Hell's Kitchen Lithium and Power project
The project brings investors, including General Motors and other automakers, together with startup Controlled Thermal Resources.
The goal is to extract lithium from the richest known deposit in North America, near a toxic lake in California, and produce battery-grade lithium on-site by 2024.
Much of the steam is directed to a turbine, which generates energy. The energy can be sold to local power companies.
The spent brine is returned to the earth.
Brine, heated to about 600 degrees Fahrenheit within geothermal deposits, is extracted from the earth. The brine is separated into steam and concentrated brine.
The remainder of the steam and the concentrated brine is sent to a minerals facility.
The concentrated brine is processed to create battery-ready lithium.
