A Disorderly Transition
Making the Math Work
The past year has crystallized the challenges of the energy transition. Even as the scale and severity of climate-related disasters remained near all-time highs, markets across the world doubled down on energy security. Scarcity-driven price shocks drove inflation, affecting businesses and consumers globally. Investors continued to scrutinize fossil fuel investments, even as some governments called for more output from these traditional sources of energy.
Some energy companies benefited from short-term demand spikes, but all have their eye on the future and the once-in-a-generation opportunities of the energy transition. Their investments in new energy models continue to grow. Although most companies we surveyed are cautious about how rapidly the energy system can transition and clear eyed about the challenges, they remain confident in the energy and natural resource sector’s ability to be the driving force behind the shift. Indeed, they have the skills, knowledge, people, and resources to change the world.
