, art by blue, harmony by indigo, and spirit by violet), was designed by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker and has been adopted worldwide. The following year a six-colour flag, which is in common use today, appeared with red, orange, yellow, green, blue (harmony replaced art as symbolized by blue in the flag), and violet, partially because of the unavailability of some of the fabric colours.
