An Arrow Company
We believe technology can make life better for the many, not just the few, and that seasons of great change also offer moments when the benefits
of technology are felt like never before. Across 2020, Arrow managed solutions that helped communities and individuals be well, stay connected and keep moving forward.
Two especially meaningful projects saw industries band together around the early challenges of the pandemic and enabled a friend to come full circle on a journey that began 20 years ago.
UK Ventilator Challenge
In the spring, as the COVID-19 crisis escalated, a consortium of technology, industrial and engineering companies with operations in the United Kingdom, including Arrow and McLaren, shifted focus to relieve a shortage in hospital ventilators across the country.
Sam Returns to Racing
Twenty years after a crash on
the track left him paralyzed from the shoulders down, former IndyCar driver Sam Schmidt returned to competition as part
of the Optima Ultimate Street Car Challenge. Sam drove the third and newest edition of Arrow’s Semi-Autonomous Motorcar (SAM), a 2020 Chevy Corvette C8, at the regional event in Bowling Green, Ky., where the iconic sportscar is manufactured.
Pooling knowledge and resources that
spanned the medical, aerospace and automotive sectors, they helped scale up manufacturing
and distribution of the Penlon ESO 2 and
Smiths paraPAC plus devices.
Within three months, the equivalent of nearly
10 years of ventilator production had been delivered. In total, 13,437 new devices were made available for the national response as well as efforts overseas.
With our extensive reach and capabilities, and diverse relationships with McLaren and other consortium partners, Arrow served in a central role managing the global electronics supply chain for production of the Penlon ventilator.
Supply Chain and Engineering
Arrow engineers analyzed a product design that had been updated and simplified for coronavirus treatment, leveraged our deep supplier ecosystem, and also recommended alternative components to meet accelerated schedules and critical requirements.
Tapping our global network of warehouses and ports, Arrow’s asset management and transportation teams worked in tandem to secure and ship more than 30 million components, including processors, sensors and printed circuit boards, as well as scarce and high-demand parts.
They also helped with manufacturing and assembly arrangements as shipments arrived.
Transportation and Manufacturing
Across two days of competition, Sam bested more than a dozen able-bodied drivers, finishing 34 out of 42 overall.
Race results
All software and technology that Arrow adapted for the SAM Car is open to the developer and engineering communities to offer broader applications for independent living.
If you are able-bodied, technology makes life easier. But for people with disabilities, it can be life-changing, giving them a level of independence they haven’t seen before.”

Museum Display
The original Arrow SAM Car — a 2014 Corvette Stingray — is now on loan to the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, providing visitors a look at how technology can bring independence, break down barriers and make life more accessible.
Since debuting the SAM Car in
2014 in demonstration laps at the Indy 500, Sam Schmidt has driven the vehicle on road courses and to the top of Pikes Peak at the 2016 International Hill Climb. Having earned a unique quadriplegic driver’s license, he also has navigated the car on public streets in New York City, Boston, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
The race-against-the-clock format showcased four driving events and an engineering and design presentation. In addition to his net result, Sam placed 12th in a start/stop event that measured straight-line acceleration and braking. While many entries were outfitted with aftermarket performance modifications, the only upgrades to the SAM Car included technologies to enable driving without the use of hands and feet.
