When to use it: A good option if your baby is healthy and doesn’t have any allergies or intolerances.
Things to keep in mind: Some babies may have a sensitivity to cow’s milk proteins.

Goat’s milk formula
Made from goat’s milk, this is often considered an alternative to cow’s milk formula. The milk is processed to make it easy for babies to digest.
When to use it: Some babies with mild sensitivities to cow’s milk might tolerate goat's milk better.
Things to keep in mind: Goat’s milk contains similar proteins to cow’s milk. If your baby has a milk protein allergy, goat’s milk isn’t a good option.
Soya formula
This is made from soya beans. It’s suitable for babies from 6 months, but should only be used under medical supervision. When to use it: Some parents choose soya formula for ethical or environmental reasons, as a plant-based alternative to dairy.Things to keep in mind:
Many babies who are sensitive to cow's milk are also sensitive to soya. Soya formula milks can also damage your baby's teeth over time.
Specialist formulas
These formulas are made to meet the nutritional needs of babies with specific conditions, such as cow's milk protein allergy, lactose intolerance, or reflux. Options include:
How to switch baby formula
#2 Boil and measure
Boil fresh tap water and let it cool for no more than 30 minutes. Carefully measure the right amount of water. Then, measure the formula powder and mix them together in the sterilised bottle.
#3 Check the temperature
Test the milk on your wrist to make sure it’s warm, not hot, before feeding your baby.

Expert tip
Formula prep isn’t rocket science, but it does have rules - 70°C water, level scoops, and no freestyle measuring.
Expert tip
A warm bottle is comforting, but make sure it's safe. Always check the temperature before feeding and never use a microwave to heat formula - hot spots can burn tiny mouths!
More formula options
Lactose-free formula: Perfect for babies with lactose intolerance, this formula can be used from birth if your health visitor or doctor recommends it.
Anti-reflux formula: If your baby struggles with reflux, this thicker formula can help reduce spit-ups.
Partially-hydrolysed formula: Also known as comfort formula, this is designed to ease the symptoms of colic and constipation in babies. Contains cow's milk proteins that have been partly broken down.
Hypoallergenic formula: This is suitable for babies who are allergic to cow’s milk. It's based on cow's milk and has the same nutrients as standard formula milk, but the protein in the milk has been fully broken down, so your baby is less likely to react to it.
