Rewriting the NarrativE
Arkansas Children’s Launches National Center to Protect Future Generations from the Opioid Crisis
Leading a Legacy of Hope
In a little over two decades, nearly 727,000 people died from opioid overdose in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Opioid dependence has significant impacts on children and families, given opioids are a leading cause of poisoning deaths in children under age 5, as well as a leading cause of maternal mortality. Beyond these preventable deaths, opioid misuse costs nearly $500 billion every year in the U.S. related to health care, substance use treatment, criminal justice and more.
The numbers, while staggering, do not tell the whole story.
Each number represents a life, and a family impacted. Children are the innocent victims of the opioid crisis, whether in the womb, from accidental poisoning, the removal from their parents or home or living with the grief of losing a parent or caregiver to death or incarceration.
Arkansas Children’s experts understand the far-reaching effects of opioid use disorder on children and their families.
We are working with the communities to rewrite the narrative.
NCOR
Historic Center
The National Center for Opioid Research & Clinical Effectiveness (NCOR) will be a first-of-its-kind center not only in Arkansas but nationwide, dedicated to understanding the effects of the opioid crisis on the fetus, newborns, developing children and adolescents, as well as pregnant and parenting individuals. Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin awarded the $75-million center $55 million of opioid and vaping settlement funds, allowing for ambitious and groundbreaking research, and a dedicated NCOR building on the Arkansas Children’s Hospital campus in Little Rock.
“The opioid crisis has devastated Arkansas families, and we see the impact in our NICU, clinics and ER every day. By creating this center, we are accelerating a healthier future for the children of Arkansas. The brilliant capacity of the team already on the ground and those we will recruit will create a better today and healthier tomorrow for the unbelievable number of children who suffer in the opioid crisis’ wake.”
— Marcy Doderer, FACHE, Arkansas Children’s president and chief executive officer
