TIP: Ask your doctor if they offer telehealth visits. If you have access to the Sydney Health app, you can start or schedule a virtual visit there 24/7.

TIP: Out of network = Higher out of pocket
When you go to a doctor outside your plan’s network, you’ll pay a higher share of the costs.
Use generic medicines
Generic medicines are just as effective as brand name drugs — at a fraction of the cost. Ask your doctor if they might work for you.
Try over-the-counter medications
Medicine you can buy without a prescription can help with many common ailments, such as allergies, pain, sinus problems, and sleep issues — and it’s almost always cheaper. Buying store brands will save you even more money.
Sign up for home delivery
Having a 90-day supply conveniently delivered right to your door saves you a trip to the pharmacy and could save you money as well. If you have pharmacy benefits with Empire,
go to anthembluecross.com to sign up.
Review your plan’s covered drug list
A drug list is a list of generic and brand-name medicines covered by your health plan. They are listed in groups called tiers. Tiers 1 and 2 include low-cost and generic medicines that will save you the most money.
To check the drug list on your Empire plan, go to the Pharmacy page on anthembluecross.com, or on the Sydney Health app, select Medication List.

Know your options for emergency care
If you need medical care quickly and it’s not a true emergency, try your doctor’s office, virtual care, a retail health clinic, or urgent care. It could save you hundreds of dollars. Think sprains, cuts, rashes, earaches, and other common illnesses and injuries.
Stay in your plan’s network
Doctors and other health professionals in your plan’s network have agreed to provide services to you at a discount, so you’ll pay less out of pocket. These care providers can include doctors, mental health professionals, dentists, optometrists, labs, hospitals, imaging centers, and pharmacies.
Remember: Doctors and hospitals not in your plan’s network can charge any amount they want and bill you for the difference between what your plan pays them and what they charge.
