First major research building in the UK to achieve the passivhaus principles energy performance standards
Our Capabilities | World Class Facilities
Oxford University
The previous Tinbergen Building on the site had the lowest thermal/energy performance of any major building in the entire University estate. Once a decision was made to redevelop in lieu of refurbish, creating a building that could align with the University’s Net Zero Carbon ambition and be delivered as the first major project from their new Sustainability Strategy were key elements of the brief. In addition to Passivhaus principles, the Sustainability Strategy contained requirements from other environmental assessments such as BREEAM and WELL in addition to the Oxford Local Plan.
The largest capital project (by GIA) ever undertaken by the University, which will be the first major research building in the UK which has been designed to Passivhaus energy performance principles. It will significantly improve the psychological and biological science that is carried out in Oxford, helping scientists to solve some of our major global challenges. Situated in a conservation area and between Oxford’s listed University parks, science area and historic city centre, the building will transform engagement with the public and enable co-location to promote collaboration in emergent fields. The tri-faculty co-location marks a step change in the respective departments operating models, which led to redesign of the research and teaching programmes, significantly increasing efficiency through the use of shared resources, enabling them to maximise student numbers and associated revenue.
