The Small/Cool contest was invented in 2005 by Apartment Therapy’s founder and CEO Maxwell Ryan.
The goal: to find the smallest, coolest, real-life space in NYC (and later on, the world!). The popular contest ran for more than 10 years, before sunsetting in 2016.
Since then we’ve heard from our readers loud and clear: Bring Small/Cool back! So we did—you can vote on the contest entries right here. We’re also hosting a major (now virtual!) event, the Small/Cool Experience, so that you can have the small, cool home of your dreams, inspired by some of the best designers in the business. Explore the 2020 Small/Cool rooms above, and catch up on our live Instagram event here.

Forever an enthusiast for artful living, Black Lacquer Design founder Caitlin Murray’s eclectic personal style is a manifestation of modern sensibilities and an homage to distinctive design from decades past. Her candid sense of color has earned her a reputation for daring interiors that are equal parts whimsical irreverence and polished chic. She lives in Los Angeles in a 1920s era Spanish-style abode with her husband, eccentric vintage artwork and their cocker spaniel, Color.
Caitlin Murray
After playing bass guitar in a punk rock band signed to a major record label, New Hampshire native Max Humphrey determined a career change was in order. This dynamic duo (and their team!) have taken on every organizing challenge presented—from the most cluttered city in America (NYC) to some of the largest homes in Beverly Hills.
Jamie and Fillip Hord
