All versions of the ID.5 come with a 77kWh battery pack. This means the car can travel significant distances on a single charge - up to 327 miles* in the Pro Performance versions of the car, and 314 miles in the GTX.
With the ID.5, you don’t have to sacrifice space for the sake of design flair. At 549 litres, the boot is a similar size to the ID.4’s, and with the rear seats folded, the load space increases to a considerable 1,561 litres. Despite the sloping roofline, there’s still plenty of headroom in the rear, even for taller adults.
Whether you want usefully brisk acceleration or hot hatch-like pace,
the ID.5 has you covered. The entry-level Pro model develops 171bhp, providing a 0-62mph time of 10.4 seconds, while the 201bhp Pro Performance does the same speed in 8.4sec. Finally, the dual-motor, 296bhp ID.5 GTX hits 62mph in just 6.3 seconds.
The ID.5 is full of cutting-edge technology, including an augmented-reality head-up display, a voice assistant that responds to the prompt 'Hello ID', Travel Assist which can keep you in lane and maintain a following distance, and over-the-air updates to make sure the ID.5's software remains fresh.
Once the battery needs replenishing, you won’t need to wait around for long. The ID.5 can accept a rapid charging rate of up to 135kW, meaning it’s possible to charge the pack to 80 per cent from near-empty in as little as 30 minutes, or for shorter stops, 62 miles in just six minutes.
The ID.5 is an athletic take on the electric SUV, with its sloping roofline and rear spoiler giving a sense of sporty elegance. Further enhancing the ID.5’s look is a black roof, along with various silver design elements.
Interior and exterior highlights
The ID.5’s ‘IQ.Light’ feature dozens of computer-controlled LEDs, more effectively lighting the road ahead without dazzling oncoming traffic. An elegant light strip extends between the LED matrix headlights and the Volkswagen logo.

This eye-catching, standard-fit feature provides a glazed area across almost the entire roof. It’s tinted to ensure pleasant temperatures inside the cabin, while a sunblind protects passengers from strong sunlight.

How to Charge your ID.5
Just above the driver’s side rear wheel you’ll find a flap, under which is what’s known as a ‘CCS’ or Combined Charging System socket. This clever port offers two connections in one - the upper AC section is compatible with the Type 2 cable you’ll find on a home wallbox and some public chargers, while DC rapid chargers use both upper and lower parts. This set-up gives drivers access to the two most common ports, opening up a wide range of charging options.
Socket
You can charge an ID.5 from a three-pin socket using the supplied adaptor cable, but it’s recommended to top up your EV using a wallbox. This is around three times faster, taking around 12 hours to replenish the battery using a typical 7.2kW unit. Plug in your ID.5 in the evening and it’ll be charged and ready to go the next morning.
Charging at home
With the capability of charging at up to 135kW, it’s possible to top up the ID.5’s battery at a very fast rate. When plugged into a powerful enough CCS rapid charger, as much as 62 miles can be added every six minutes, so you can bring the pack from nearly empty to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes. At a 50kW charger, the same takes around an hour.
Charging in public
Volkswagen’s We Charge smart service gives easy access to 340,000 chargers across Europe. The corresponding app - accessible both via the car’s infotainment screen and your smartphone - maps out available charge points, while We Charge plans give preferential rates at some stations.
